  • Arunachal Pradesh & Assam: In this ground report, StratNews Global travels along the Burma border in eastern Arunachal Pradesh from Pangsau Pass to Vijaynagar. In the third and last in our series, 'East Of The Northeast', we fly on board the lifeline provided by the Chinooks of the Indian Air Force's Mighty Talons 124 Helicopter Unit to one of the eastern most inhabited areas and Advanced Landing Grounds of the country. En route and on location, Lt Gen P.C. Nair, Director General, Assam Rifles, Brig Swarn Singh, DIG, 25 Sector and Col Mohit Verma, Commandant, 19 Assam Rifles explain the strategic significance of how India discovered, secured and settled the critical Vijaynagar bowl.
Our team of Amitabh P. Revi and Rohit Pandita travels to Dibrugarh, Lekhapani, Jairampur, Pangsau Pass, Jorhat, Chabua and Vijaynagar, connecting the dots of history to explain the critical importance of these little-known border areas. We document the path-breaking Ledo or Stilwell road, the Pangsau Pass and how NSCN and ULFA insurgents attacked the post there in the run-up to Independence Day in 2022 and re-visit the Vijaynagar Bowl and the history of how two Assam Rifles expeditions, the second led by Brig (later) Major General) A.S.Guraya changed how history and geography are now, and how they fit into India's 'Act East' policy.

My grandparents used to live in TIRAP GATE (near lekhapani) in the sixties. They used to tell me that during the 1962 war the people were very afraid as armymen took almost every corner of the place and took positions for ambush in and around the stilwell road in case the chinese were to come from there. The people at that point of time were also afraid of the Indian army. Feel good to see that this area is getting attention. I am from Margherita and one of my friends lives in Tirap Gate. She told me that the area is much more safe than it used to be just a few days ago. Insurgency has decreased considerably and infrastructure has developed very much.

@@innurabha9348 the road is being constructed and it will take time but you can travel if you want the authentic off-road experience.
Also, most Nepalese and even mizos and others who are families of assam rifles working under british government and later independent Indian govt are not indigenous. The lisus/yobins are the indigenous of this land.
I am not yobin but I will stand with the indigenous people because in arunachal, many refugees, immigrants and even central government employees and mainland Indians have illegally entered our state arunachal and especially my district changlang.
Most of our plain lands in the border areas snatched by the assam government and Bengalis and nepalis settled in those areas.
Whereas our people always had good relations with the authentic assamese tribes of the plains.

Sino-Burma boundary agreement had been signed and effected on ground in 1960. This was known to Indian Foriegn Office. Therefore, it is difficult to believe that 3000 Chinese were likely to tresspass into this salient through Burma, with whom they had settled their border amicably during the previous year. Is this an exercise in narratove building?

Am a maps enthusiast and keep marking places as 'Want to go' on google maps. Vijaynagar was one of those I marked many years considering how the boundaries penetrate/extends into Burma and wondered this must be a very interesting place with a strategic advantage for India. Only today, I was able to learn more about this place. Thank you!

The Miao Vijaynagar whole strecth should be given to BRO for proper implementation of project as well for timely completion of work. Its because of the Hon'ble CM of Arunachal Pradesh atleast these roads are motorable now.. i mean the vehicles are plying at least upto Gandhigram.

Why our frontline soldiers are still using INSAS rifles? Just watched the video issued by North East command too, they also using INSAS rifles While our enemies using AK47 and more advanced rifles.....If production and procurement of AK203 started then these frontline soldiers should have AK203 first, isn't it?
