Hi Jordy. I don’t know who you were before your accident but I love who you are today. I think you’re amazing! And how you pulled yourself out of a dark place is so admirable, you are so strong!
I love all your wood spirits, each one has so much personality and are so different, just like people are. They may all look the same to some people but not to me.
You are such a sweetie. I’d date you if I lived closer to you and I would support everything you are doing what it is you love. And let you be you.’
I often play your videos for hours just to hear you talk. The swear words add a little spice to your videos and they make me laugh out loud. So don’t stop swearing please. I haven’t tried wood carving yet, I’m in a drawing people phase and I make up my own people out of my head. I never use a reference photo.your carving is a bit the same. We both create creatures that didn’t exist before just out of our heads.
I’m truly sorry that you had such a bad brain injury but there is a bright side to it, it made you who you are today. I’m also so sorry that your mom passed away. Life is never the same when you lose your mother.’]
Your videos are helping me in many ways and are helping so many other people , some who also have a battle to fight.
Keep carving and swearing please. I will keep watching. I will buy your book also.
Just remember, you’re the best and all your faithful subscribers love you exactly the way you are, or they wouldn’t be here.
You are one of a kind! ❀

I found you on CZcams and then decided I would try to carve a wood spirit. I am a 68 year old widow. I inherited a dremel from my husband. I have a small amount of talent for art so with your instructions I have started trying. I made one yesterday and am so proud. I will make more. I am so inspired by you. I loved you before I heard this story, I love you more now. Your friend Mickie

My dad is from Belfast, moved to Mayo in Eire and built a house on a bog up a mountain at the age of 60 and Mum 58yrs, he said "it's your life and don't let anyone tell you how to live it" " Always help if you can, don't start a fight but walk away, being the stronger man."."Never give in,.except help ,if genuinely given" "and live with love and understanding in your life:" thankyou for sharing your life with us ,the unworthy, the needy and the wanting. Soo much of what you say makes perfect sense to me. On Aug 27th of 2015 I was riding my motorcycle to work and had 15:08 a double brain aneurysm and a severe stroke. I had many brain surgeries and spent a long time in the ICU. Prior to this I was a huge multi tasker, now if I make bacon and eggs, I’m gonna burn one of them! I had to learn EVERYTHING again at 53, eating, walking and so on. I tried lots of new “hobbies” but carving WORKS. My brain isn’t working like I want it too, yet I look normal. I get tung tied easily, and now walk like I’m drunk. I no longer have a filter, and say what I am thinking. I love building and creating things and always have. I’m just a hot confusing mess, but it’s who I am now and I can’t change it. So either except it or go away. Your call, and I don’t care!!

Thanks for sharing. Im a remote worker so I can live anywhere so I moved across country to live on the beach. No family or friends within 2000 miles. No big deal I can make new friends but who knew there was going to be a pandemic. Being stuck in the house working all day and no local friends to visit at night I started to get some anxiety. This continued through the entire pandemic and anxiety continued to get worse which resulted in ADD.I couldn’t focus on shit for more than a few minutes. I discovered your carving videos about a year ago and found they relaxed me. I have a dremel and some shitty diamond burrs but never attempted to carve anything until recently. Pandemic is over but my mind still isn’t right. I was walking through the woods in mammoth California under these enormous pines with deadfall everywhere. I brought home a few pieces in hopes of carving some wood spirits. Several months later I finally sat down an decided to carve something. I carved a simple tiki and noticed while carving I was focused and my mind was at peace. I then carved my first wood spirit
he ain’t perfect but it brought me peace and allowed me to focus. I just purchased some decent burrs. I can’t wait to carve my next face. Thanks for sharing your videos, without your positive attitude, I would probably still be sitting in my own mind
letting that processor endlessly spin.

Thank you sir. I have ptsd from the trade center. Retired fdny ems. I just had knee replacement surgery. That got me into carving. It helps so much with a wondering mind and restless hands. It keeps the demons away. So no pity party here, just a thank you. God dropped you on the head for a reason. From what you said you were like as a kid and young adult, it sounded like you needed it.. im sorry if that sounded wrong, but there is a reason for everything. i was the same. One love brother.

I can totally relate. I was in a major car accident where I broke my back and was in traction for 4.5 months. So I started puttering around. I am also a Veteran with Wartime PTSD, and had a major drinking problem. I had a choice, quit drinking and lose everything I love, or stay on that road. Working with wood helped me find that peaceful place in my head, and I am 8 yrs sober now.

Thanks for sharing Jordy, quite a story. I have a friend whose son was in a bad car crash, an off duty cop ran into him. He was about 6 years old. He had a head injury similar to yours plus other bad injuries. He spent a year in the hospital with numerous surgeries. He’s in his twenties and doing well. His way of coping with it is working on cars.
Your videos got me excited about carving again, specially the quote “Carve deeper” it has brought my carving. On a side your cussing don’t bother me by the way. I was up in Canada and I would have met you and Ryan Cook. Take care my friend and have great day

Holy shit, Jordy! This video and your story were amazing. I watched it last night and I am still thinking about it. I am one of your new subscribers and new to the carving game, so I had not known the story. I will try to keep this brief, for I sense you get a buttload of emails and comments to your videos, and you seem to read them! I will respect your time. I am not religious, but the world should thank some power (pure luck?) that you did not die from the roof accident. You are an important influence in many regards. For kids who do not like school or who get in trouble. For old men ready to retire from teaching! Your message about art is soooooo true. Everyone needs it in their lives. It just makes you feel complete and happy and all the other shit takes a back seat when you are staring at a misshapen owl with an MS 170 rumbling in your hands deciding where to make the next cut. Anyway, keep talking during your videos. And let me tell you that you may not have college degrees, but you, Sir, are an excellent teacher. Just the way you discussed plunge cuts changed a lot for me. I was being an idiot and letting the top of the tip hit the wood...Shit! I am rambling. Jordy, you are the balls! Go Oilers!!!!!!!!!! Jordy the first I seen your carving videos I made a human connection with you and now I understand why. Something about your humility, dignity, pride, decency and integrity spoke to me and somehow rung a bell in my heart. Our lives turned out to be something similar and our approach to hardship and difficulties in life are somewhat similar. There are so many similarities it’s unreal. I’m from East Belfast in N. Ireland. I was trouble all my life even though I’d really no need to be and always stood apart from the crowd and could never truly fit in. I’ve always been a bit of a loner. Love music , art.nature and can do anything I put my mind and hands to. I now suffer from Parkinson’s disease and a bunch of mental health issues that go along with it. I play all sorts of musical instruments and I’ve recently started watching you and boy what a lift you have given me. Thanks Jordy for reaching out from across the world. You’ll probably never know how motivational you are. I have a couple of videos on CZcams playing harmonica and guitar if you wanna see my ugly face. Best wishes to you and yours Good to talk to ya.videos are under Edward Morton.

I really liked it and thought, wow this must be a cool and funny guy with a lot of love for what he does. And this video here shows me that I was right. And wow. The story behind! I am glad to hear that you have survived such a hard injury and that you started a new life and found out what it is all about for you and which things count for you and which things can be left behind! I am going through a similar process, after depression caused by tough childhood and being hypersensitive (if that's the word for it in english, not sure...). Thank you for your words. Thanks Jordy, this is the first time I have commented on a CZcams channel. You really inspire me. I’m a disabled retired firefighter, I have two total knee replacements and recently had three bones removed from the base of my left hand. After a life time of kickin ass and takin names I felt sorta lost unable to do the things I used too my days were kinda spent aimlessly wondering what to do. I drank too much and spent a lot of time just floating around. I had always searched for a creative outlet but nothing seemed to fit, until I found woodcarving. I’m just getting started and still developing my style but I can already tell this is for me. I also live in a place with lots of free wood available, and I’m having fun learning what carves well and what doesn’t. The Wood spirits seem to be my thing too it’s what I like to do. Well this is getting sorta long thanks again for sharing your journey, you’ve been a big help to this broken down old hose jockey. Keep up the good work. Slainte! Jay

    Jordy,
I just found your videos while searching woodworking ideas and you caught my attention. I’m really grateful you took the time to do this one in particular as myself and so many others are able to relate. Art is a form of meditation. It’s puts you in your flow regardless of what type. I found mine long ago and want to expand into carving.
I love your art and your spirit. I feel informed and entertained in each video and want to just say thanks for sharing with us all! Love and peace to you!

I want to start carving wood spirits. Never been very artistic inclined but thanks to you & a couple or 3 others I think I can do it. Got to clean out a spot in my barn & find my dremel & chisels. I fell of ladder week & half ago about 8 foot. Broke rib two fingers, hurt wrist, soft spot on head & hurt both legs. I consider myself lucky. Keep the videos coming, I'm kinda slow

So I got a dremel and looked up some ideas of what to do with it and found your videos. You give off such a brightness with your positivity and you make creating so much fun! Jordy, an amazing video. Thank you for sharing your sincerity. I've had four heart attacks and cancer, and I also used art to get me through those rough times. I do woodturning and acrylic pour painting. I came to your site because I want to learn how to carve faces - I have enough equipment, but had no idea how to carve a 3 dimensional face. You put me on the right track. I'd love to sit in a bar, share a few drinks with you and hear more of your stories. You are a genuine, honest, caring person - I'm glad you found your peaceful place. Now it may take a year to make one of my tree miniatures but I can't stop till I get enough detail I can stop... What I need to learn is preserving the wood to not shrink and crack as my carving takes so long.

Some of us it takes getting some sense knocked into us. I quit drinking in 1978. I was 24 years old.
I remember as a child my Aunt telling me, Your problem is you can't relax. This was before childhood disorders were well recognized. They didn't use Ritalin back then, they used a leather belt like a whip.
I used alcohol as a copping mechanism I think, from a very early age. Then when I made poor decisions under the influence, I really needed a copping mechanism. You know how that goes. Like trying to pet a dog that has bitten us many times already. The substance helps to cause a problem and then as our solution we use more of the substance.
I am 66 now and had a pretty good life. I thought I would give carving a go. I bought all sorts of knives and gouges and have chopped off many a nose, (in wood) I found your videos and have ordered a power carving kit with tools you recommended.Being an emotional person isn't a bad trait. It is just something that needs to be kept on a leash and directed. My emotions change only when my thoughts do. My thoughts create the emotions, not the other way around.

Had the tools that I would use to clean up some of my wood turnings on my lathe. My balance is not real good at times so I was looking for something to do while sitting and you got me started. This is my third wood spirit. Thanks, pal. Not too smart, can't figure out how to attach a pic. Will try to study up and send later. Keep the faith my friend and keep producing your videos.

The human element of the creative process often is covered over, the end result is all most people see. The deeper behind the scene is where the art comes from. It takes a distorted mind in some way to do the process of making art. When I used to be a house painter for my income, people would say, “how can you do that all day?”, i explained that I had to smoke pot for 15 years to train my brain for the repetitive hours, to slow my thinking down enough to where my focus could paint, all artwork is an altered state of reality.
I have had my events and injuries, being knocked down in life is for many part of life’s journey, it is those who rise back up as you’re self that are the gold in life. To have a point in life where you say, “ if I’m going to live, I’m not going to waste my days doing bullshit”. That point is a gift and not everyone will see behind the curtain.
