  • Any worker who’s had to access an elevator pit in the course of their day knows that being on a pit ladder can pose a significant safety risk. Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund National Coordinator Scott Russ Russell, an IUEC - International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 32 member from Atlanta, Georgia, asked himself - how can we prevent injuries and fatalities on the pit ladder in the future?
Working with a team of industry leaders and experts, Scott designed a Safety Pit Ladder that will automatically cut power to the elevator if any weight on it is detected. Once a prototype was patented, the rights to develop the technology were transferred to the team at the Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund to ensure it could be moved to production as quickly and easily as possible.
He then worked with ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) code committees to write requirements for using sensor-equipped pit ladders in new elevator installations into the latest version of the code.
