- In today’s Blue Moon Life video, we sit down for a chat to tell you about where we’ve been, where we are now, and where we can take this channel in the future. We have lived aboard the sailboat for 4 years, and have been posting videos on CZcams for more than 3 years. With over 150 videos on the channel, most of which centre around day-to-day aspects of our lives on the boat or on the road, we feel in some ways that we have captured everything we have to share. We aren’t full-time sailors, or full-time vloggers. We have professions and interests outside of the CZcams world, and those have been getting busier over the years. After reflection (it is January 2024), here at the beginning of the new year, we think there is an opportunity to expand the aperture and vision of the channel beyond ourselves. We are looking for your feedback about what you would like to see, and where you think there could be opportunities for us to pivot our style to new content, including new subjects. We are especially interested to hear from you if you live in southern British Columbia and have an interest in partnering with us as we transition to turning the camera around and searching for other stories to tell! This will be a gradual transition, but we wanted to take this opportunity to see what you would be interested in watching as viewers of this channel! Collaborations with other like minded people would be okay, but this is a sailing channel about a beautiful couple and a boat. People are drawn to this channel because of your personalities and your adventurous ways. Gillian has this natural gift of taking the simplest subject matter and turning it into something magical with the camera and the editing is first class. I know it's hard to come up with new content each week when you live in a shoe box at the docks but somehow you guys do it. Whatever direction you take the channel we will still support you 100%.
You do know that the simplicity is why we are here! That's what we desire and live vicariously through you guys!

For what it’s worth, I love your style, your boat, and the beautiful region where you film, so “more of the same” is fine by me! I could watch you put up tarps and make coffee all day; I find it quite relaxing! Collaborations or features on other people would be interesting occasionally, but I might be less interested if each video was about totally different people each time. I am a videography and sailing hobbyist just south of you, but I don’t know that I have much to actually collaborate about, though I wish I did!

I followed your channel from the beginning, and have always really enjoyed the boat work and incredible scenery. Being a PNW, resident myself, I find your sailing content to be inspiring and amazing. That said, it’s not my only interest in life and your proposal to bring other people in front of the camera to explore things like music, maybe homesteading topics, and just presenting other ways of viewing life sounds pretty interesting to me, and I would continue to watch either way.

Been watching since beginning and your channel is one of my favs and it’s because of you two. Your easy going style is a great compliment to the beautiful scenery there. Boat life, though boring at times is interesting and appealing to those of us land-bound. You keep it real and it’s appreciated. If you’re getting burned out and are busy, take a break. But come back as you are. There is something about you making coffee or lighting that blue stove. Not sure other content would be as interesting. I’ve watched your videos for a long while and always enjoyed the relaxed nature and vibe you give off. Whatever you choose to do I’ll be along for the ride, whether it’s one video or many videos. I do enjoy channels looking at alternative lifestyles and where you are based is so different to where I live snd I love seeing the scenery and way of life you follow. Just because you are doing videos of others doesn’t mean you can’t still be in camera. I love channels like Drake Paragon where he visits new and out of the way places and interviews locals, everyone has a story it’s just getting it out of them and showcasing that in a respectful manner. Your channel popped up and even without a ton of sailing content, I've enjoyed every episode. Your editing skills are excellent. Completely get the need for a change, for all the reasons you mention. I admire that you're setting yourselves a new challenge and direction. As many have said, your own personas and style are part of why i watch - so I agree that keeping yourselves as part of the story, if in a much more limited way, would appeal to me. Not sure exactly how that flows, but you all are talented videographers - i think you'll find a way. Perhaps anchoring each story to include the subjects own unique coffee ritual would be fun - it's certainly been a cute and meditative feature of your channel. Thank y for 3years!

Its good for you to do this reality check. How many TV shows last forever? Few. What does seem to last forever is entertainment and production. A shift in this direction deserves consideration.
I love your contemplative video style in harmony with nature and the pacing of them. I believe you have a place on CZcams and in our hearts. It allows us to mentally recharge and appreciate the nature around you.
I think you still have many beautiful things to produce. I will continue to follow you according to your decision. I know it can demand a lot of work to juggle your regular job and the production of your segments; we understand that. It's very human, after all!
If I may offer some suggestions for your channel: perhaps do some live sessions where people could suggest video topics or discussions. You could create informative documentaries in the style of Jacques Cousteau about oceanic nature or climate issues.

Life is exploration. Whatever we do or wherever we go, we are looking for and seeing many different things.. sometimes life is calm, sometimes hectic. do I have a channel that includes other people or other aspects of a life is always going to be interesting. I said go for it and don’t worry everything will be just fine
For some reason your channel fails to pop up regularly so every month or so I search the name 'blue moon sailing' and catch up. One of the reasons I do is because i can ALWAYS recognize your production style, so soft and melodic and laid back - your channel is a breath of fresh air. Hence, I am going to catch up on the missed episodes - am I ever glad I ALWAYS like the videos so I know fairly quickly if it is a repeat - because the laid back style does not always make that immediately apparent.
That said, it is your channel and do with it as you please. If you can keep, or revert a portion of the time, to the quiet - Wait, if you every want to do spicy "Wow, was that ever a splendid / horrific sail" or boat repairs, or whatever do not stop on my account! All those other channels do not have it all wrong, and be good for a change.
I will give a watch to your alternative content. And hey, feel free to get in front of the cameras some dude, you are very photogenic as well.
In all, thank you both for MANY hours of pleasure delivered interminably.
If you look at the algorithms for sailing channels you will find they are pretty flat,
A lot of the original sailing channels have bought big fancy boats etc. and are losing subs or at least views.
Myself, I like channels like yours that show us what's obtainable and real.
My vote is add those ideas you have but don't lose touch with why people like watching your channel.
I like that Gillian is very handy and makes a mean coffee, I would watch repairs, decorating, chores etc. all day.
I find your videos relaxing, informative and gives me hope I can achieve a similar lifestyle someday.

One of the Greatest Assets of your channel is Jill's charismatic personality. this should not be overlooked. In another venture This may be less a part of the end user experience. more tangible assets will be more important. (Practical production skills)
First, I like to say good luck in anything you choose to do. Only you two can make that decision. I personally subscribe to over 200 channels and not one of them is related to a channel that shares stories of others. Matter of fact, when I search for off grid living and topics like that, I make sure I search -"Exploring Alternatives" so I don't see them in my search results. I like to watch channels who focus on their own life. I often see channels of couples that decide to start a business to help others and quit their own channel. I always remove notifications for the channel and even drop them. To me, youtube is about entertainment. I am just not entertained by channels showing stories of other channels. But that is just me. I really enjoyed your channel and again, wish you nothing but good luck and success.

Most channels make a big play on it being "my channel" and exclude others. You have a real chance to develop Blue Moon because you don't have the egos that inhibit the others. You'll be great at it.

Fantastic to see you two grow. I've watched you for a couple of years admiring how you are prepared to put yourselves "out there". I also have a huge appreciation of the effort required to produce good quality videos. The bigger question is probably what do you guys want to do? Do you want to be a little bit of everything? I suspect being successful vloggers comes from committing to it near 100%, which is going to be true for about anything in life. I personally think you can succeed however you choose to move forward from here, but only if driving it with your passion. I'm dubious about the approach of trying to follow viewer ideas. I've enjoyed following your channel and have learned a lot from your sailing/boat content, and think the main message I heard in this episode was "we feel we don't have any more stories or anything else to share . . ."
Whatever comes next, you have my best wishes for success, and if it's this channel, I'll continue to watch!

Missed you guys. Always enjoy your quiet peaceful style. Will miss our Sundays together. Hope you still film if/when you are out and about on your boat during the summer. Been my favorite channel since the beginning, on the boat and your travels. Good thoughts for the new year and beyond.
We have always just been fair weather sailors. We did some summers in the San Juan's in Washington early on, Wallowa Lake in eastern Oregon while we had the dry cabin there, then a couple years here on the Oregon coast on a small lake closer to home. We sold the boat after building a small off grid shed to cabin here on the lake this summer.
I completely redid the boat to all solar and wind power right after we bought it 16 years ago. We used a small electric outboard but mostly just sailed by wind power. We lived off grid on a small farm with a micro-hydro generator until we added solar right before Y2k. We have had a small electric car for 12 years that we charge with those solar panels. We had a small Class A RV for a few years but now just a short Chevy van for short trips up and down the Oregon coast. I will be 68 in March....James

I started watching when Gillian bought "Blue Moon", and was moving her to Victoria. I subed and have continued to follow because I really enjoy your interactions with each other, you bring out the best in you. I would never try to dictate how yow live your life IT IS YOUR LIFE, not mine. One thing we must all be aware of, things that don't grow and change DIE. Being from warm and sunny Alberta(lol), I wouldn't be of much help in your new direction ideas, other than to say "go for it", I will continue to follow, and support you as I do now.

Good luck with whatever you do. I've been subscribed to your channel for a little while now and as you pointed out trying to create content while holding down full time jobs isn't easy, whereas a couple of other sailing channels that I follow, CZcams is their full time job. As for content ideas, I don't follow a lot of channels, but I haven't seen any one visiting the various anchorages in and around British Columbia , usually it's some tropical location. I don't really know much about your area, but maybe there's something there that viewers would find interesting.

Destination Adventure does a great job of interviewing people and balancing with content about his adventures. Your subscribers may appreciate that blend between the focus on other people but also some content about your adventures. Keep up the good work and only post when it works for your life demands.

Hi, I have been watching your videos from the beginning. I am retired, live in Scotland but have family in Canada, including since last year, Metro Vancouver. I have enjoyed what you do, although obviously sometimes, especially during the last year, it may seem a bit repetitive. Still it is always an interesting window on life and living in Western Canada, especially your life. I think it would be important for you both to try to continue to be involved because you are the faces of Blue Moon Life. I think you are to be commended for trying to freshen things up and to do some different things - that's how the world evolves anyway. Let's see where it takes you (and us the viewers). Love watching you two. Years ago there was an authour who published on a monthly named Boat Journal. It carried listings and ads in a very balanced way. This particular authour wrote an article named " Musings of a wharf rat" and covered the ongoings of dock life and some other relatable subjects sometimes philosophical and even Rick Mercer style rants. Highly enjoyable and relatable to all and as i li ved onboard at the time very much enjoyed his quite sharable musings. He eventually had to shelf his pen as he was a bank manager and subsequentialy transferred to a location down east. I really miss his contributions greatly. Dont know if that sort of writing appeals to you but i think it would be a nice fit and able to cover a wide range of topics without broaching political lines etc. Give er some thought and reach out if you want. Ive not tried but he might be findable and act as a reference point. Good luck you guys and as has been stated you could describe swizel sticks for 23 minutes and i would still click on. I follow channels because I like the people in the channel, and it feels like I develop a relationship with them - even though we have never met. I will continue to follow the channel, and I think the new direction is very exciting. You are too young to be stuck in one format. (Speaking as Grandpa now.) It is exciting to explore the alternatives (no pun intended) and this is the time to do it. You have a nice style and that will be interesting to see the growth as you step behind the camera.

I subscribed because you're a lovely couple. It doesn't really matter what you film. As far as suggestions; you could reach out to other boaters, who are live aboards and interview/highlight their channels. Homesteading is blowing up at the moment, as well. I'm sure that there are people around your area that you could interview.

1. Yes, I would continue to watch if you were not the main characters, however, don’t loose you style and please join in front of the camera. As others have said, it is your personalities that shine through and why we watch in the first place. Your style is important and keep that when highlighting your subjects, but get involved so you also come through as much as reasonable with your subjects.
2. Yes, of course. Both on the sea and on land. Would love to see the stories of people in the gulf islands. I think there are so many interesting people up and down the gulf that you would expand the views of your subscribers and patrons.
3. I’m an east Canada resident, so unfortunately, don’t know anyone in your area outside of others on CZcams that you could collaborate with. Simon (I’m sure you know him from youtube) would be my only suggestion, but there are so many others.

I subbed to this channel because of you, not others in whom you are interested. However, even though I am far older than you (73), I feel like we have very similar personalities and interests. So I imagine that if you are interested in a particular person or subject matter worthy of making a video, there is a high likelihood that I will also be interested in it. But the most important component of great CZcams channels I favor are made by those creators who are doing what they really want to do. Not doing it to meet a schedule commitment; not doing it primarily to increase subs; and not doing it to increase views or ad revenue. Of course, those things are important and a needed result to make it worth your time. But those results need to be just that, results, and not the objective. The old cliché applies - "Do what you love and the money will follow." So my advice is to do whatever you want to do with your channel as long as it is doing it how you love doing it.

Well you guys are young and change is understandable. Will miss seeing you as often. The reason why I watched was because of an old dream of living on a sailboat. I live far from you and enjoy looking at your scenic area. I’m not exactly clear what you would like to do. Sounds like you are going to be very busy with new responsibilities but at the same time sounds like you want to travel to meet other people and their way of life. The one thing I can think of is going to interview people who live your life on a boat and the see the common things you share plus what you can learn from them. Another is looking at all alternative living. I think in the incoming years with climate, alternative energy and the economy with the rise in cost. More people will be looking towards alternative living.

One video a month is fine. I only send you contributions once a month. Somehow that just feels right. My sad little boat will be in the water some time in the spring of 2025. My plan is to head south to find a place were the weather suits my clothes, or less, as the case may be. Your dreams may vary from mine but that's alright. Tarps and coffee, Jillian and Jonas, cleaning the bottom, I'm good with that too.

I've been following your journey for a little over a year now. Basically since my partner and I bought a sailboat and dreamed about living aboard. You lifestyle has always been an example to us. Our plans have changed a little bit over the time too due to jobs and the process of getting our permanent residency. We are now based in Campbell River with our boat that still needs a lot of work but in the meantime we go on freediving and spearfishing adventures. We have high hopes to one day join our two passions of sailing and spearfishing into one big adventure. We would be really interested in collaborating with you guys in a way that we can share our passion for the ocean. Sail, sustainably catch and cook. My youtube channel is still at the very beginning but I am looking forward to exciting adventures and collaborations this year and I am sure if would help a little to grow my channel and with that hopefully raise awareness for the most sustainable way of eating from the ocean!

Well. Lots of transitions. I had to let go of my own sailboat also named Blue Moon, a 29' Seafarer (similar size to yours); mounting costs and my wife's declining health kept me from sailing her at all in 2023... best of luck to you in the future and keep on sailing.

Answers to questions: 1) Yes, I'd keep watching. 2) Yes, I'd be interested in stories of other people. That sounds like a great idea. However, if they happen to be boaters or live on the water, all the better. I initially followed this channel because of the boating aspect of it, so I'd be most interested if there continued to be some maritime content.
Also, if you do repairs or upgrades to the boat, I'd be interested in seeing them. Or even if you haul the boat out for cleaning or bottom painting, that's interesting to me. And any journeys, of course.
Thanks for your feedback Charles, we appreciate it! And yes, certainly one thing we can probably count on is filming any repairs and upgrades, mostly because we have found it is awesome to have as records for our own maintenance and such!

I am in support of whatever works best for your lives. You are the people that I watch for, the setting and boat life, but I might be interested with a shift, dunno. No pressure to meet a schedule, put out quality over quantity is my thought (since this is not your sole income).

I really don’t think what you guys post will matter. I think people watch your vids just to see how you live your lives. And of course your adventures help keep people coming back. Every day people like you guys that share your life and adventures with the world is why people watch CZcams.
It is not tv where people are acting rolls and not fake like tv is.
We want to see your struggles and your accomplishments.
Myself I am into the boat life videos. People don’t always show how tough it can be and what all it takes to live that kind of life.
More than ever people are looking at alternative life styles. Like you guys are living.. And I watch to learn about boat life and or other life styles. I am over sixty and always have lived traditional life styles that is boring.
So I explore thru people like you that had the courage to step out of your comfort zone. And live life on different terms. So what you do from here on out I will be watching. But like I said I like boat life videos, how you live it, what it takes and I like for CZcamsrs show the hardships and struggles.
If you want to cry let us know if it is to hard and you are tired of it tell us. Give us the low down, we want to know. Dose this suck or is it great for you.
Be yourself and just give us a glimpse into how you chose to live life. But please be honest about do you like boat life or are you wanting to do something else.
To me it is not boring, it is like can I do this ? I am not looking for you to entertain me. I am exploring by seeing how others live life.
People come back to see your blogs because of you! Your adventures your lifestyle, your personalities. It is like a friendship thing.

Unfortunately they get views, so if that’s what you’re looking for then… If you do film it, try to pick your own perspective on it. Not a ‘how to’ but maybe trials and tribulations, highs and lows, or a way to capture how much hard work it really is, or not so hard if that’s your case. You got this 😊

Could you be more vague and general with the options? lol. I get it. You are young professionals living on a boat, making some coin with thistube and have followers. Let's put it on the table though. For Vancouver this is cheap rent so kudos for the idea. Not everyone keeps sailing. Look at GBU , once a pillar of the genre and now farming Puerto Rico . Who knew? I'll check in from time to time and see what's going on but mostly I never expected a whole lot. That's fine, not everyone crosses oceans and Pitch poles. Frankly though I think it's time to trade up the old girl. Get some space to breathe. Anyway have a great year. Live long and prosper.

Hi Mindy - thanks for the question! As you can probably tell, due to the nature of our work, we try to keep it as private and separate from the "CZcams World" as possible!
You have to do what’s best for you, but I watch CZcams for the personal viewpoint. I’ll miss your videos and your channel.

To be honest I really think you should cancel your CZcams page all together reason being is I’ve been following you guys for just over a year and you guys really don’t show any content i mean how many times are you going to show your self making coffee if that’s all you’ve got to say then I think you should just cancel all together like they say do you really like to watch paint dry not really sorry guys!
