- (CORRECTION - You CAN get the Old Bear in Carbon Steel. Just not here. And I said Maple once instead of Walnut. SO MANY WOODS!)

The Opinel knife can be found in several museums and is considered among the best designs ever. The Antonini is a great gift for an older Italian guy because it reminds them of their youth in Italy. We have a large Italian population in Belgium who came to my country in the 50s and 60s to work in the coal mines, many of them were very poor but the Antonini was something they could afford.
Nice video! 👍
I own both knives. I can not build up any emotions for the Old Bear. The Opinel has just tradition and the Virobloc system is awesome. In addition, you can modify the Opinels very well. What I would like, however, would be an Opinel Special Edition with a Virobloc made of a kind of copper alloy.
Exactly the comparison I was looking for. Kudos to you, man.
Great comparison! Only have the Opinel so may need to check out an Antonini! Thanks for sharing!
Nice comparison as I need to pick up both.....Thanks for the info.....Good stuff.....
Opinel #6 are my fav
I have both and prefer the Old Bear. The handle and lock work better. Both are awesome though
Im gettin em Both! I donno why know why but I really like these kind of knives that have been around the block and stand on their history and utility.
I love my #8. Great knife....
THANK YOU FOR POSTING this comparison. I like my Opinels EXCEPT that the ring lock moves on me when I am working with the knife and needs to be reset. Old Bear seems to have a more positive ring lock. In my case, Opinels have not been uniform in tension: I have needed to use silicone spray and open and close the knives several times after using them. Old Bear/Antonini now offers this style of knife in several types of wood, blade lengths, and lock finishes. There are Damascus steel collectors knives on offer.
I have a number 8 in white oak/inox blade, I got it cheap and I love it! Great blade shape excellent slicer, great all around knife and you feel pretty cool using an opinel just because its historically classy 👌🏼
Agree. Buy both.
I'm gonna say this is purely a contest of minutia. I've had a few Opinels for years now and I think they're great, and there's a small Old Bear in the mail at the moment for me. If you like one, you'll probably like the other unless there's some preferential issue with one or the other.
I should pick up an Old Bear..I love my Opinels..great cheap knife and it slices so damn good. I keep planning on doing some mods, but I just haven't found the time or ambition, lol.
Informative video 😃
Great video as always sir. Personally, I prefer the Opinel. The Antonini is cooler looking and has a nicer shaped handle. However, I think the Opinel has slightly better steel, is thinner behind the edge, has a better grind consistently out of the box, is slightly lighter, and is significantly cheaper. Plus, it's the original. Definitely like them both, but definitely consider the Opinel better all around. Antonini has a cool "Silcilian" and another called the Coligirone (I believe) that are cool though and look like something Vito Corleone would have carried as a young boy.
Opinel is just bester. It's 2 time cheaper, the steel is better. The old bear knife is just nice to look with its brass ferrule. But opinel still better to use. (And Opinel have so many wood and handle) (And Opinel win also with his old history)
The steel is better on Old Bear (58 HRC)
Opinel have (56 HRC)
I've got a Antonini L Carbon blade in the mail that I'm gifting to the old man for xmas.
Love the Old Bear handle (which is walnut according to their website)
If I could Frankenstein the Opinel blade on the OB handle it would be great.
Yeah I said Maple once and Walnut the rest of the time. 3rd take lol.
Yeah, and the regular Opinel’s handle is made out of beech, not birch....
Wow, that's highly unusual that opinel has been open for over 15 mins and hasn't rusted !
because it's the stainless version ;P
Hah...that is a tough comparison...good advice. For hell sake, they don’t cost that much.
Love me some opinels, same as moras for me. Good for lite duty. The garden model is my favorite.
+1 to the garden model. Spear point is so much nicer than clip point!
Garden one has become my travel knife - not many places where it'd be illegal, and it looks comparatively harmless, yet still super functional. Great knife!
Both knives are great cutting tools.
You can get a purple hornbeam opinel 7 number with a stainless blade on amazon. Haven't seen one with a carbon blade but you could spend a little extra money and buy a new carbon number 7 and change the blade out
We need a battle to the death between the SK Blades Grey Ghost (Buck Marksman in G10 & S35VN) and the Cold Steel AD-15 or perhaps the PM2 (or both!).
Already got two Opinel’s ( slim 10 fillet in Bubinga, #8 trout in oak)
I suppose I should grab an old bear but I’ll get grad the large in olive for variety sake!
Like I need another peasant knife! This is all your fault! 😆
There’s a red handle Opinel #7 stainless on Amazon for $15. It’s sharp but rounded like a butter knife at the tip. Good for 🥪 making, both spreading & cutting off that crust for the kiddos 😁
the one with the round tip is their kid knife
I like my Antonini for the lock. I find the Opinel tends to work loose during use. On the other hand my Opinel Carbonne takes a sharper edge more quickly. Overall I like both knives, but my Old Bear is my EDC it actually fits inside the sleeve for my Opinel 8
I think the Opinel's blade seems to be canted downward in relation to the handle which may or may not be a good thing but for the visual appeal it looks better straighter like the old bear.
Touch of a recurve on the Antonini!!
Nail nick is a tad longer on the Antonini.
The standard Opinel wood is "beech:, not "birch". Beech is used for tool handles of all types. It is much harder, and therefore more durable than birch. Baltic birch plywood is used in cabinetry and "Danish" furniture. Re. blade thickness, "Point 067 inches", not "Zero point 67 inches."
One peasant now $26 poorer after ordering L walnut Old Bear to match my Opinel #8 as kitchen knifes in my camping kits. Save my larger bushcraft knives for tasks, wood prep, etc. Nice! Costly (OK not many $$) but nice. Cheers from New Orleans
What one do you prefer?
@@kylethedalek Both are similar, I prefer the walnut wood.
My only concern towards Old Bear is this random 420 steel where Opinel uses the old (but still good) 12C27, and the price which is more expensive.
MAM, bases in Potugal, also makes traditional inexpensive knives that are quite simple & good, their blade is 420 steel also, and they made a special heat treatment to increase hardness by 2 Rockwell pts on some models.
Opinel hands down, it feels much better and less hooky in any type of pocket
I have a #10 and a #8 in carbon steel. Great kitchen knife. I can get both scary sharp. Since you have both SS and CS which is a better slicer?
The carbon.
i have both and i prefer the opinel hands down. it has a shaper point for piercing. i have them both in carbon. the old bear is still a very nice knife and beautifully made probably with more precision than the opinel but that still does not detract from the opinel. i think the old bear is more showey and the opinal far more practical. both awesome tho and should both be part of anyones collection.
Please give me a link to your earlier vid. about the one with the inlaid boar. Was that an Antonini? Interested in getting one but can' t seem to find. Thanks. I continue to enjoy your videos!
czcams.com/video/I6FFEguJ8Yc/video.html It's a Martins from Portugal. Pretty hard to find over here.
@@SliceyDicey Thank you, will look around.
Good video. It’s funny because you can’t compare the Opinel to any other Opinel-inspired knives in the end because even if the Opinel ends to be slightly cheaper… well, it is because it is the cheapest quality knife in the world. So yes it as its limits but if he can’t beat on some levels, he will beat them on the quality for price ratio. Anyways, the cutting ability of an Opinel is absolutely huge. Finest blades, so easy to maintain.
Thanks for the direct comparison. I hate to say that I don’t have either of these in my collection yet. I want an Opinel with carbon steel and olive wood handle, but that combination doesn’t seem to exist. Do you know if it’s possible to buy two and mix and match parts?
No. They don't come apart.
Slicey Dicey Thanks. Good to know.
The lock ring pops right off. You will need a nail to push out the pin that holds the blade on. I have frankensteined all kinds of opinels together. It is pretty easy. 😃
On the Official Website the Opinel is 11.20$
Does a Big Brown Bear shit in the woods when carrying an Opinel in 12C27?
Hi !There is a lot of talk about copies here on CZcams which of these two is a copy which is original
Huh? Both are legit. Both bought at regular stores not online.
$20 for a knife is not inexpensive. You can get a custom made Guyto knife in Vietnam with custom handle and shealth for that much.
Plus a plane ticket to Vietnam. And that’s a fixed blade. Other than that... good point.
I’m the opposite on the collars. The black tab looks like cheap plastic even though it’s metal, and it’s aesthetically unpleasant anyway. Why not use the same color material?
Dude... my dog chewed my opinel as well!
They think they're sticks!
I got an old bear and the box says the handle wood is american walnut. Looks just like yours.
Ahhh... My box is in German and my German isn't THAT good.
Wanna review/trade a Boker Vox F3?
The Old Bear is a nice looking knife but it’s not enough to get me to switch from Opinel.
No Picket Clip!!!
I just looked at the Antonini website to buy this knife. It’s rubbish! No prices and looks like an obscure ordering process rather than a shop. No Paypal or checkout?
UPDATE: Found a market stall in Bagneres de Bigorre, France today. Bought an Antonini!
I now have four Opinel No8s with different wood handles and an Antonini. All require adjustment for mechanisms and blades to move smoothly.
Antonini uses - 420 stainless
C67 aka 1070 carbon steel
Opinel - 12c27 stainless
XC90 aka 1084 carbon steel
It was the the superior cutting geometry & better steel selection of the opinel that won me over... that said, neither compare with any Spyderco, Benchmade, ect... let alone Microtech, Chris Reeve, Hinderer or Shirogorov
Gonna do you a favor with time management. There is no difference. I have both. No difference.
I'd love a USA made version of these.
Why?
Check out MAM
meow
Cats were very much wanting to be around me today.
I'd go with the Old Bear because I tend to hate EVERYTHING that comes from france!
Cool story.

opinel go to 15
Yes, but really they go to 13.
Несравними. Опинел е класа отгоре!
