The opening of this strikes me as quite impressive. I can't often hang with the duration of his works...too abstract. But this one so far has undeniable beauty and at least at the beginning some tonal framework and a feeling of direction. I'll have to return to hear the whole of it later and see if I feel the same about the entire thing. He must have been feeling sentimental to actually write a melody with a harmonic progression. This is his warm and fuzzy side.
Hard to take, but fascinating. I sometimes wonder if Maxwell Davies was trying to pull our collective leg to try to convince us that he was saying something original and profound. I have to convince myself here that I don't have musical dyslexia; I'm sure it'll all become clear to me sometime, because I always enjoy hearing his works. His orchestration, as always, is impressive, as is his emotional build-up to 12:12 here.
