  • Over 115 Rileys, some vintage, others later post-war classics, make up this upload to the Old Classic Car channel. Riley cars have featured in our own family's motoring past, dad having owned a One-Point-Five saloon and a pair of RMs (one saloon, the other a Roadster) back in the 1960s, and these models - along with many others - are included.
Many pre-war cars are incorporated into this collection, including 9hp Monacos, 12/4s, Sprites and Kestrels, and a multitude of VSCC-elligible racers and specials, as are products of the post-war era including the successful RM series, and those based around the BMC Mini (the Riley Elf), and the Riley Kestrel (part of the ADO16 Austin/Morris range). Less commonly-seen models include the Two-Point-Six and the earlier Pathfinder, neither of which were particularly successful, are here and are both a rare sight today.
Sadly the Riley car name has long since been consigned to the history books and is unlikely to return. Hopefully this compilation will act as a reminder of the many stylish and well-engineered cars they built over a long period of time.
Lots of vintage and classic British cars feature across this classic cars channel now, so please have a virtual walk around before disappearing, and consider subscribing if cars of this type are of interest.

My father was a big Riley fan. In the 80's he used to go to work in a 1936 Sprite. He raced a TT Sprite in historic racing too. Apart from that he had a Lincock, and a Lynx. Lovely cars.

@4:38 This Riley 4/72, HDB 493D, is a Stockport registered car. I owned it in the early 1990's, having bought it from another Stockport owner who'd had it for many years. I may have been the third owner. It was my only car at the time, and as well as using it for work, I took it on a camping tour of the Scottish Highlands, complete with a bike rack on the back and my early Raleigh mountain bike strapped on. I did over 1,600 miles in two weeks, touring up to Cape Wrath, including a diversion onto the Isle of Skye by ferry. A simple puncture near to Ullapool was the only problem. I sold it when I got married. I'm pleased to say that it still resides in Stockport and is used regularly. I now have a 1959 Riley 4/68 🙂

I` Riley` enjoyed this film on the wonderful Riley. I remember my father buying my elder sister a Riley ( Austen 1100 body!) for her to practice her driving. I remember it was old school in the late 70`s but i did love its old school wooden dash board and those 3 chrome rimmed dials that lit up a lovely bright green at night. Really cool but totally unreliable and it had to go, eventually! Fond rose tinted glass memories of this dual toned paint work, purple lower body and cream upper body. In fairness to the old Riley my sister and her friend they did take it on some long country excursions in blind bravado as folk did back in the day on old bumpy country roads. Check the oil!

It was a sad day when Riley was swallowed up by BMC. Their unique styling was lost, apart from the badge many were just posher versions of more basic cars.
I had a gym master who owned a RM and I thought it was the most beautiful car ever.
At a time when my mates were buying A35 vans and Morris Minors etc I bought a 1953 Riley RME for a very cheap price. The first owner was a squadron leader and I was the 6th. To say it had been hammered would be pretty accurate. I kept it for seven years and still regret selling it all these years later. I kept it running on a shoe string and the roof was a patchwork of black tape. The seams went first but it was only the beginning of the roof problems. I stripped the engine to replace the big ends which was very expensive as they had to be re-metalled as they weren't shell bearings. I checked to see if it was still around but couldn't find it. When it was running it was a wonderful car to drive, not fast but very comfortable.
Seeing the video makes me want to own one again but then the practicalities of keeping a second car stops me.
    Thanks for the video

This brings back memories. In 1970 I bought a 1965 Riley 1.5, Bermuda blue with blue and cream leather interior and walnut dash. EAY 582C. I believe they stopped making them in April 1965 and mine was registered in April 1965 so must have been one of the last ones made. It was a lovely car and very lively for its day, 1.5 litre engine and twin carbs in a pretty small car, and with the Morris Minor torsion bar front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering it handled beautifully. Not only did the Riley have the twin carbs, it also had larger Girling drum brakes compared with the smaller Lockheed ones on the Wolseley 1500, plus a rev counter. I had it for a couple of years and swapped it for a Rover 2000 P6. Being a later car it had the same rear lights and front sidelight/indicators as the Austin A40 Farina, which I also owned previously.

What a great video. Riley cars look so elegant. Years ago, our neighbour had a Riley Pathfinder - 2 tone beige, and I was always mystified by the gear lever on the right hand side of the drivers seat ! His sister had a Salmon Pink Riley 1.5. Some beautiful examples in your line up, of yet another 'lost marque'. Thanks Rick - your videos are always so interesting and bring back so many forgotten memories. 🙂

Great video Rick. I love Rileys especially the RMs. The Pathfinders are gorgeous (I didn’t know that nickname, the Ditchfinder) 😂
Very near the end what a gorgeous and unusual colour on that RME.
    Elegant cars.

at 15.39 the car shown is a Kestrel six light fitted with the 12/4 (or 1.5ltr) engine. The car was first registered in Dec 1935 although known as a 1936 model. The photo was taken at Oulton Park Gold cup a few years ago when we were parked alongside some very fine (expensive!) machinery.

I am fascinated by your very first picture of the Riley RM open-top registration FUT 389. That is a registration of my home town Leicester. Colmore Depot used to be the principal Nuffield Group dealer in Charles Street Leicester. I wonder if this vehicle's first home was Leicester or one of the county's towns and vilages nearby?

2nd one, and the red one at 16:41 are DHCs not roadsters. There's a rumour that there are now more pre-war Rileys around than were built prior to WW2 😀 23:45 - that 2-1/2 litre has louvred bonnet sides, not seen that before.

What was the riley equivalent of the wolseley 6/110?

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  Před 8 měsíci

I'm not sure there was one really, there had been the Pathfinder and 2.6 in the 1950s but by the time the Farina-designed cars came along, the biggest Riley was the four-cylinder 4/68 (later 4/72) so not really a rival to the six-cylinder Wolseley, and the Austin Westminster.
