Working on a Trane Chiller RTAA that was tripping at startup. The AC screw compressor slide valve stuck not allowing chiller to unload. Great entry service call for any hvac technician looking to start on chiller air conditioning.

I have seen them come out of the factory with the loader wiring reversed - It starts on full load. I used to check that every compressor unload solenoid was correctly energised on start up

Thanks a lot guys! I have been monitoring trane chillers for couple of months and as an entry level tech i do ask some guys with much more experience and no answers, one even told me got to learn by your self like i did. Any way thanks and keep it up.👍

If you pump down the compressor and remove the flare fitting on the end of the slide valve you can put a 5/16 nut driver into the hole and tap on it to free up the slide valve. I went on a job behind another tech to replace the solenoid kit. In the cabinet was another new kit that someone had bought previously. I got suspicious and downloaded the service manual and followed the procedure mentioned above and it worked for years without any issues. Quick fix that several other companies couldn’t do. Customer care and support!

She already has a leaking lip seal (indicated by the aluminum block in between the solenoids and Comp housing) . As stated in the previous comment the sb for troubling shooting is helpful, but an old timer showed me a trick with hooking up a manifold set hp to discharge, planning to suct, and middle port to the Schreiner port on the slide valve cover. You can crack or burp manifold value open momentarily to load or unload disc to load, suct to unload. If you leave suction open and comp does not unload you know that slide valve is issue. If it loads and unloads fine you know to start looking at solenoids or triacs.

I remember once we removed the unloaded plate. Cut a beer can to slip under the plate so it couldn’t load up , until we received the parts.

Recently replaced the unloader piston on one of those machines. Seals were so worn down that oil was blowing by and would only operate at 100% open and it appeared that it was just stuck

There is a procedure to switch loaders on and off to troubleshoot to see whether the problem lies in the compressor or the controller.

There's a male unloader pair (these) and a female unloader (single, on the back), right? So during start-up the female valve is unloaded... but you're saying that after the first start-up in the morning the female valve closes and the *male* unloaders are set too high? And can't move? So if the female unloader couldn't unload it wouldn't even be able to start, but now it can start but runs too hard. Our 120ton is having unloader problems right now, those pistons get sticky! Looks like they want to change the compressor... makes bad noises, like marbles inside.

Why is it necessary to hold a magnet on the LED to bind the sensors of the trare chiller?
Why and how does the LED light up when you hold the magnet?

I have a trane rtwa chiller compressor B tripping on latched fault : compressor overload . This system did have a leak and we fixed the leaks and recharged to factory LBs but when it gets called on right away it’s tripping and my alarm light comes on for latched fault diagnostics is compressor overload do you think this is my problem ?

What about liquid pressure. Is the condenser fan makes noises when unload not in operation.

@@HVACTIME sir . When unload not working properly. It's creating high liquid pressure in condenser and thus condenser fan makes noise also . And expansion valve close partially because of unload commands. I dont know how to explain. Poor English😒. Anyway. Expansion valve, loading unloading valve and condenser all works in proportional and in triangle 🔺️. And thanks for sharing your valuable information. God bless you

I understand now, yes they all work together but it shouldn't make the fans noisy.

    • @GaneshKamble-gd9cg

Sir, In this case I think the discharge pressure will not rise higher because the expansion valve must be closed and there will less refrigerant entering inside the compressor. If less refrigerant is entering inside compressor then the discharge pressure will also be less. Only the compressor will keep running in this case because of stuck unloading valve. Also I doubt why it is not getting trip under low pressure after reaching the setpoint. Because expansion valve is closed and it will not allow the refrigerant inside compressor and compressor keeps pumping due to failed unloader. Also why the compressor does not cutoff automatically if the unloader is failed but the demand is met. Correct me if I am wrong Sir please. Thank you.
