    I'm white and 59 years old. My dad taught me from forever that you don't use words that hurt other people. Doesn't matter WHY it hurts somebody, if it hurts you don't use it. You give everyone respect until they prove they don't deserve it.

    I would guess that the popularity of it being offensive really came to in the early 90s with wide-spread consumption of rap by white kids (I was one). I can not recall really hearing it in particular until ~8th grade when my peers and I started listening to "gangsta rap"; early 90s. I've said it before, in anger and as friends; both ways heard in rap. I don't recall when it became offensive, but probably by that time I'd matured to use "proper/adult" language towards others (another one I grew out of was calling everyone "dude" which was apparently very offensive to some of the girls in the dorms). Funny thing, I used to play ball with all black guys in Columbia, there was one in particular who would say "give it to my n-word under the basket" referring to me; I took it as a term of endearment, and legit felt included in their group, some of whom I'd still run into time to time during my college years.
