This quote from Kobe was probably made from early on in his career. I know for a fact that Kobe has Larry Bird on his all-time starting 5. James Worthy once said that guarding Bird is like playing a game of chess. Larry Bird could also do everything on the court from scoring, rebounding, assisting, stealing, and blocking. Prime Larry Bird is one of the most well-rounded players of all time.

Positioning against an opponent and anticipation of their next move. If you're already a step ahead you don't need to be faster. Bird was great at using his body to frame the ball in a box where his opponent couldn't reach it. Anytime a player had an angle to the ball while in birds hands he'd shift or pass the ball. James Worthy said he would rather guard MJ than Bird.
Kareem said Larry was the greatest player he’s ever played against. Over WILT Chamberlain btw.
Jordan says he’s the greatest small forward of all time and the first player he named to his Mt. Rushmore. In Jordan’s prime, he said Bird gave him nightmares and he’s so glad he retired so he can finally win some championships.
Dirk Nowitski says Bird is the GOAT and his famous one legged fade-away was taught to him as a boy by a basketball coach in Germany who studied Larry Bird tapes. So yeah, Dirk’s legendary shot was one of Larry Bird’s many shots.
When a reporter asked Lebron James who was on his Mt. Rushmore, Bird was the second player he said (after Jordan).
Bird is on Kobe’s Mt. Rushmore btw.
Michael Cooper (who Larry said was his best defender) said he would be MENTALLY exhausted and totally drained after guarding Bird and said (outside of the Finals), he’s grateful he only had to guard him twice a year.
Before he passed, in an interview with Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, both were asked who the greatest player of all time is. Wilt said Larry Bird. Bill Russell said “Michael Jordan…but Larry is a close second”.
Magic famously said Larry Bird was the only player he ever feared. That’s the ultimate compliment. 99.9% of NBA players never admitted (publicly) that they fear any other player.
Put it like this, most people would say that the NBA was the toughest era of all time. Larry Bird won three straight MVPs in that era.
The Former Bad Boys are all in their 60s, but besides Bill Laimbeer(who Bird hates to this day) they all borderline worship Larry Bird. Heck listen to Rodman, Isiah, or John Salley (who also says Larry is the GOAT) rave about him.

It’d be good if you said exactly what Kobe said as he went on to compliment Bird and said people should know more about him
Kobe also puts bird in his top 6 don’t take my word for these facts they are easily found on CZcams

YK damn well the media don't care for actual context, that's how it's always been, that's why people say Jordon retired cause of gambling, or Kobe's sexual assault case, or even calling Dirk soft until 2011 when every fucker on ESPN sucked him off for beating lebron or in their retarded words "lebron choked"

This is not a diss people……he was saying that Larry looks slow as shit so how is he getting his shot off still?
That’s why he said he is missing something and he wanted to know what it was because if someone is slow or not fast,
and STILL IS able to get his shots off he knew there was a reason and he was looking for THAT reason.
Do people understand context? Remember at the the beginning of the video the man said that Kobe was a STUDENT of the game
and he was asking so he could get the knowledge he needed.

NEVER. EVER. UNDERESTIMATE Bird's quickness & athleticism. Before the injuries, he could be grease lightning quick, especially with his hands. He also ticked all game long like a marathon runner and could switch to left hand only for an entire game, just to excite his teammates (Ask Seattle: 27 pts after 3 quarters left-handed).
Watch a vid of Bird highlights: He was as quick as the situation required. It was just his Indiana personality that sometimes wanted to get position and see the opposition rather than run around constantly like MJ or Iverson, that had people thinking "slow farmboy". Not so. Watch!

  • @quinngalloway4989
    @quinngalloway4989 Před 2 lety +1

When are we going to retire the the “Larry Bird was only average athletically” takes?
Sure, compared to Jordan, Kobe, or modern players, Bird wasn’t as obviously athletically gifted.
But compared to his peers, during his prime playing years in both college and the NBA, Bird’s athleticism was superior or equal to every SG/SF except for Magic at PG.
Bird’s athleticism didn’t lend itself to highlight clips, but neither do a lot of the things championship-caliber players do-in any sport-that spectators fail to notice.
Take sprinting-speed, for example. When Usain Bolt was crushing the Olympics, a common discussion topic would be, “Should an NFL team sign Usain Bolt to be a punt/kick returner?”
The logic prompting these discussions was, “Since Bolt’s the fastest sprinter ever recorded all an NFL team has to do is teach him how to field punts and/or kicks, let his superior athleticism-sprinting- speed-take over and rack up the TDs!”
    Easy right?
    Not really.
Because track sprinter speed ≠ football sprinting speed.
And football sprinting speed ≠ football game speed.
There’s a lot of factors that account for a person’s athleticism. Some of those things are easy to see. Things like a between-the-legs dunk, vertical leap, strength, etc., but just as many factors-if not more-are not as easily (see: visually) detectable.
Things like hand-eye-coordination, reaction time, peripheral vision, symptomatic nervous response control (aka: “flight or fight” response), game IQ, game EQ, and a bunch of other stuff I will never know because I’m a terrible athlete but I’m a great at listening to people with elite-tier talent and success talking about their experiences in fields that interest me.
And virtually everybody who was anybody during Bird’s prime-opponents and teammates-all say his athleticism was among the best of the best. Either it’s true or they’re all in on the dumbest conspiracy ever perpetrated.
