Both steels are very well executed. Nice heat treatment etc. I personally think that carbon is a little easier to sharpen but for non knife people who cant sharpen a blade stainless is much more practical.
I'll never understand why people keep using the ferro rod to start a fire EVERY TIME! To me the ferro rod would be a last resort, only to be used when I've exhausted all of my other choices, lighter, matches, magnifying glass, etc.
We appreciate the comments. Practice makes muscle memory and muscle memory eleviates panic in an emergency situation when you might need a fire quickly.
Horses for courses, I guess. Lighters can suck in -30C, matches are hard to use without taking off mittens, and it's not always sunny . I generally default to a Bic in most cases though. Storm matches and the blast match are pretty sweet too. My first go-too in minus stupid degrees at 0 dark stupid O'clock (if the bic doesn't work) is steel wool and a 9 volt battery. If more heat is needed, magnesium filings off the end of my snow shoes can be added.

Smart man! I love seeing wedges used when folding knives are involved. Fixed blades work for battoning but folders, rarely. Great review mate, I enjoyed it. I’ve only ever seen snow once. About 40 years ago. It was so cold. Once was enough.😉 I use my stainless Opinels for food and carbon for everything else. Both work well.
I currently have several Opinel Carbon #8 knives. It is my daily, and I always have one in my pocket. It’s inexpensive and I love it. I use it several times a day for normal tasks. I buy carbon for my fire starting needs, but I’m also careful about rust. There’s an SS version in my fishing kit, though. Someone below said it’s not a survival knife. Big diff between bushcraft and survival. Survival suggests that you didn’t intend to be in that situation, whether through poor planning, or misfortune. In that case, any knife could save your life. Even an Opinel or SAK. For actual bushcraft I prefer a ‘real’ knife, like my BK2. Something I can beat on, if I don’t have my small axe. Good to see your wife jenjoying the outdoors!

Opinel is not a survival knife. Using it to split wood is to what it is really intended for. Light task pocket knife is all it is really good for. I am not putting it down though I keep a opinel carbon number 8 in my pocket every day. Honestly it's one of my favorite knives. Enjoy the video. Made me feel like I was hanging out in the snowy Woods for a bit of time there. And I definitely used to stainless steel like you found out for using a fire starter. Mainly I believe because carbon Blade is a softer Steel. You can definitely you can definitely get a sharper Edge easier with a carbon played but the stainless steel will definitely hold longer.
not really. carbon holds its edge longer and yes easier to sharpen. technical specs imply so, but also tried both and experienced it myself. only advantage of inox is being stainless
I have a carbon steel number 7 opinel and i agree. not great for wood, i was just playing around with a piece of red oak dowel and the blade folded over. But i can get it razor sharp and for just about anything else it does well with. I like my Douk Douk for harder things.
Opinel are for finer working, for batoning the blade is way to narrow. And the blade is not attached sturdy enough to the grip. Opinels basical depend on there cutting ability, everything that includes force is baaaad. I have an Sissipukko for rough and an opinel for finer stuff. Usual two opinel, they have near no weight so if you loose one who cares.
I prefer the stainless, it gets at least as sharp as the carbon one if not sharper and it doesnt have the metal taste on food. By the way, the stainless steel of Opinel is about the same as the Mora steel, 12C27. Cheers!

I don't understand what you're trying to prove opinel number seven is not a big knife it will not take the punishment to Baton on I have 4 opinel knives they're made for carving and skinning animals and as a cooking utensil I can see your just a beginner at this but apreate trying keep it up you will learn it just takes time. I was a child when I started I'm 65 years old now and still dont know everything I do know that I can serive in the bush

You do some fine eating out. I would go with the stainless simply due to the acidic fruit and slightly more hygienic for food prep.

Pulling the ferro rod away from he striker is more stable and more easily aimed.

If the carbon blade get older and develop some patina the food like apples or so dont taste like the blade any more.

You should try anchoring the striker and pulling the ferro rod across it. You get much better control over the sparks
