⏪ Part 1: • If This Wearable Fails...
⏩ Part 2: 🤷♂️
My wearable heads-up display, the Optigon, is coming apart at the seams, but I found the perfect upgrade, the Epson Moverio BT-40. Problem: It shuts off when I disconnect a display, but this 'borg is all-monocular, baybee. Solution: TEN MONTHS of real-deal hardware hacking, complete with signal sniffing, replay attacks, and oodles of solder paste. Oodles! But my new wearable computer, the Voidstar Lab Optigon 2, is done! I'm sorry if I ruined the surprise, but it's more important to stuff this description full of keywords like Internet of Things, How to hack hardware, The best wearable computer, Google Glass, how to make your own wearable computer, and What is Zack Freedman wearing.

This is video evidence of why humanity is failing is such epic fashion. Rather than master the skill of memorizing, this clown just makes a cop-out mechanism. Mailing-it-in, in real life so to speak. Although he is obviously being intentionally dramatic, the failure of any piece of technology captured within one of this man’s videos is absolutely inconsequential. Acting as though this teleprompter solves any problem without adding unnecessary complication is just that, acting.
Well, that's just like your opinion man
ok boomer
And instead of watching the video and moving on about your day doing something productive here you are bitching about a video of a man doing something no body asked you to watch. Congrats on having an opinion and congrats on thinking anybody wanted to hear it. He wanted something so he figured out how make it and did just that and recorded a video of how he did it to inspire others to make things. that my friend is the EXACT opposite of "mailing it in". have a nice day! enjoy it thoroughly.
i cant tell if this is a shitpost or not tbh
@@charliecampbell2292 it reads like one tbh
A trick that you might be able to use: tell the supplier that your company already purchased the thing you want documentation for. We develop test machines and I face the same BS with documentation. I need a software manual, a user manual or something. A sales guy comes back and asks what is the expected purchase amount etc. At this point I tell them we already have the devices and I need the developers documentation. Usually they provide it. If they do not, I tell them we have a subcontractor (which is true - we have several) and one of them has the goods - I am just the top level developer and have no idea who our subcontractor is. I hope this workaround helps you :)
Social hacking ftw.
Yep, classic 'it's not my department' in action, sales people stop caring once they realize they won't get anything out of further interaction, and will just approve whatever request you're making to get you out of the way or pass you off to another department that can process your request who conveniently don't care about the sales gatekeeping. It almost always helps to claim ignorance of what's going on, it being some other shmuck's fault, and trying to garner empathy for your situation, "I got dragged into fixing their shit", as other technical people know all to well that burden and like sailors rescuing enemy sailors in war who know that the sea is the real threat to all sailors, there's a comradery there where the true enemy are the middle managers, corporate policy, and ignorant or incompetent coworkers...
@@msytdc1577 lol I feel like I'm reading something my younger self wrote... Problem is eventually you get promoted to said middle management and then this is the exact thing that will give you grey hairs... Life is annoyingly ironic sometimes... ;)
@@TitanTrigger maybe... don't go to middle management then or make it so they are more aware of the tech dept needs since you've been there idk lol
@@TitanTrigger Bah, sounds like you're not cut out for upper management if you're still thinking of the little guy instead of the bonuses you can get by overpromising, underdelivering, and jumping ship before the project's failures can be discovered, the fault of the new guy for mismanagement or the lowly employees lack of dedication to the company and poor performance, obviously.
I'll bet Epson Tech Dept are seriously scrutinising your video to see what they can learn about their own product. Keep up the great work, Zack.
you jest, but they are legit watching this video with intensity. Not because they can do anything about it, their engineers still eat paste compared to this guy
@@AidanNaut0 why are you insulting people that you don't know?
Especially people who proved that they know what they are doing - you know, by creating a great heads-up display...
@@Jehty21 well, i mean, as great as they get XD. To be fair though, to have a device like this buit by a massive team of profesionales and miss something as simple as being able to have one of the projectors active... Keep in mind theese things are tested and improoved overtime with thousands of functions developed specifically for It, It seems stupid enough that they missed it.
@@Ferrari255GTO To be fair to their engineers, chopping one side of the device off is not an intended use case, so ignoring that variable and doing the simplest thing to achieve the required result is fairly common. Even if the solution that enables decoupling the two sides in firmware would be fairly simple, that's still more resources that are unnecessary if you don't expect anyone to rip your device in half and want it to work afterwards.
@@AidanNaut0 a small transistor to send a Signal for the projector to turno off seems simple enough to me, It wouldn't be notizable in costo if they would've had the function in mind since the start, wich could've been used to save battery or as a preference for the people Who wanted the function, It just seems like a Lost chance to me. Also, i nevera mentioned tearing the device apart, i understand that they're not ment to be worked on as for example the charging port on phones, wich is designed to be easily replaced with it's daughter board.
Props where its due, Epson might not have provided meaningful documentation for a potential developer, but the ones they did provide are exactly the ones someone performing repairs would need.
Also I find it hilarious that you not only hacked the display against their will, you are also providing them a free product placement, free advertisement, personal (involuntary) endorsement, and exposure to hundreds of thousands of wannabe cyborgs, all against their will.
We'll advertise whether they like it or not. I'm a madman.
@@ZackFreedman you had to TALK TO PEOPLE? im so sorry that is the actual worst
@@ZackFreedman you’re a villain, not a monster.
I just found this channel through a 3d printing worm hole.
I'm more of a hammer and nails, goat farmer kinda guy, and I have no idea what any of this is, but I can't stop watching.
Me too.
LOL. at about 10 minutes in I was really questioning what I was watching
" The only thing that saved me from my incompetence was my other incompetence"
This perfectly sums up my love-hate relationship with PCB design.
Yep, mine too. The only thing I'm good at is digital logic.
Task failed successfully.
I can't even describe the immeasurable joy that this project brings a novice hacker like me. I may have to re-watch things 4 times until I can understand what you're actually saying but when I finally get it oh boy is it good. Awesome project man keep up the good work and fight the good fight
Amen. His videos are so dense my dumb brain needs n+1 rewatches to understand it all.
Very relatable!
@@penspencils5564 lol, thats one way to rack up views
I cannot stress this enough, but for a struggling engineering student, you are routinely a major source of inspiration with every project you put out
Same, watching this channel also gave me the motivation I needed to just start my project I had in the planning stage for months. I learned more in a few weeks of building and testing than I would've in another 6 months of design and maths
@@sirspamalot4014 What's the project?
@@michaelhowell8280 Center diff controller for the Subaru STI DCCD. I could've just bought one, but where's the fun in that. Doing well so far, it's pretty simple, but getting better
"puckering so hard the toilet looks like a failed print" oh my god I wish I could use this in everyday life
"The lawyers missed the easter eggs" absolutely killed me with the sheer fucking joy it was delivered with.
"the only thing that saved me from my incompetence was my other incompetence" - same, man, same.
it’s insane how much work, how much time, technical know-how, production, and downright spite zack put into this project. i can’t imagine how he’s going to feel when we tell him they invented much easier teleprompters 60 years ago
All of my projects are motivated by spite. I just don't talk about it because CZcams's algorithms love toxic positivity.
But you see, those are what we call "lame" while this is "rad". Ya dig? :D
The fact it took only 2 components, and both are just a connector with two pins just jumped together... that's just insanely amazing
You've packed more jokes, innuendos and bits into a 23 minute video than marvel has in their entire franchise. I applaud you sir, you're the best youtuber/comedian that has a hacking hobby I know!
I dunno, Iron Man was pretty cheeky and the opening scene of Guardians gets me every time
*good* jokes, you mean. 90% of each of their movies are nothing but jokes (each and every one of them all is as unpalatable as the last)
i think this old tony is a maker with good jokes. hes a machinist tho not a NERD
I love that the previous sponsor considered some of the patron names a liability. It's very on-brand
I worked at an Epson facility in 2014-15. I tested the early version of these glasses. They're really cool. I was hoping they'd be super standard tech by now, but alas they are still expensive and only for extreme hobbyists. I love your videos, and this whole saga!
"You can go curb-stomp a bucket of Legos.." this is the amazing writing I come for. Keep it up Zack! Go Void Star Lab!
zack is exceptional as a communicator, and comedian, he is overflowing with technical determination
Video Idea for next Polycam sponsor: Scan -> Print -> Scan -> Print (repeat until absurd loss of shape fidelity aka cronengberging it.
Ever read Artemis Fowl? Zach is literally who I picture as Foaly. Weirdly enough, he actually lines up pretty well with what I had already pictured when I read the books for the first time eons ago. Zach is literally Foaly. Minus, y'know, two legs and an equestrian torso.
Is just his head hair curly or is all his horse hair curly? Cuz a curly-haired horse would look pretty goofy
Holy fuck, another Artemis Fowl reader??
Artemis Fowl was a favorite series of mine in highschool! Never made this connection myself though lol
Zack - You are my favourite, because NO ONE describes anything like you and every episode is cherry topped with the hilarity that is reading your contributors!
The amount of time these videos must take to make us absolutely under appreciate. Thank you again for this CZcams gold!
This one took a REALLY long time. Remember that my last video was finished over two weeks before I could set it live.
@@ZackFreedman holy &%$@# i didnt think you would reply! This is getting framed LOL #fangirlscreams Seriously after you/re move you have consistently put out great content!!
This is one of the funniest and most interesting videos on CZcams! It's jam packed full of hilarity, interesting titbits of knowledge and it's at pace that almost makes me feel out of breath... he says reclining in his office chair. Rather than dragging out one idea, it's twenty three minutes and thirty six seconds of blistering action. Love it!
Not only are Zack’s projects cool, but the writing is always hilarious and really well done
On top of your technical expertise that is extremely enjoyable to watch, you have a way with words which add a whole 'nother layer to your videos that really set them apart.
Some truly great work on this. The one thing that would drive me nuts is that they don't seem to sit level on your head. I would probably add a counter weight to the 3d printed half but I'm too lazy to build anything remotely as ambitious, so who am I to make suggestions.
Yes, they definitely need a counterweight on the other side. It was driving me nuts the entire video.
Man I'd love to make one of these for myself. I don't have any experience with soldering but I could totally do the rest. Guess this is the perfect excuse to finally learn how to solder.
Damn that is setting yourself up for a frustrating time, not sure I could do it and while I'd not call myself a master I've spent a good deal of time with soldering (and I certainly don't have all the tools, as this is too fine I'd think even for my still good eyes).
I'd suggest getting the feel for soldering on small stuff by buying/using the heap of working ancient smartphones you already have and can get some spare parts for or one step easier and pick a common cheap Arduino like board to buy a small horde of and swap chips - Both are easier but still throwing yourself in near the deep end, perhaps still too close to the rabid shark infested deep end to succeed. At least without learning from and with the help from a master or driving yourself bonkers...
Don't want to dissuade you from having go though, and I wish you luck at keeping the magic smoke in.
Learn how to solder an led to a project board first, it's legit harder than in looks when you have no experience
@@RowdyTheHitman Or find someone who can it its a small board so it dont think it will be that expensive.
This would be micro-soldering, a whole different beast. You would need a microscope and a fair deal of practice and skill, though it's eminently doable by just about anyone. Before diving down said rabbit hole, I'd explore simply outsourcing the pick and place and soldering of the connectors from a PCB manufacturer at the same time the PCB is made for this project.
Check out marcoreps channel, he does a lot of very tiny soldering and has done a few reviews of microscopes for soldering/soldering irons that sort of thing (:
Love that you took us on the whole journey. Even though you were already at the destination. Love how he hack ended up being a simple solve. cant wait to see more about the design/computer side of the journey.
I'm so glad to see this channel took off since I first seen it when you made your home made smart HUD. Hope it keeps going!
Your scripts somehow get better with ever video, not to mention the projects themselves. Absolutely wild.
The determination to hack that damn thing despite the obstacles is very inspiring! And the journey is really well documented and fun to watch. :D
I love not only what you actually do from a technical perspective but also your ability to tell a story and take the audience along with you! It's always a good day when you post stuff :-)
Dont click that guys link or anything.
This entire episode was so fantastic I have no choice but to checkout that patreon link. Thank you for the fantastic content and all of the open source information!
YES!!! I'm so psyched this just dropped, I literally rewatched the first one last night!
watching it again! right now
also, that omni-vise is pretty freaking cool looking
It brought me immeasurable joy that you were able to accomplish what you wanted after the company told you to kick rocks.
Zack, I effing love you! Your humor and nerdiness caught me. You are officially the first channel I ever subscribed and clicked on the bell icon! Good job!
Keep up the great work and alliterations.
These videos make me laugh more than any comedy ever does. Thank you Zack!
Zach, never have I ever in my life felt like I'm watching a Techie from Cyberpunk talk about how they just hacked a new BD-scroller to have better optical resolution and my god it's surreal. This is so fucking cool, and if I wasn't a Techie before I sure the f*** am now!
we are slowly getting there, plus vr-xr stuff is getting more and advanced or mainstream so the BD scrolls are not that far
Half of Zack's stuff is very suitable to be included in a CP2077 cosplay set.
Today's Cyber show was Cyber Exciting to watch(I watched this on my Cyber computer (SO CYBER-EY)). As always, Zack you are cyber best.
Dude I randomly ran across you and your delivery on top of the absolutely nerdy content that I yearn for is top tier. Thank you!
You know with people that have heart of hearing they can use your idea and make a little closed captions display for themselves. You my friend are a hero that I love.
I love this channel. great writing and presentation!
hunter2 as a password. He hides a joke even in the smallest detail :D
Love your videos. Your rapid fire humor makes my brain work to stay in sync while anticipating your next quip. I just discovered your channel and I have a lot of catching up to do! Meanwhile, I am learning many, many things, such as 3D printing wisdom, what I was seeking anyway. Keep it up, please!
I love what this project represents and the message it sends. Epson dismissed you and you said "I'm gonna do this with or without you."
What a maneuver. Too bad Epson didn't know you had the drive to make this happen with or without their help.
Thanks for the great video!
Me lovie long time.
Need to get you scanned with my Artec Eva one day! Very cool man! Love how you just gave Epson the middle finger, its gorgeous. I hope they see this. Great freaking job dude! Keep up it up!
Oh man, Polycam is fine, but your channel's micron-precision scanners are on another level.
I have ADHD diagnosed at 66 years old - now I'm 69. Shockingly similar... software developer until I ended up physically ill from the stress of trading floor... MFA grad in 2019 computational art. Love you man, hooked on your channel, stayed up most of the night wading through them... keep up the fine work. Would love to hear if anyone else is ADHD who subscribes/Patreon to you etc.? Lets hear more on ADHD. Married for 43 years, she is a saint! LOL Is your old lady same?
I subscribed for your 3D printing stuff, but watch all of your videos. Despite barely understanding what you're doing at times, it hella entertaining.
Thank you! I haven't done much 3D printing lately. Next video will focus more on printing and less on electronics.
Same, hoping very much for more about resin printing!
Man, this is platform's finest puns and rapid fire jokes. I am blown away every time =) Oh yeah and the hacks are superb too
Someone at Epson absolutely BEATING the shit out of the air right now. Amazing job, Zack.
Dude, you make advanced projects look so easy! Cheers!
This video is somehow the most satisfying video you've created to date. Love everything about it!
Dude. Mad respect. Definition of tenacity.
Such a great lab, such a tiny hacksaw :D
You should have seen the X-Acto saw this one replaced...
Beyond the cool mod process, I dig your writing & delivery
Huge fun. When I saw the pixelated board at the top of the vid, I just *knew* it was an interposer. From 2007 to 2015, I reverse engineered pretty much every cell phone sold in the west. Lots of I2C busses to interfere with, snoop and spoof. We even made interposer boards that would allow signal interruption/injection on accelerometers in very densely populated boards. 3x3mm^2. You shoulda called me.
I'm excited to learn what "hardware hacking" actually is!
Jesus loves you
@Tim Szabo
I love him too, but this is a video about nerd glasses
It looks a little crooked. You might consider adding a couple weights to the non-display side so it sits more evenly. Assuming it actually bothers you
It bothers me, I think we can all agree that's what's important.
I love this video! It shows the very normal process of trying the most sophisticated solutions first only to land on one of the simplest.
Man I love the brutal honesty, dumb hacks are the best. As soon as I saw it was using an stm32 on the inside I knew this was gonna be a good video. Nice work!
Looking forward to the update video with your first Cease and Desist
C'mon now, they're not Nintendo.
I like to imagine someone at Epson watches your videos, saw this and went "I would've taken the deal"
11:54 The Idiocracy Costco joke lmao. I love it. Great video as always Zack!
I am pretty new to this channel but you have definitely earned yourself my time. Your projects are brilliant and the commentary is genius as well.
Loving these videos. Now I'm not very savy at building something only taking apart inspecting and then pissing my friends and family off for destroying things unintentionally.
My question???
How do I start learning to do what you do now?
I don't even know how to solder that well, but i mean to ask more about how to begin learning to build electronics and understand them. Are there any references you could possibly share to help viewers begin their journey into becoming tech wearing cyborgs?
*Edit. I value dudes opinions and if he trusted a source to explain a project i could really get into without too much experience or cash it would be very helpful.
Sure the information i seek must be available, I'm just asking for a bookmark to begin on the right page. I'm also pretty ADHD and would appreciate clear concise explanation for why something works rather than just getting something to work with an instructable.
I can't personally replicate what Zack does, probably the coolest shit I've seen in CZcams tbh and if it was easier to replicate we'd be seeing lots of copycats already. i don't really have the tools, but maybe there's a channel he likes that makes simpler toys that don't need 3d printing or high tech sponsors/money. Things i can build with older cheaper electronics with lower risk in the event i mess something up (i will definitely mess something up)
He answered your question at 4:25
I would love a mini-series of "how to - blah" from Zack.
4:20
Ok obviously googling would work to find random guides. What I'm asking is if there's any entry level guides for new viewers to follow and get up to speed. Possibly other channels or videos to help get started since his seem so much more expensive and higher difficulty. Maybe there's a few simple projects he can suggest people to try that require little overhead cost and lower skill/understanding.
I'm great at googling things i need, like repairing my devices, modding/rooting phones and PSP/vitas, etc.
I've mostly repaired by changing micro ports after some charging issues. I can definitely figure out how to do something simple with enough research on Google but i don't have a firm grasp on the terminology or groundwork, I'm just following instructions like a gundam or painting by numbers... It's not the same as learning how to paint, or build.
But i still don't actually understand color theory difference of mediums/brushes and techniques and canvas for textures.
Real painters could watch other painters and pick up techniques, sure. But what would be better is intentional demonstration and explanation of certain methods to achieve desirable results.
Sorry for tangent but basically i want some guidance on smaller scale project i or others with less knowledge can use to gain experience.
Google offers no guidance beyond letting me surf other guides that still assume i have a higher understanding
I would get started with Arduino (or similar), simply because of the mountains of documentation available.
Sweet sweet content
This is the first time I’ve come across your channel and dear lord I’m in love. The script is *chefs kiss* perfect. The content is indistinguishable from steak sauce… truly A1. Subbed & notification bell clicked
Zack, you are f*cking hilarious. Never change.. other than to become more skilled. All of the respect to you my dude, you deserve all of it
"Toilet looks like a failed.. print" maybe?.(something)" what? 1:09
Yes, a failed 3d print which would be stringy and messy. The toilet would have a "failed print" inside of it due to the puckering.
Inconceivable!!!! LOL!!! I only can keep up with about 60% of what you say but I watch every video in its entirety. Just awesome!!!! The fast dialog is just as entertaining as the tech.
This is the first video of yours I've ever been recommended or seen. You have a new subscriber.
Damn your content is amazing. Keep it up m8 (btw the patrons reads is one of my favorite parts :) )
Your descriptions are always hilarious
This is pretty much the only channel on which I stay for the Patreon thanks lol
this is, In my opinion, the best culmination of all your videos. amazing job you've done!
this is some solid ass content. really enjoying the watch so far. keep it real bro
Most entertaining 🤣 Techie stuff way over my head though 😵💫 Keep going, eventually I’ll catch up 🏃🏼♂️
this must be one of those great milestones. im so glad to see you having overcome the previously thought impossible!
Dont click this guy, its a scam
Your energy in the first minute of the video for a HUD made it an instant sub, and now I want to be a cyborg too
I understand less than half of what was covered and discussed here. It was an incredibly enjoyable video anyways. Thanks for being you and having a genuine interest and the smarts to show the rest of us cool stuff like this. 👍🏼
Great vid as always ! Half of the tech explanation is outside my knowledge base but still super entertaining and inspiring.
Your Techyness blew me away! Amazing reverse engingeering :D
I know this is an old video now, but I want you to know that this mini-series of hardware hacking videos is my absolute favorite thing you've made and I love everything on the channel. Currently, I'm watching it for the second or third time instead of going to bed at a reasonable hour. Thank you for feeding my insomnia, fellow cyborg.
I love this so much! Glad to see the project finished!
One of if not the most entertaining channel in all of the tubes.
I have not seen a full video from anyone in ages. Great work!
I feel the pain. The Hacksmith built a working light sabre then turned into a CZcams shorts channel with no real videos anymore (how the mighty have fallen). Zack is much easier to take inspiration from, since mere mortals have a hope of replicating what he is doing, and on top of that he actually makes things that are interesting and engaging.
Dude you’re videos are great! Extremely interesting, entertaining, and educational. Thank you very much.
I love your channel for stuff like this. Seriously you are awesome.
Best episode yet! Question: what took longer, the project or the script? Very creative and informative as usual on both fronts. Bravissimo my friend.
Way to go, tried to go the noble route and when the rebuffed your honest attempts you found a work around... Glad it worked out and I can't say I am surprised on how a mega company treated you...
Aside from absolutely loving your scriptwriting and delivery, I love this project...
I love the videos, man. I'm in my mid 30s and just discovering my inner maker; I enjoy being able to watch you on your projects and see the failures; and the process of turning that into a successful build really inspires me to keep going with it. I saw in an older video you were moving out of NY. Were you in the city, or upstate? I left Brooklyn in 2017, so it's cool to see a fellow New Yorker living the dream.
damnit! dude, i was ready to let it go and then.... you do this! take my upvote you bastard!
this channel tickles my cyberpunk fantasies' with the added bonus of crazy coding and tech work. I'd never be able to do this myself but a dude can dream.
Zack's uploads are one of the few videos I actively look forward to
Finally! Turns out you are the belated Man. Epson should know I am personally responsible for multiple BT-40 purchases due to living vicariously through you. Can't wait for following video. Good on ya.
Somehow Just found this channel. 10 minutes in and I subscribed. Fing legend man.
Not only are your designs ingenious and really really cool, your lexicon is out of this world. Pretty impressive for a cyborg
This video was hilarious and an absolute joy to watch. Keep it up!
