Bowie's version of this Scott Walker song is truly fascinating. Bowie has a knack for covers, having a Bryan Ferry like ability to take a song and 'make it his own' by virtue of his interpretation.
This man could wear a suit----Yes, lawd! Bowie was an elegant man and so handsome it was absurd. Marvelous creature. Also love his speaking voice. He could read a menu and I would melt in my chair.
For me, the perfect male voice, so unique, so marvelous, I was always in love with him and his voice, thanks technology we have a huge amount of recordings of it, to keep on enjoying it. Love from Argentina.
el scientifico No, you don’t have to do that. In case you haven’t noticed, nobody asked you to upload yourself singing anything at all, because nobody cares.
I was just watching the Scott Walker documentary, on which Bowie was the executive producer, and also appears. Scott Walker influenced him a lot, that low, warm vibrato voice. I didn't know Nite Flights was written by Scott Walker, but I love it. Bowie is my favourite artist ever, also because of it: besides his perfect authorial work, he showed me lots of bands and authors that became what I like to listen and read!
I was late to David Bowie. This is the man 15 year old me fell in love with in 1993. Little did I know then he’d become one of the greatest loves of my life.
For whatever reason, I've really been parking on both Black Tie, White Noise and Buddha of Suburbia lately. Both came out in 1993. Both of these albums kind of get a little lost in the shuffle, but there is a LOT there to love. Awesome performance. Thanks for the post!
Lyrics: There's no hold The moving has come through The danger passing you Turns its face into the heat and runs the tunnels It's so cold The dark dug up by dogs The stitches torn and broke The raw meat fist you choke Has hit the bloodlite Glass traps open and close on nite flights Broken necks feather weights press the walls Be my love, we will be gods on nite flights With only one promise, only one way to fall Glass traps open and close on nite flights Broken necks feather weights press the walls Be my love, we will be gods on nite flights With only one promise, only one way to call On nite flights On nite flights On nite flights Only one way to fall On nite flights On nite flights On nite flights Only one way to fall
I remember reading how he and Eno were so blown away by Scott Walker's original version. They were in Berlin working on Bowie's "Heroes" album, and Eno said, "How do we top that?" Fifteen years later Bowie recorded this cover version.
Nice story , I like very much Scott Walker original version , but Bowie's version is amazing as well ...I love Bowie very much , he is (was) the one and only , amazing unique artist , I really miss him....
It's unbelievable, it can't have been during the "Heroes" sessions because this one was recorded in the summer of 1977 and released in the fall of 77. Nite Flights The Walker Brothers album was recorded in early 1978 and released in the summer of 78, so Bowie and Eno couldn't have talked about Nite Flights until they recorded the Lodger album from fall 1978 to spring 1979 !
Did you hear Walker talking about when Bowie phoned him one time? He recounted it some time between their deaths. Bowie said that he was sitting at home watching the snow fall over Central Park. Walker just thought....well here I am looking out the window in my apartment in London. It was really nothing but somhow touching, you know...how these things can be sometimes
Walter Moylan No, he looked seriously ill and unhealthy- shockingly so- in the years after his heart attack in 04. You’re a moron, and to a battle of wits, you come unarmed.
Let me explain why i think this is especially awesome: David Bowie, THE art rocker who at that time (and even now) was known more in America as the peculiar crooner dude who sang hits like Let's Dance and Modern Love, goes to a late night talk show to present his new work by COVERING THE prince of darkness, the avant garde obscurantist Scott Walker... I can't help but feel Bowie is laughing hard inside that he'd present himself with such stuff. A big inside joke.
It's interesting to listen to this after Scott's original. Bowie does his damnedest to smooth it over, but you can't smooth Scott over. In the end I just go back to the sheer genius that is the original every time.
Yet another spectacular exhibit of Bowie's unparalleled, and iconoclastic artistry. What a treat to see all the talented musical collaborators from the BTWN album on stage with him here. No surprise whatsoever that he was executive producer of the Scott Walker Documentary entitled; 30th Century Man
Scott Walker’s original is so much better, but David loved his work and admired him incredibly, even.calling him his inspiration. Fun to see this interpretation again nonetheless. Thanks so much for posting!
Had he toured Black Tie, White Noise, it would've been awesome and faired better on the charts. Singer on the left is George Simms, a Serious Moonlight tour alumni from 10 years earlier. He had just finished touring with Tin Machine about a year before and most likely didn't want to leave his bride.
I must say I love the original by Scott Walker most...and that is someone who is a huge and passionate admirer of Bowie. In fact, it's hard to say one version is better than the other. I love them both, with all my heart...one the raw original and the other a fantastic take on this with a slightly different spin.
I adore Scott Walker, but this... how could ANYONE do better than this????? Even if Walker wrote the song and made it a great one of course, who could give it a better staging than David Bowie? ...and good hairdresser too :-)
This must have been pretty weird for the average American viewer of The Tonight Show in 1993 to hear a cover of a fairly obscure song being sung by David Bowie. The original LP of Nite Flights wasn't even released in the US in 1978, only available through import via Canada, the UK, Australia/NZ and the Netherlands. I am a huge fan of The Walker Brothers, especially the first four songs on Nite Flights and Scott Walker's subsequent solo career. If they were watching with the closed captions on they would have been mesmerized by the lyrics.
oh how this world is falling apart now that ziggy has departed... come back spaceboy you're presence is urgently required... brilliant clip and thanks for posting
I love his version of this song. While the vocals are very different and special in each version, I prefer the instrumentals in this one. They sound more confident than those in Walker's version. Man, Bowie looked amazing here.
Bowie at his best. I saw him do this live two years later with the wonderful Gail Ann Dorsey on bass and backing vocals, and was lucky enough to get a recording of it. His version knocks the Walkers' into a cocked hat in my opinion, but each to their own.
Looking so exquisitely gorgeous in this period, doing Scott Walker's equally exquisite 'Nite Flights'. Bowie's better vocals go in & out of Walker's & Anthony Newley's. However both men are no David Bowie.

What a VOICE! What a brilliant artist in everything he does! This song is incredible.
greatest singer ever
magnificent suit also
This amazingly talented man has it all...Style, class, talent, looks, voice, moves, clothes...everything!!! His voice can melt ice.
This man could wear a suit----Yes, lawd!
Bowie was an elegant man and so handsome it was absurd.
Marvelous creature. Also love his speaking voice. He could

Could have worn a black bin bag and look good!
So well said!!
Thank god bowies music and life was breathing life into us.
If he was balding none of this…..would mean dust…
Same ..same
For me, the perfect male voice, so unique, so marvelous, I was always in love with him and his voice, thanks technology we have a huge amount of recordings of it, to keep on enjoying it. Love from Argentina.

He (and Mel Torme) are my inspirations. I'll load a video of my singing a bowie song soon
el scientifico No, you don’t have to do that. In case you haven’t noticed, nobody asked you to upload yourself singing anything at all, because nobody cares.
The song is about Argentina
The whole band and backing singers are awesome too! Truly superb cover. I never knew I could miss someone I'd never met so much ...too.

Only Bowie could interpret a brilliant song even more brilliant !
Ahh- Smooth, polished, beautiful, extremely talented - perfection. David Bowie💕
What a superb clip! I miss David Bowie so much. Spaceboy, gone too soon, music genius. R.I.P DAVID BOWIE ROCK LEGEND AND ICON.
Bowie - Gliding through the clouds above a city
Scott Walker - Riding a pegasus over Armageddon
Both are cool.
Riding a pegasus over Armageddon...By George, I think he's got it.
I would have said dinking and partying with the night ladies under a bridge for Scott - that's just me!
Rest in peace David Bowie. you will be forever loved. I estimate in 10 years, people will finally catch up to how ahead of your time you were.
What a generous and grand gesture to present his long awaited new album with his cover of a Scott Walker song.
I am so lucky to have been alive to hear David Bowie's music.
For whatever reason, I've really been parking on both Black Tie, White Noise and Buddha of Suburbia lately. Both came out in 1993. Both of these albums kind of get a little lost in the shuffle, but there is a LOT there to love. Awesome performance. Thanks for the post!
Number 1 David Bowie voce incredibile!
WOW! Fantastic! I never knew I could miss someone I'd never met so much.
I know EXACTLY how you feel...
Me too
What a performer. Missed🙁

Bowie could take any tune or song, sprinkle his dust over it and it becomes another Bowie classic
Moondust will cover you xx
The BEST ONE OF ALL TIMES...
Bowie: Always classy. Haters: Never classy.
Hear, hear!
This is forever on my SpaceFace playlist.
Backing vocals section looks like a Brooklyn real estate agency :) Thank you for the good times Sir.
Could you be more classy and stylish!?? I dont think so!!
You will live forever..
well said! it doesnt get any cooler than bowie
@@sepp8000 yep, couldn't agree more.
Bowie. An otherwordly mix of beauty, vision, disruption and charm. Resistance is futile. We must obey his call.
Very well put.
He is my god ..Rock god
Love this song, and what an elegant man. Peerless!

Scott Walker wasn't doing a tribute to Bowie,
because Bowie learned almost everything stylistically from him back in 1969
Did you hear Walker talking about when Bowie phoned him one time? He recounted it some time between their deaths. Bowie said that he was sitting at home watching the snow fall over Central Park. Walker just thought....well here I am looking out the window in my apartment in London. It was really nothing but somhow touching, you know...how these things can be sometimes
@@peterrooney8236 True
Great version of a great song.
As with James Dean who will eternally look forever young, so will Bowie.
he dead, bro
He looks better dead than most living persons. Ya know what I mean dude.
He was not as young as James Dean who died at the age of24 .....Bowie died with 69 so he didn't look that young anymore
Walter Moylan No, he looked seriously ill and unhealthy- shockingly so- in the years after his heart attack in 04. You’re a moron, and to a battle of wits, you come unarmed.

By far the best version Alive of Scott Walker’s song!! Bowie 🙌🙏
what a great version of an great song!!!

Actually, Scott knew of Bowie, and Bowie was a massive fan of Scott. That’s an important distinction.

Fantastic presentation! I love this album 😊
Tu nous manques David c'est terrible...
Bowie took an idea, a sound, and did his thing to make something very unique and very Bowie. That was one of his skills.
David Bowie, so overwhelming ~

SCOTT WALKER IS THE BEST MALE SINGER EVER... AND A GREAT COMPOSER - NITE FLIGHTS IS AMAZING!!!
My favourite Bowie album, Black Tie, White Noise is an amazing album.
Thank god these wonderful.songs live on although sadly we have lost the artists.R.I.P
So glad you got me. It would have been very sad for me to argue with a music enthusiast on the New Year's Eve. We all need a year of empathy

One of his best!!
The Walker Brothers released the "Nite Flights" album in 1978.
"Low" was released in January 1977, and "Heroes" followed in October 1977.
I love his version of this song. While the vocals are very different and special in each version, I prefer the instrumentals in this one. They sound more confident than those in Walker's version.
Man, Bowie looked amazing here.
Hypnotic.
This one is a new performance for me. Lovely stuff. BTWN wasnt his best ever work but it reminds me of a great period in my life.
