Great upload on how to travel with boards, often people show the highlights of travel, good idea to cover the reality of travel and not just highlights
Thank you!! Yes, something i want to highlight on this channel for sure :))
One thing to note is taking spares, even in cheaper countries leashes and fins seem to be crazy money while at home you can hunt for deals. I buy a board in country but take a leash and set of cheapo fsc 1 fins to get me buy when needed. Also you pack your surf board exactly how i pack my snowboard jeans to protect edges are the key.
Hey Joe!! Yep, great shout!! I think surf stuff in cheaper countries is always the same price or more expensive due to shipping, so yep as you said, always bring spares from home!! Haha Epic!
100% surf shit that needs to be imported is always insanely expensive, I’m in Mexico and I can’t even find a pair of shorts to surf in for less than $100
Cheers for this, mate
No worries :))
Thanks for the info
No worries :))
I have an 8 ft Pro-Lite world traveler board bag/coffin. I ride 7-8 ft boards. It’s a nightmare traveling with it, even though it’s a great bag and has wheels. I only take it if I think there won’t be easy board rental. It’s simply too expensive to travel with and your equipment only ends being worth more monetary investment which is not good.
Yeah I mean, you can pick up an okay(ish) 7-8ft board in most places, so yeah for you, I guess it would be silly to spend hundreds transporting a similar board to the other side of the world haha!
Thanks for this. I ride the same size and just got back from a Costa Rica trip where I rented. It was hard to find a board I liked, but also seems like such a hassle to bring one that size.
Oh awesome video Dan.
What happens if your board is broken?
What steps can you take?
Thanks, Stuart!! Yeah, there isn't much you can do, I don't think the airlines ever really pay out as they say you take them at your own risk, etc... I'd probably go down the travel insurance route and make sure you've got a certain amount of equipment covered on that!!
Here's a tip those O&E gray day cover i saw you have has a small loop on the nose, if you go to non touristy areas but need a bike can tie a small piece of string from the bike frame thru the loop and back to your bike and use the strap to carry a board on your shoulder very light and easy i've done this for a few hours rides for months at a time over many years now.
Epic!! Great shout! Good for Indo if you end up with a scooter and no racks or you're on a bicycle haha!!
Also check for board embargo’s, Latin America sometimes has this.
Yes good idea!!
I was just in Nosara, Costa Rica. I felt the board selection was quite limited and disappointing. And the fins were all crap, and with almost no selection to buy a new set.
Is it common to buy a decent used board in a popular surf town, use it for a month or more, then resell it for about the same price to the shop where you purchased it instead of renting a board by the hour/day on the beach?
Hey mate! Yeah, I'm not sure about that one! I definitely wouldn't rely on being able to sell it back, especially not for the same price!!
I threw a couple of my old full suits in my bag once and traded them for like a month board rental in huanchaco peru. That was one of the best moves I made because they were trash suits to me. Hey I booked on asia air and it says online Thailand to Bali get free boards but now people are telling me there’s a fee. Plus I booked thru an agent named kiwi via kayak. Idk I feel like I’m gonna get stung bad now. Idk if you have any advice but this whole board thing feels like a scam. They have documents online saying free boards.
imagine flying 13 hours to a place and your boards dont show
Do you take the wax off your boards before every flight? If not. ever have any issues with it melting?
I haven't yet, flying from aus to indo and vice versa. Not sure about everyone else
Hey Steve! I try to, but don't always have time. It's good to though if you can, so you can put a fresh coat on, with the best temperature wax, depending on where you're going!!
Any insight on Sri Lankan airlines allowances/fees since you’ve been to Sri Lanka recently? Thanks
I flew Sri Lanka Air, 1 Hour from INDIA to Colombo (business class) in 2016, was charged $260 for 2 boards in 1 board bag. Hopefully it’s different now.
Hey mate!! Best to check directly on their site as I think with SL it depends on the origin/destination. Boards were FREE when I flew London - Colombo!
Can you do a daily vlog of your life for a week
Hey mate!! I have so many videos to film and edit for now, but definitely something I want to do next year (some more vlog-style behind-the-scenes stuff ) so stay tuned :))
What about at the other end? If you are hiring a car, or have a hotel transfer? Those vehicles are unlikely to have roof racks/straps - what do you usually do?
If your board is shorter then it will mostly likely fit inside all but the smallest of cars. My longest board is a 6'3 and I just recline the passenger seat and it fits in no problem.
If you've got a mid length, shame on you. ;)
If you've got a long board you could just buy those soft roof racks. I don't think they take up too much space do they? Pack them in the board bag? I don't use them so I'm not sure how heavy they are but they look light.
@@doublestrokeroll haha - only been surfing a short while. Just got a 7’4 - my first hard board 🥴
@@SimonBeee lol...that's OK then. That's actually a great size to learn on.
That should fit in any decent mid size rental car. Just depends how much extra space you need.
@@doublestrokeroll soft roof racks are a good shout!
Hey mate! Good question! If the car is large, you can fit them inside the vehicle, or in a lot of countries, you can just tie them straight onto the roof. You don't need racks, just a set of Roof ties, as long as the driver is happy to do this!!
Do National Express bus & UK trains take Surfboards?
The UK trains don’t which means driving and paying for airport parking which is a major inconvenience. It’s hard to justify the expense (for me).
@@Richard-fw9xu Thanks man that sucks. I'm going on a month trip so leaving car in airport car park isnt great.
Hey mate!! I always travel with National Express and never had any problems stashing them underneath. I think technically you have to pay, but I never do!!
@@DanHarmon123 Thanks for letting me know mate
ありがとうございます!
What about longboards hehe
Hey Alex! I've never flown with a longboard but you'll just have to check with the airline for the specific maximum length and size!! I'm sure it's ok with most "good" airlines though!!
If you don’t wrap the rails with pool noodles and layer pool noodles on the top and bottom your boards are doomed, and even then
Yeah good idea, although I never use them hahah!
Getting to an epic spot and trying to make a chunky fat shortboard work is infuriating
Dude, do you still have time to surf with all those videos you are editing?? Just be careful !
Hahah!! Yeah, been doing heaps of editing, but I always find thee time for surfing ;)
