To compare this to a Ranger you need to consider the base 4x4 Ranger with the 2.0 (same power as this). When you add tires and bedliner the Ranger is $57.5k and comes with basically nothing, has 2 speakers, steel wheels and a 6 speed auto. You need to jump up to $64k to actually have something that outperforms this in a Ranger, even then its the base model without any luxuries. I still like the Ranger over this all day but it shows how little you get for your money in a new ute in 2023. Personally waiting to see it Mitsubishi or even the next gen Chinese utes can bring some sense to the segment.
Canon X all you need. There are couple of 3rd party providers in Australia that do 10k upgrade kit. This includes towbar, roof racks, suspension, and bullbar. So, though closer to top raters, it’s still 25K less. Only you can decide of this is good value. I would go with X & 10-12k upgrade kit. If you can’t afford that, just go with the suspension upgrade.
Hi who are the 3rd party companies
@@metal.head. Hi, firstly, I would try GWM first. Recently, they have released upgrades for Ute. Also, I would try Savage online, Kings and ABS. Savage is online only, but if you’re comfortable doing your own upgrades, they have many parts. Kings have standard Recks and other accessories. ABS doesn’t make anything specific for GWM, however, if you give them specifications, they can custom rig existing accessories to fit. Hope that helps. C
@@metal.head. Savage is one of them. They seem to have a ton of aftermarket parts for Cannon series.
Sounds like a suspension upgrade and a remap would make this thing a bit of a beast. Especially for the price. You'd still have plenty of change left over compared to an equivalent spec ute from one of the big boys. Still the reliability and longevity questions are yet to be answered. Only time will tell I guess.
Australians have just been conditioned over the years for paying big dollors for vehicles. The funny thing is most people dont own them there for the most are all booked up on finnance debt more debt more debt😂
Interested as to ro why you didnt use crawl mode, when offroading, it would help with the throttle challenges, also the xsr has turn assist to assist tight turning offroad.
Touring and off-roaders will change the suspension including shockers when they lift the vehicle for better clearance. Won't be long for the after market kits to hit the shelves. A throttle controller will allow nine different settings for throttle input, both softer and/or more aggressive. So really, all of your listed short comings are not really.
Throttle controllers are a marketing ploy and a waste of money - with decent terrain modes the job is done without a throttle controller as it does it for you.
Another thing being sold to the masses who are unsuspecting. Unless you have a rubbish 4x4 you don’t need a throttle controller.
I can't believe it does not driving lights in the front bumper. The cut outs are plain to see, but no doing lights. Over $50K, and no driving lights....
Does the centre actually lock on this model ? It doesnt on the x l and base which really lets it down off road
How does it compare to the Nissan SL Warrior?
Hi Sam. Im curious about the steering feel complaint as I have seen another review and I'm pretty certain there was a button on the dash featuring a steering wheel symbol, once touched it gave three options I think.
The results were tremendous in their opinion, I'm struggling to recall if throttle control was varied by options that button offered as well.
Other reviews say the suspension has been altered, 30mm lift, wider track than standard, hence the wheel arch flares but im not in a position to verify this.
In SA (South Africa) it comes standard with winch built into front bar & tow bar built into rear bar, but apparently not compliant with aus standards, hence we wait.
Its certainly got heaps if fruit, the underbody protection is great for a standard factory supplied vehicle, and all that fruit doesn't cause warranty issues, its all covered in the ever so generous warranty, do not overlook that point, as dealers winge about aftermarket attachments voiding warranty in some cases.
Only thing I see could have been better, the front steel bar could have been more protective but im guessing wouldn't be compliant in other world markets.
If, and I say if this had a Japanese badge on it, well just lets say other manufacturers would be in a world of hurt right now, no ifs, no buts, the market would flock to it.
I saw a GWM ute on the road just nth of Gulgong a week ago, it had a very aggressive large mud tyre on off set rims, lifted and it truly looked as an offroad beast should. Amazing how the beefier look bleated out the appearance of the oversized grill, it all became in respective so to speek.
Looked absolutely awesome.
Yes, country life is accepting these utes as an alternative to main players.
Thanks for the comment. There is adjustable steering feel, just makes the resistance heavier or lighter but doesn't remove the feel of relative vaugeness (compared to others in the segment). I don't see it being particularly helpful. Can you link me with the review that is more positive about it? I'm keen to see it.
I spoke to GWM about the suspension specifically, because I wanted to know. And I was told it's unchanged, at least for the Australian market.
I agree, it's a good looking ute. Once the driving experience and ride quality improves even more, it will be right amongst the segment I think. - Sam
@@Drivecomauyeah I drove the Tank 300 recently. It also has 3 steering “feel” modes. I didn’t actually try them out.
@@Drivecomauczcams.com/video/Um18w5Z7tvM/video.htmlsi=bunosBeebgruurYX
@@jerrymyahzcat being its got an electric steering motor on the coloum there is not much that can be done via pressing a button other then weight which is resistance levels, its not like an elctro-hydrulic steering rack which is the best of both worlds. Sadly nearly every new motor vehicle has electric steering these days save for a few from Toyota like Fortuner and Hilux which still retain tried and true and best for feel hydraulic steering but even that is going away with the next generation versions since they are based on TNGA-F platform.
Is it even worth 53k$ ? What will it be worth after 3 years 5k ish ?
Where did you get the 3500kg braked towing?? Other grades only get 3000kg and from reports around the globe this is lower, around the 2250kg mark. I'm not sure GWM have released this info yet for Australia. The tow bars are due in September I hear, only $750 to fit as all the wiring is done.
Oh, and the red calipers go faster.
@@spencerm106I think you mean Stop Faster lol!
The only thing missing where the lower spec utes have is the LANE Change Assist is removed from the top spec ute ..FFS WHY ?
Id hook up a van and start travelling only need to do 90klicks this thing will do it all day &night for the money maybe a decent set of shocks on the front @airbags on the rear thats about all it would need
It's got everything you could want except the most important thing, more power.....
And 9.4L/100Km on a 2L diesel??? Sorento, with a 2.2 L diesel, and 145Kw/450Nm is giving under 7L/100Km. And that is with boat or caravan.
@@carrisasteveinnes1596 - different class of vehicles as such aerodynamics also plays a HUGE part.
Did you mention how much more it costs over the standard GWM ute...?

I could consider the GWM if the engine was bigger. 3.0 L at least.
There is no replacement for displacement
The review is very biased.. credit needs to be given when improvements have been made. It's only fair to compare this bakkie with the Ford XL or XLT with 2.0l SIT engine giving 125Kw.. or the Toyota 2.4GD6. But of course you won't mention those in your reviews, because they are not worth it. Comparison to Ford wildtrack or raptor is not fair.
Typical South African comment reply.
Mate I would rather buy a 2019 used GM Golden Colorado Z71 then this new GMW Cannon SRX but you guys and gals in your country never got that option.
@@351tgv typical bogan! never travel outside australia
@@351tgv No ones stopping you from buying that inferior product. Haha
With better power and torque output this would be a top seller
Always amazed at the underpowered claims, then often the same people say it Chinese, just buy a second hand hilux. How the hell do you justify buying second hand, high mileage Hilux that has similar power that will drive like a five year old car with zero tech, like why?
With a GWM you'll get superior comfort, great tech, truly superior drive as whilst outputs are the same, the GWM is running it thru the 8 speed box.
Disbelievers, read spec below directly from Toyota.
2017 Toyota HiLux SR5 (4x4) Specifications
The HiLux is a four-wheel drive 4 door with 5 seats, powered by a 2.8L DIESEL TURBO 4 engine that has 130 kW of power (at 3400 rpm) and 420 Nm of torque (at 1400 rpm) via a Six-speed Manual
No reason to buy second hand when you can have all the benefits of brand new complete with warranty, haha, it's a no brainer to ponder over.
Just buy it, ignore idiotic advise.
Power and torque on paper is one thing, and the driving experience, gearing etc is another. You'd have to back-to-back compare the two to truly know, but i'd say the 2.8-litre HiLux is better to drive powertrain-wise. The automatic gearbox on the same car also has a higher torque output, so you'd be better comparing apples with apples. - Sam
Thanks Sam, food for thought but I'd be opting for new zero millage with long warranty over the second hand hilux. Had overlooked stats I sourced for Hilux were for manual, yes the auto did have more torque from memory.
Hilux drives well, yes but the interior is far from comfortable, infotainment poor, no good tech at all in comparison to what's on offer here. Having said all that, I'm not in the market for a ute currently but should the coil rear make its way into the Aus market as offered elsewhere, that could certainly sway me over, I have a passionate dislike for leaf sprung vehicles.
@@bens6674 - is that Whiny the Pooh fella?
Go away with your attempt to increase your social media credit score with china. the engine in this vehicle is a simply a DUD no if s or buts about, china produces junk for there market then bring that same junk here.
Totally agree I’m planning to buy an xsr, why in the world would I pay over 50k for a second hand hilux , when I can get a brand new Ute from a great dealer here in Adelaide. By the way when this people come a test this vehicles all they do is try to look at the negative side of it I drove the canon x for a test drive and yes the transmission shifts a bit but the car drives amazingly and for the price I won’t be selfish and complaint.😊
They need a bakkie /ute based suv on this.
Tank 300
@@Bobtubeau interesting
The tank sure looks smaller though
There's a bigger one coming
@@Bobtubeauyes but that based on an even bigger Ute
Has it been tested towing 2 ton for 5 years like tradies do
lol, I haven't seen a single Tradie towing 2 tons except for a rare camping trip. Most tradies uses it closed to empty load.
Yes, GWM better asks Aussie to turn the truck.
You cant compare this to anything else on the market atm because you get the basee model of the competition for the money
Nothing is perfect mate 😊
I really love this car but a bit scaptical. I am worried the availability of spare parts.
more spare parts will be available in Australia compared to any Jeep Grand Cherokee sold...
Given how popular this thing is around the world, parts will be available for years to come. And at far more reasonable prices than FORD or JEEP or TOYOTA!
Good value but lacks the brand and resale value, Chinese checkers
Resale value we don’t even know if we are going to be here when we sell this
In terms of in terms of in terms of.
$32,000 in US dollars. Sadly, they will never be sold in the US as they would get destroyed by the "chicken tax" tariff which has been in place on trucks since the 1960s.
Sub standard braking and motor for starters.
That’s an expensive paperweight
I disagree about wanting all 4 wheels rotating at the same speed. In most cases this is actually not desirable. Because wheels usually track different radii - it’s not often you actually want them all rotating identically and this is where a decent traction control system (possibly even with torque vectoring) or better still, like the Rivian, an electric motor at each wheel to have each wheel completely controlled independently of the others - is preferred. Often times a diff lock just causes both wheels on the axle to spin and slip together.
I suspect that “snorkel” is not sealed and waterproof and thus is just an RAI.
Surely you've never been off road to make an idiot statement like that?
Wait for the BYD H9 in early 2024!
I’d rather buy a 10 year old Hilux SR5 with 200,000kms on it. It’ll be much more reliable
Pay a little more and get a real 4wd.
Or get ripped off by paying more 😅
Cannon?? Why chinese put a name of famous camera from Japan? Did the think they could fool Australians with the name of Japanese camera?
They added an extra N to confuse us ;)
Test drove one....didn't like it...underpowered..weird steering...no adjustment 4 seatbelts
As usually you can see at Chinese cars, this has a lot of show off things and misses real stuff. From what I've seen, suspension tuning and articulation are not off-road ready, tires are not LT and could be bigger, sidesteps are flimsy. Yes, the price is good and interior is nice too. But overall it fills as a raw product and more for show than for real business. And long-term reliability is a question mark. at least for me.
Yeah, but that stuff is fairly minor and adjustable and most utes don't offer that until the 60-70k+ range. People have been driving these around for 3+ years now and there's no complaints (unlike LDV). I don't own one or anything but I may if they do a refresh.
Mate people who make comments that are not based on ownership and personal experience are just plain silly. Should not be biased talk real since and you will be valued. Lol lol lol
yep loom not saying its a bad vehicle but the engineering aspect falls away once you actually start to out it throught test, there is a reason why lots and lots used car dealerships now have these LDV and GWM trucks at the lots waiting for 2nd hand due to Guinee pigs buying them and realising oh crap what have I wasted my money on and then they go to established brands and pay throuygh the nose but at least they are buying quality.
Maybe SAIC and GWM both need to get better teams who know how suspension, steering and brake tuning works or outsource the work to the former GMH teams and current Ford/Toyota teams.
Ain't no way on Gods Earth, am I going to spend over $50K on a Chinese anything. One look at a Cadogan video tells me enough to avoid. Unless "great leaps forward" in quality and reliability have been made...
Look at where most manufacturers have parts made even Euro cars ...... China...
@@shawnc576 hat is different, they are to a high quality standard, this is an actual manufactured vehicle which we know has poor quality and falls apart after 3 years. there is a reason why lots and lots of LDV / GWM owners are dumping their crapboxes for better vehicles from established brands, only need to look at the used car market to see how many of these crap cars are for sale as used.
