An active volcano of a symphony. Teeming with ideas and cumulative power.

The language is very different, but in his grandeur, this music remembers me Mahler

Music this atonal and severe can be bewilderingly abstruse to me, and indeed I tried to listen to this symphony a few months ago and found it too forbidding. Now, after hearing Maxwell Davies' more approachable 5th and 9th Symphonies with no ill effects and some enjoyment, I finished this 7th with more appreciation (but still meager enjoyment). The finale is quite effectively dramatic, however.

I think you can apply what someone said about Bruckner to Maxwell Davies - "he wrote the same symphony nine times" - although none the worse for that.

Except it wasn't true of Bruckner at all. There is immense variety of material and structure in his symphonies...quite innovative in fact.

Imagine what more worthwhile things the composer could have done with his time than working on this. Like peeling potatoes, for instance.

Didn't you know this symphony was subtitled 'Dodecaphonic Potato Peels'?

Who are you to talk about doing anything worthwhile with your time? You apparently have nothing better to do with your time than torture yourself by listening to music you detest. Are you a masochist?
