FACTS! It’s literally a waste of time and money. It’s just like what AC/DC said “it’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll”. Even when you make it to the top all the merchandise and concerts sold goes to all your expenses (traveling, venues, fireworks and promotions) and to the bands managers. That shit that you see on mtv about their “cribs” is all just for show and not real, it’s just to lure fools into coveting a more luxurious lifestyle. So Nergal is telling the truth. If you want to be in a band then do it for the sake of making music not for the illusion of the luxurious lifestyle.

Man, so many people in this comments section are coping hard and getting triggered.
He’s 100% correct. There are far too many bands/artists out there, trying to do the exact same thing that they all are; becoming a well-known/respected artist. Unfortunately, there’s only a limited number of slots available for that. And with an ever-decreasing attention span in the average person, those slots are only going to become fewer and fewer.
Nergal came during a time when it was possible to have a career in music if you had talent, wrote good material, and knew what you were doing. Because the market simply just wasn’t nearly as saturated as it is now.

A lot of the comments are from people that have never toured extensively and given up any ounce of security or stability to do it. I did for almost 5 years and it was some of the best times and worst times of my life.
Being a full time touring musician comes with its challenges. Especially being in a metal band!
The cost of touring for a band is up by I think 200% from even 18 months ago.
I agree with several things Nergal is saying coming from the lens he’s had for several decades but music is and always will be a massive part of my life.
Not playing music for several years once I left touring full time caused some hideous depression until I picked up my guitar again.
Play music. Start a band. Start the most obscure band on the planet as long as you’re having fun and doing it for the right reasons, but anyone that has toured and done the damn thing in the metal world knows exactly what Nergal is talking about.

On the other hand, we need future talent and future bands to keep metal fresh since the older bands will eventually stop putting out music. This is just about making music in general, if you cannot make music on your worst worst day you might as well chalk it up and leave it alone. On top of learning your DAW “good musicians know more than one” you have to market your work, publish it, then look for sync reps which aren’t always receptive to your work. On top of working out bookings etc. You can go 10-15 years without seeing any money even with a degree. It’s legit a labor of love I swear, you have got to love the process to do it, and that’s any genre. Again, unless you’re ready to feel every emotion chasing it you might as well let it be.

Pretty myopic from a guy whose output I respect. Good advice from a perspective of trying to make *money* in music, but there are so many reasons to play, compose and record music that have little to do with commercial considerations. Even if you're working at a SafeWay or a call center, if you put out an album nobody can ever take that away from you! And if you get a nice writeup that makes your day better or do something unique that speaks to people, all the better! Have that mix of realism and outlandish hope that fuels all creative endeavors.
Also, if there are too many bands and albums already and tours are struggling, wouldn't this advice apply to Behemoth deciding whether to clog the pipes as it were with a new album or tour? I'm still enjoying their work so I wouldn't want them to retire, whether they had 300 listeners on lastFM or a million.

This has always been the case since pre-internet in terms of pretty much doing music and playing shows for the love of the music. Today, tho its SO different. How we consume music these days has change drastically. How one is able to acquire the tools to properly record an LP has changed to the point that with a good PC or a Mac, you could pirate your way to many recording software which means those on a budget and not counting the computers, need less hardware in the recording process. The DIY recording/pressing/distro has now been more accessible than ever. For an underground scene, where bands are sleeping on peoples floors after a gig at some DIY show space or whatever, this doesn't mean much but for those who are trying to make it, not even make it big but make it in a way where they can pay their bills and whatnot, I couldn't even imagine.

What he was getting at (not very clearly) is that it is a very difficult life and they make much less money than most people realise - unless you have known or spoken with professional musicians you will not know how difficult a life it is - easy when you are in your 20's but not in your 40's or older. Watch the bus invaders series and look at what bands in their 50's and 60's are doing to make a living - of course they are going to tell their fans they love it. Also, if a band does have some success they get locked into their 'brand' and rarely have any success doing something different.
