- "Pen15" creators Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine break down the absurdity of their writing process for the Hulu series, which features the creators as they play two 13-year-olds in the midst of their middle school puberty prime. Joined by comedian Chelsea Peretti, this conversation was presented as part of Variety's Power of Women: Conversations panel.
“We realized with the comedy, we had to keep grounding it because it was already insane that we are playing 13 year olds,” Erskine said. “Because we are doing it at this age, I think everything has to be as grounded as possible and have moments [that are] surreal or absurdist.”

It can’t be understated just how BRILLIANT these ladies are. “Pen15 “ only works because of how talented Maya and Anna are as actresses. It’s been my favorite show since it’s debut! The Gabe storyline in season 2 was done in such a beautiful and relatable way too! Kudos to the brilliant kids on the show as well! ❤️

I completely agree! I was not a product of divorced parents, but the divorce scene completely gutted me to the point where I couldn't imagine what it was like for a 13 year old to experience. Also, the chemistry between Anna and Maya and the child actors was amazing. It didn't feel awkward at all or felt the age difference because they embodied the behavior and mannerisms of a teenager.
Pen15 is a total masterpiece. Quite shocking that it exists. I felt like I was witnessing Mozart work in real time its that good.

I'd give anything for them to make one more season of them going to 8th grade. I love this show and hate to see it end but I'm so glad they made it.

I was looking for Pen15 extras but when I saw Chelsea Peretti's name I've never clicked faster. I smiled through this whole interview!
This show has given me soo much joy, comfort and connection of my younger self not feeling so alone. It helped with reprocessing all those awkward situations at 12/13 age.. But of course with the safety net of humour . 🙌 I relate to Chelsea about vicariously living through their intense friendship. Also i see a lot of guys liking the show in the comments which I'd assumed it'd only really appeal to women because it's through their mainly Anna and Maya's perspective! It's nice to see tbh 🙂 loved this interview as it touched on more sensitive topics. Thank you!
loved this! chelsea came across as genuine and had meaningful insights. i kind of wished they'd gone back to the question about if they'd been seen as weirdos when they were kids, but there were a lot of interesting tangents.

OMG MY FAV COLLABORATION
I only went to one sleepover (and it was at my first best friend's house who was my godmother's sister's daughter...yeah, I know 😂) I remember asking my mom why wasn't I allowed to go to sleepovers as a kid and she said that once I'm at the person's house, there is no longer control of what's going to happen (ex. what their family life looks like, crazy sh** that's gonna unfold, or bullying). The "autonomy" part of it reminded me of that conversation and it's so true.
