Jason Kidd's beef with Jim Jackson involved Jamal Mashburn and a big Toni Braxton myth

- Jason Kidd, Jamal Mashburn, and Jim Jackson could have formed the offensive trio that launched the Dallas Mavericks to new heights in the early 90s. Instead, mismanagement by coaching, internal strife, and one incredibly persistent but untrue rumor about Toni Braxton left Dallas in the position of trading all three of these young stars.

The bigger story is how Phoenix keeps pimping Dallas out of there point guards 😂😂
TO THIS DAY!
+Devin Williams> Didn't Dallas strike first? They started getting good again in those days when the Mavs took Michael Finley from the Suns and a year or two later Steve Nash also from the Suns. Thus their core guards then came from the Suns. They pimped the Suns out their coach too----- Nelly Jr. who eventually became GM who years later would take Dirk and more recently Luka. Shawn Marion (no PG of course) helped the Mavs win a championship. He didn't go directly to the Mavs, but was out of Phoenix for only a year I believe before he went to Dallas. If Dallas hadn't pimped the Suns first these players and coach including Dirk and currently Luka may have never seen a Mav uniform.
@Elite Soulfly ok einstein
Coulda woulda shoulda
Yea but Phoenix cant win so it dont matter 😂😂
"In 1994 the Dallas Mavericks assembled one of the NBA's most exciting young cores. By 1997, all of them were gone." Fast forward to OKC... sounds pretty familiar.
FACTS
hope it doesn’t happen to this okc team
Imagine them just reading Jackson and keeping Mashburn and Kidd while drafting Dirk too? That would’ve been a team to reckon with!
I highly doubt had they kept Kidd and Mashburn together, that they are bad enough by 1998 to get the 9th overall pick required to get Dirk.
@@nathaniellevesque2782 THat 9th is from a trade of Milwaukee. But yea, they need to be bad to trade their pick that year to get Dirk
A smart GM woulda just traded Jim Jackson. Everyone could tell he was the problem.
What's the problem with Jim Jackson? Is it because he sleeps with teammates' wives and ex-wives and bones them so much they get mad over him?
Filipo Sooa Alright Jimmy boi relax stop making burners.
Facts.
90s Mavs. Think modern Knicks but irrelevant
@Robert Manders so is your dad
I just discovered these mini-docs and I'm hooked. So well edited and hooked me from the beginning.
Same here lol
SB Nation Making Sports History Great Again 👍🏿
Same. I don't know who this host is, but he's really good, and the way SN cuts him into the segments is also quality editing.
It is sooooo good
Ikr. The do a good bit of resarch.
Damn.......Jason Kidd-JJ-Mashburn in Dallas........Penny vs Shaq in Orlando.......and LJ vs Mourning in Charlotte......Point: The 1990's were filled with petty beefs that derailed franchises!!!
Facts 💯
So.. Shaq v Penny beef history in near future?
Shaq and Penny had beef? Tf
Shaq and Penny never had beef. There's a 30 for 30 on why the Magic didn't work.
@@heartbreak25 It was "Cold War beef"....aka...you knew US-Soviets hated each other...and gave each other low blows (read Shaqs book for 2011)....but kept it peaceful...Shaq-Kobe was WWII...full blown war..
please NEVER stop making these until you run out of beefs to talk about and then switch to a different league. It's the main reason I'm subscribed to this channel.
Jim Jackson must have been annoying as hell to be traded that many times. You either have a talent that is good for trade bait, or you can't get along with people to move that many times. Seems like the latter for Mr. Jackson.
Jason Griffith Well...Jim Jackson got injured alot. It was hard for him to stay healthy as well
Jason Griffith true I always wondered why Jim Jackson always got traded when he had some talent. Your character means a lot in the NBA.
He had a reputation for being a "locker room lawyer" which isn't a positive term in the NBA. Always had an issue with something or someone. Sad cuz he had a lot of talent.
@@Israel-nb7ip damn
Jimmy butler. Another J
Jim Jackson don't look like he aged since 90s
@Earff Almighty : Is it because Jim Jackson still looks like he has the same hairline since his NBA playing days or are you referring to his personality and general lack of professionalism?
These vids are so well put together and easy to understand the story. Keep up the good work guys 💪💯
Black Asian guys?
asians can't be black?
But is it Jon Bois?
Damn.......Jason Kidd-JJ-Mashburn in Dallas........Penny vs Shaq in Orlando.......and LJ vs Mourning in Charlotte......Point: The 1990's were filled with petty beefs that derailed franchises!!!
I remember when Jason Kidd was a rookie I started collecting basketball cards. I used to get excited when I would open a pack and get a Grant Hill rookie, Glen Robinson, or a Jason Kidd rookie. Loved that year in bball. Also loved watching the three Js in Dallas, but I had no idea at the time that players were beefing.
I started the year Larry Johnson was a rookie. Pretty weak class. But 1992, 93, and 94 had amazing rookie classes. 1995 was good too. By 1996, a class people knew was loaded but nobody saw THAT coming, I was getting out of the hobby for the most part. Twelve years later I was playing catch up. Man, that year Kidd and Grant were rookies was awesome all around.
In ten years Karl Anthony Towns, andrew wiggins and Jimmy Butler! Haha
Rip them 😂
Wrapping gifts and watching beef history. I’ve seen most of them, but I could watch these over and over.
At 8:10 “already had multiple beeves” I respect the pluralization of beef my dude
" 1 thing is true Toni Braxton is 🔥"😂😂
My favourite series on youtube the last 2 months
Jamal mashburn,seriously underated
Dudes kind of a forgotten name now adays.
He was really good for a long time.
Those Mavs jerseys 🔥
Love your videos they are well put together, I had to share this. I always wondered what happened to them when I was in high school.
Great job keep showing the Mavs love!!!
"I got girls that make that chick Toni Braxton look like Whoopi."
Either Show Proof Or It's Bullshit!

That should be a before and after on Wheel of Fortune
I know. I’m a nerd.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu- that's meta
😂😂
Well. Played.
There's one other factor you guys forgot. The mid-90s Mavs didn't have a veteran presence or two in the locker that could help reel in the Three Js and keep the house in order. You got three young guns with growing egos, nothing to held them in check in the midst of mediocre coaching and bad management while they had to contend with each other.
How else did you all think things were gonna end? :P
I Love these type of videos
Me too
great series keep them coming
This is a phenomenal video on an even better topic. This is extremely well done. Keep it up. Good luck with your continues growth
Make more vids of beef history, great series.
I was waiting for this one. You can't say "NBA beef" without "Jason Kidd and Jim Jackson"
Subbed now. This had me hooked from the start, great insight and editing!
Great story teller! Short, concise, and very good info. Subscribed.........have you thought about doing a channel on past music bands or solo musicians ?
Nothing but love for beef history!
Interesting that the Mavs over the 4 year span ('91-'94) it took to acquire Jackson, Mashburn and Kidd, lost one more game than the "Process" era Sixers in the 4 years ('14-'17) it took to assemble their current team. Both are 1 and 2 for largest loss total over a 4 year period in NBA history. 254 and 253 losses.
Hope you guys start doing beefs in baseball, hockey, and football next. Keep up the great work!
One thing I've learned from this video is don Nelson is under appreciated in basketball
Well yeah...most wins by a coach..part of numerous good title teams as a player and teams in different decades winning games playoff series as a coach..nelson was awful late in his career but what can you do he got denial by 2008...
Do more like these please
Still watching 💪💪💪 March 4, 2022
Jason Kidd 🔥🔥🔥
I can’t stop watching your videos 😫
Literally love these videos
These videos are amazing, please make many more!!
More of these please !!
I LOVE THIS SERIES KEEP IT UP
Loving these docs. Im hooked up
Love this series I subbed cause of these
I love these vids pls don’t stop
Yes keep making these videos. All that 1990s NBA stuff is awesome
Finally someone doing real journalism on the NBA about the best era of the League!
Always wanted to know about this, because the failure of Triple J ranch lead to the Mark Cuban/ Nowitzki era
Funny this trio was one of my teams in NBA JAM, they had lots of potential
Gave y’all a sub, gonna watch the rest of series, looking forward to the next one
Being a mavs fans was tough at times but I will always have 2011 to think back on
I don't know how much info you could fine, but a Beef History on Jermaine O'Neal and Ron Artest would be fascinating. Those dudes HATED each other when they were on the Pacers.
David Dearing I did hear about this rumor but weren’t so sure if it were true.
The way Jermaine stood up for Artest during the malice at the palace incident, I would've never guessed. Jermaine was hitting all those Pistons fans with brutal fatalities. But then again, both those teams were just full of thug ass players, so he might've just done it for the hell of it.
@@ziewknihtewza yeah he was a foot slip away from spinning a fat little white dude's head around like a bugs bunny cartoon XD
Lol i guess what happened with detroit patch up their salty relationship.
pretty much everybody hated Ron Artest.
Keep the beef vids coming
Love these videos😍
Excellent story I remember the 3 J's not getting along in the mid 1990's but I always thought if they got along good they could be a good team and unfortunately it didn't plan out that way but still one of the best young NBA teams ever that just my opinion.
I had the please of living in a suberb or Dallas and saw almost every one of these “bad” Mavericks games. They were still kinda fun to watch with good 3 point shooting.
Incredible work guys keep it up!!
Bro, I really love these bball beefs, please do a lot more
SB Nation You are the Goat.... Love your videos!
It's really a shame, as a native to Dallas/ Fort Worth, & being born in the early 80s. I can remember my Dad being excited about the Mavericks after they drafted Kidd. It's really a shame it didn't work out. If the Mavericks had the right coach in place. They really could have been something special. I was either 9 or 10 at the time. But there just certain things that just stick with you. Those memories of those Mavs teams will always stick with me. Great video btw. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.
this is an excellent channel ... well done !!!!
You ought to do a Beef History about the beef between Kansas basketball coach Roy Williams and Kansas athletic director Al Bohl from 2001-2003, which led to Bohl's firing and Williams leaving for North Carolina.
Love your channel man
These videos are legit amazing
I'm not going to lie I came back to rewatch this video after hearing jimmy Jackson talk about when he was playing and all of the different General managers dallas had and then brought up Jamal and Jason during the mavs and golden state game during the end of the third quarter.
These videos are great!
Waiting on that Shaq/Kobe video. We know what went on then and over the years but need it in a distinct format, which you are about.
I had a 3 J's poster in my room. LOL. Awesome video.
Beef History is the best
Thanks for laying this out.. i was pissed when we traded Jim Jackson. U forgot to mentiom we got Shawn Bradley n return. But thats for a diff story.
Incredible fun fact videos my guy!!
Keep them coming
I always wondered what happen between them I was young around this this time but I remember that Toni Braxton story
I'm almost 30 years old and I still wish this trio would have stayed together so I could have watched them more as a kid😔... still grew up with Michael Finley, Steve Nash, and Dirk, so not too bad🤷♂️
LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!!!!!
great stuff!
Great storytelling. Good job!
the little clips with the captions are killing me. "were gonna lose" "Were gonna lose again" "Its the 80s and I love to clap" "Its the 90's, It's all about pointing" lmfao like what the hell??? so funny
"Triangle please"
As a MFFL (Mavs Fan For Life) this was a very dark time. The Mavs of the 90's had the worst record of any professional sports team over any ten year period ever!!! Don Nelson, Mark Cuban and Dirk saved us!!!
WHR17 Don’t forget Steve Nash and Michael Finley.
Excellent post!
yo what mike is here
Not that excellent. Up and coming pop artist Toni Braxton? She's been out since 1993(Chris Webber rookie season). She went platinum on her first album. She's been up💯
I remember I was in middle school when me and my friends talked about how J-Kidd and JJ was with Toni
great video
4:29 I forgot a human cartoon named Popeye Jones existed in reality haha
Wow dallas had 3 awesome young talents. I recall this & all were just gone. Monster mash & kiddo were so good
Monster Mash could have been so good if he had a coach to develop him
@MARC D.don't know about all that.. I know he had some injury issues & a dysfunctional team that maybe cost him a shot at the hall of fame
He was a lot like Carmelo.....just a pure scorer that cared only about 1 on 1 scoring with no defense.
Not at all.
Good double debunking
Lol wtf? Why do I feel like guys from that era are way more selfish? I can't see any rookie or young guys feuding like that or having egos like that in today's game. Uh, doesn't teamwork win games?
It's always the ones that were pretty good but not great like Latrell Spreewell. They always are way too high on themselves.
Savanna Henry cause if they screw up, they get plastered on social media.
Back in those days, it was blamed on "too much too soon". Nowadays, with rookie scale, it's a lot easier to have a guy like Jim Jackson just drummed out of the league without exploding a team's salary cap. Jackson today would be parked in the G-League or stuck at the end of the bench.
@Fox D : What do you mean "nowadays, it's a lot easier to have a guy like Jim Jackson just drummed out of the league..."?
Jacob Taylor watching this made me a lil worried about my Sixers. I can see Ben being a diva leaving Embiid and Fultz.
The pic of pre-hair Spreewell
Right on the money
what is all this amazing music in the background
I had more Jim Jackson b ball cards than any other player. Still have them !
Good video. Thanks
i would love a series like this just for non-beef related 90s NBA summaries
3:25 OG Stockton short shorts.
These are really well done
Love this series
Throw a bunch of hot shots together and expect it to work... well my friend, the Warriors certainly made it work! Teamwork makes Dreamwork.
The excitement for the Kidd-Jackson-Mashburn trio back then reminds me of the excitement for the Lakers' Ball-Ingram-Kuzma trio now.
Hopefully, they don't start beefing down the line.
I don't think Lonzo will beef with Kuzma. LaVar might though, because Kuzma's a real-deal emerging star and LaVar's ego won't be able to stomach Lonzo not being treated like he's Magic Johnson.
you forgot to add lebron
No,gotta listen to LeBron
RIP
Do Odell Beckham junior vs Josh Norman
Alright SB, these are great and the people need one every other day. GET ON IT!
Dope video... clean
That quote about the fourth jay is actually so fire.
Yo 3:37 I spit my drink out pre-hair sprewell that was awesome
Can we talk about how that Phoenix team Kidd was traded to also had Kevin Johnson, Sam Cassell, and Steve Nash?
You need a build a time machine and show this to the 2009 OKC Thunder! lol
I actually kinda like this, but I want Jon Bois back
Marcus I miss Chart Party and Pretty Good!!
I love all of SB Nation's content. But mostly Jon Bois, he's supposedly coming out with a video this week...
