  • The VSCC Loton Park speed hillclimb 2022 is the subject of today's video, following on from last year's vid (I've included a link to it at the end of this one). As in previous years, there were many fantastic vintage cars competing at this VSCC (Vintage Sports Car Club) event. In addition there were some great cars - and a wonderful little 1920s FIAT van - dotted around the Loton Park paddock and in the public car parking area, some vintage (ie up to and including 1930), others post-vintage, and also quite a few post-war classic cars belonging to visitors to Loton Park - for example a fabulous Swiss-registered Jaguar Mk10, a Speedwell Sprite, and LHD examples of MGB and MGC GT.
    Competing cars included a wonderful (later build) ERA single seater, a pair of Bugattis, many entertaining Austin 7s, Rileys, various Frazer Nashes, hillclimb specials (for instance "Grannie"), and a selection of hugely-impressive Edwardian-era, aero-engined, cars which are a joy to behold.
    I must say a Big thanks to the two car entrants that I interviewed for this video, it was very interesting to hear more about their cars and their cars' histories - definitely worth a listen to. Hopefully we'll get to more VSCC events like this one in future - in all, some 368 separate video clips went into making this upload.
    Throughout the day we watched the cars competing against the clock from many different locations along the track at Loton Park. I can't think of many better ways of spending a fine early-autumn day, surrounded by pre-war cars and watching many of them being driven properly around this hillclimb venue's twisting and undulating course. Apologies if we missed anyone out, it wasn't intentional.

    Superb. When I was a youngster they used to hold a hill climb at Castle Howard, North Yorkshire a couple of times each year. I used to live in a nearby village called Welburn. It was great fun to see such a variety of sporting cars. I believe that since Mr. George Howard passed away, hill climbs are no longer held there.

    Though I enjoy the official Hillclimb TV broadcasts and Goodwood MMs, this video far surpasses their best efforts. The combination of incredible minutiae of knowledge and unbridled admiration of these magnificent vehicles shines! The closeups of interiors, drivetrains and of course badges, along with civilized commentary make for an excellent viewing experience. Greetings to the long suffering, but learning Harley, listen to the old man.

    Great video! I appreciate the early morning shots in the fog. Very atmospheric and adds to the vintage flavor. Sitting here in the US heartland, I don't get to see the cars nor action in your story. As a teen, I frequented local SCCA hillclimbs and autocross events and in the fall, the mornings looked very much like what you presented here. You pushed all the right buttons to feel like one was actually there. Thanks for all your videos - well done. Also, glad to see junior engaged.

      @@oldclassiccarUK I am mostly recovered from an accident where I was run over on my 1957 Harley Panhead. AN F350 flipped me up and around a telephone pole nearly crushing my leg in two. Crawling up the driveway I couldn't breathe and found out I had a 6 inch blood clot that broke loose and went to my ears and lungs. As I was recovering I started sourcing machines to build a decent machine shop. Now that I have most of what I need to make parts I am going ot start my CZcams channel. It will be called machines and Motors and will be started with videos of the pre war machines including the first of the projects which is a 1928 Morgan/MG special. It is a 3 wheeler with 4 wheels and has an experimental airplane engine as the power plant. I am hand casting an adapter to connect the engine to an MG 4 speed gearbox. The frame is wood over steel and will be covered with aircraft cloth and sprayed with plasticizer. The next is a Brooklands style Boat tail racer cycle car with a BMW R-100 motor. The third project is project Suito Bandito and is a Porsche 356 that I have widened the body 2 inches with either a turbocharged opposed 4 cylinder or a supercharged flat 6 cylinder. I hope to see you when it gets warmer and I am able to start the channel. Thanks for your great videos.

    Great video OJ, looks a terrific day out. Oe had to admire these owners for the dedication they give to their machines. When I was a teenager in the 1960's there was a car showroom on my way to school located next to my bus stop. In the window was a maroon MK10 Jag, it was like a battleship in size and I literally used to stand and drool over it and I was gutted when it was eventually sold, magnificent cars then and still are now.

    Most people are sadly not into vintage cars these days. Great footage, thanks for sharing these. And thanks for showing lots of the details. It's tricky building a 'vintage' car and having it look actually old. People now build them to look like new old cars. But back in the day specials were built to be used, not shown. So a lot of new specials look too new. I think a new car in the late 20s looked old by the early 30s. That DeHavilland engined special will look great when it looks a bit more used! It's a tricky balance. As a Riley person (I guess) I should like the ERAs but they always seem very tractor like to me. Drivers sat on them, not in them.

      @oldclassiccarUK  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching, there is still interest out there in vintage cars but I think most old-car people start out with later cars, then if they stick with the hobby, many drift back in time with their interests.

    Thanks for making this video. I couldn't make it to Loton Park this year.
    8:25 Wolseley Hornet Specials were supplied without a body for the customer to have one built to his requirements. Eustace Watkins, Wolseley's biggest agent (in London), had many bodies made for these cars by various London coach builders.

    As a fellow owner of a 1932 Morris Minor, you'll be pleased to know that the VSCC placed the post-1930 Minor, including the side-valve models, on its Post-Vintage Thoroughbred List (PVT) back in 2017, so they're now eligible for VSCC events.

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  Před rokem +1

      Yes I remember the ohv vs sidevalve VSCC elligibility debate within Minor circles, hopefully it'll lead to more Minors doing battle in VSCC events against the Austin 7s etc

      @@oldclassiccarUK Sadly, it hasn't appeared to have made any difference. I'm not aware of any SV Minors competing in any VSCC events since they were green lighted back in 2017.

    I'm about to show my ignorence so here goes, why don't the tachometers zero when the engine is stopped, most probably for a very reason but one which escapes me. Very interesting video.
    I once went to an open day at Brooklands (1988) which was also very good included a hill climb event.
    Thanks.
