Hi :)
Scotty I have a 2008 Pathfinder with about 176,000 miles. Just got told that the cooling line cracked/leaked/broke forget exactly my mechanic said it fried my computer and transmission. I have been watching your videos for a few months now and I know you have said that Nissan transmissions are junk. My mechanic said the same thing but it is paid for and in this state of the country I really can’t afford a car payment. What do you think this is going to cost me if I pull the trigger on it. ($4000.00)
Thanks in advance,
Art Carter Manhein PA

@@jackgahan149 not altogether bad if you can get it super cheap
@@SGTARTFUL Find a used transmission out of a wrecked pathfinder on ebay or save money on the shipping and try to find one locally. Going that route should cost you in the neighborhood of $2000 for the transmission and labor.

Scotty: Just go watch the video....
Just replace the engine and transmission every once in awhile it’ll last forever.

He really didn't teach anything specific about the transmission. He explained how long they last, and a couple electronic bits here and there. I'm not hating on Scotty, I am just saying there wasn't much in transmission specifics.
@@sloughsharkseh3307 I think he did. He made it clear that mechanical wear will not trip trouble codes, because the software writers (employed by the manufacturers) have written the parameters for conditions that will trip codes sufficiently wide, so that substandard performance has to be really substandard before any scantool, no matter how expensive, will actually show that a code-tripping condition exists. That's computer-ese for "they all do that." In other words, garbage in equals garbage out.
@@elcastorgrande And I agree, but if that is more than you have ever learned about transmissions in your entire life, then you really knew nothing about them to begin with.
What'd you learn? That transmissions don't last forever???

That’s a great engine and transmission. Change the fluid and filters often and it will run forever!
utilizing “new technology” like adding a neodmndym magnet inside the pan makes a HUGE difference!! new fluid cleans, and those micro steel particles floating around in the high pressure fluid can settle in some very bad places. the super magnet catches absolutely everything, and it will never break free and accumulate anywhere. the metal paste will go right past any filter + it keeps the filter and flow free. use a 1 x 3/4 x 1/4 magnet

@@danielmeador1991 Scotty himself will tell you that GM doesn't make quality long lasting vehicles
I have a 2012 gmc sierra with the L20 4.8l, and the 4L60 trans. I noticed a "clunk" shift if I slowed for a corner then accelerated just right. I'm the original owner, it was a new vehicle, I took it to the dealer, they test drive it and after I explained, the mechanic knew exactly what I was talking about. He said it was just a quirk of this trans and there was no issue and gmc just hadn't bothered to fix it. 5 years later the truck is running beautifully.
Thanks for explaining your thoughts during trouble shooting. This is a big help to me. I use this to build my knowledge. Thank you!!
Drive it when it's cold , mine has a hundred and seventy-five thousand and slipped a little between 2nd and 3rd, not bad yet
I get the kick on my 2007 Silverado when going on a flat road and not uphill or downhill. Surprisingly it happens less when it is cold outside
RIGGS!
I have 195 k on mine. It has shifted hard into 2nd from first since I bought it at 150 k. Put a load in the bed or a trailer on it and it is smooth as can be.
@@mattschmitt9924 older chevys act that way too
This is exactly what happens in my 09 with 189k. Only when it’s cold out does it shift rough form 1-2. I think the computer must change something with the shift parameters when it’s cold. Once the vehicle gets up to temp and I restart the truck it shifts normal. When the temp is warmer outside it shifts just fine. Even from a cold start. It’s weird.
Scotty: So now I'll take it through some of my neighbor's yards and try out the traction control.
Scotty, after leaving craters of tracks in people's yards: Nope, no problems there, either.
It's amazing how I am looking at buying a used Silverado and you have a video for Silversdos just after starting to re-watch you after a long period of forgetting you and others.

Shift solenoids can cause intermittent issues as they are coils the windings break down the core insulation breaks down and they can be stressed thermally. Wire connections both power and grounds can be intermittent as they stress from age and fatigue.. The way to diagnose mechanical wear is to put pressure gauges in the line taps and check.
I love how he says junkyard and shows a picture of a Chevy dealer
P.S i own a Silverado
I own a 2005 Chevy Colorado :(
My 05 Colorado is still running strong 150k miles. I change oil every 2.5-3k miles

GREAT explanation of mechanical wear-based vs. electronic failure-based problems!! WTG, Scotty😎
Solid info your sharing out there scotty. I have a 08 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab 5.3L and bought it new. I've kept it up supreeeemley. It has aaaaaalways shifted hard, about 65% of the time from 1-2nd. I recently had the transmission fully rebuilt, falsely diagnosed due to droning noise from the exhaust; 3 mechanics later... It was upgraded with heavy duty clutch and ring kits, etc. Still runs great. 181,000m. Still has that jerk 1st - 2nd. Just sayin.
Wish there were more brilliant & honest guys like you for me to take my car to have it looked over or fixed if need be.
my 2008 Chevy has 312,000 miles with original transmission 4x4, and still shifts good, except one time when cylinder 2 was misfiring then it was shifting real bad, but is all good now. I Love my Chevy is a Beast!!
Good videos. Everyday is good to learn a lil more.
Love your show Scotty I think this may have been one of the best you've done you explained in detail about the transmission and about how the computers view the cars and their function what starts to come to my mind after watching a couple of these two computers now may not always tell the truth about how the car really is this is either controlled by the manufacturer in the way they build the computers or the fact that sometimes sensors aren't even read because the parameters are too wide but thanks again this is an excellent video
It's a pleasure and a privilege to watch what you do Scotty.
what scotty says around 2:29 -2:54 is real and very insightful. bmw is basically the opposite of this only requiring readings to be about 5 percent off before tripping a code.
I wouldn't buy an America car period. That's why i own a 94' Celica with over 340,000 miles on it and no Stupid car payments.
Love that camaro in the background, reminds me if my old z28.
Scotty is 100% right about the transmissions on these trucks. We have gm 2500 vans at my job and the engines last forever but the transmissions seem like they always go out around 150k
Great video Scotty! I thought I understood automatic transmissions ok, but your video made it clear for me! I know manual transmissions better from the mechanical side. Your comparison was excellent!
Scotty, you didn't mention the engine mounts. Could give the same symptom.
Need to go into mode 6 and check for pending codes, let you look at parts getting ready to fail
That part about "guys that buy 4X4s beat the crap out of them" needs definition. That applies to guys that do the "monster" thing to them. If you are looking at a 4X4 with stock suspension and stock wheels/tires, those were bought for winter use. Most of the 4X4s in my county are just that...... to get through the snowy/icy winters. I wouldn't be looking at 4X4s on 38" tires and all manner of modifications.... THEN you're looking for trouble.
Scotty I have an 04 Silverado 4 wheel drive with a manual 4-wheel drive and I have had some jerky transmission symptoms when I go from like highway speed and I'm stopped and I'm going red light to red light sometimes when you go to take off nobody kind of an odd shift or a jerk but I've got well over them out of miles that he has on his and is still doing fine

Great advice 👍. Bought a 2001Chevy Tahoe for $4k. Runs great. Only replaced the battery. Thx 😊
I've owned a few of them, and it may be acting up when it's cold. I noticed when mine was first started in the morning time during the winter that they would shift weird until they warmed up a little bit. Most of the time when cold they just shifted much harder.
exactly, just one or two hard shifts in the morning cold, than your fine. I have 202,500 on my 98 silverado, and that has been my experience.
Ok thanks, I thought when mine was shifting from 2nd to 3rd all the time like it was slipping into neutral was because I need to warm it up. Please
I have a brand new 2021 Sierra with 1k miles and when I start it up in the morning it always shifts rough from 1st to 2nd even after a I warm up the engine for a few min, but once the transmission warms up it shifts fine.
@@sergiosays446 the computer lets the transmission warm up first before uses the adaptions tables. so in the morning is just shifts in to the next gear I notice is feels like the Tow/Haul mode. the Tahoe is the same way.
My 09 Silverado shifts rough from 1-2 only when it’s cold. It has 189k. Once the engine and trans are up to temp I restart the truck and it shifts fine. When it’s warmer outside the truck shifts perfectly fine, even from a cold start. This leads me to believe the computer changes the shift parameters when it’s cold out.
I learn something from you every time
I had an older F150 that was doing exact same thing to me and the problem was associated with the odometer that wasn't working at the beginning of the video and the main problem was the ignition switch ( the key hole) it was dirty. Suggestion to Scotty as the owner of an 07 GMC Sierra (Money Pit). Check the front drive shaft u-joints. Replaced the u-joints on mine and it's shifting much better than before around 153000 miles.
I have this same model of 2007 Silverado 1500 LT, but my 4WD shifter is an electronic wheel type of selector to the right of the steering wheel. Needless to say, it's an old truck with over 195K miles on it and yes it does have a rough shift during hard acceleration, but it's a work truck and not my daily driver, so I'm OK with it as long as the transmission isn't slipping or the truck isn't losing acceleration power.
4 wheel drive on dry pavement... oof
change the fluid with amsoil, and put a neodymium magnet in the pan. it will fix itself.
Signature series Amsoil is good for the direct injection also . It helps keep the valves clean with direct injection, but get ready for 100 dollar oil change with a quality filter . It is what it is .
@@williamsidis5489 I was referring to Amsoil heavy duty high temperature transmission fluid. it’s specs exceed the standards
@@davidjames666 Yes I know, but there is a period after the clutchs began to wear that changing transmission fluid is counter productive and flushing exacerbates the problem . If trans fluid wasn't changed initially according to manufacture maintenance specifications. The trucks being used for towing and hard use in general would be more suspect of failing clutch material. I do agree if you use higher quality fluids initially ( or before too much wear or damage accur ),they will better protect and perhaps improve mileage.
My family and I must be really luck when it comes to GM trucks/SUV's (Tahoe's-Yukons). I have owned a 03 silverado 2500/05 GMC 2500/06 Silverado (148,000before I sold it) and currently 2018 silverado-Wife 2003Tahoe/2006 Tahoe (head on collision in 2011 saved her life-totaled) now a 2016 Yukon. Only real issue was water pump on 03 Tahoe went out with 68k, freak thing. Otherwise I have had no major or expensive problems with any of our GM's. 90% family (cattle ranchers/blue collar peeps) own Silverados/Tahoes, never any major issues, super reliable with many miles. I hear Scotty (love you bro) slam GM, however, the trucks and SUV's with the 5.7's and 5.3's will run for 200k plus k miles and still purr. Change your oil q5k!!
My 99 Silverado is reaching 260k and still shifts without a issue, it burns oil a bit and has a uneven idle but I prefer that than finding the extra 5 missing neutrals
Hey scotty if you find the problem please tell us because that happened to my dads Land Rover and it would happen in hot days in the cold the transmission would shift smoothly
Mine always runs at that same indicated temp. I think the gauge actually just shows cold/normal/hot. They just put the numbers on it to make it look more realistic and “truck like” rather than C and H

If the fluid isn't filled with clutch material, I would drop the pan and put a filter in it. Refill with a quality synthetic fluid. Reset taps shift and see how it does. Customer might want to start saving for a trans. That should be a 6l80e, its going to be a pricey rebuild. Like $3k range.
My Nissan started shifting like crap when it got too operating temp and I thought my transmission was going out but the fluid was clean and fresh. They haven't made a really good transmission since the 350, 375B, and 400. It's pretty bad when the guy with the Ford 4r70w has a stronger trans than the typical 4l60e, LoL. I'd bet most Dodge A500 and 518's were better, and that's not saying much until about 99 when Dodge upgraded the internals. I'm not really a fan of any of them..from the factory. Reman with torrington internals & other premium parts, and then you have something.
Been a chevy guy all my life but I gotta admit I am not happy with anything newer than 96 or so ... I just want a freaking Supra already lol
