    Well I guess he’s right, IF your only goal is to make money. If you feel the urge to express yourself through music, if music is your life. If you can’t conceive your life without rock, if you live, dream and breathe rock and roll and it runs through your veins, start your band.

      It's not just the consistent income he's referring to but the whole lifestyle - have you done that for 10 years or over? Have you ever met anyone who has played in bands at a moderate level for 20-30 years? They make much less money than most think, and the travel gets harder on the body as it ages. And it always plays havoc with their relationships. It's a very difficult life - look at the bus invaders series, especially for those bands over the age of 40. Trust me if you have ever known any or meet any, it's a very difficult life and only for a moderate income at best for most of them, especially nowadays with illegal downloads and 360 deals. Most don't get to the level of Behemoth, or have enough income to make other business and investments that he has. And touring the world is very different to traveling the world - they see virtually nothing of the countries they visit other than motel rooms, record stores and venues. Then add the unavoidable occupational hazard of hearing loss and tinnitus. Nergal knows what he's talking about when he says go to Uni, get a good job, travel and enjoy life. We are all process workers whether we tour the world playing the same setlist, cook the same menu each night, represent clients in court via the same legislation and precedents or build roads. The only creatives who are truly free are those who don't need to do it for money or approval.

      @@forever3797 This is absolutely fucking true. Even huge bands like Slipknot have recently come out to say that they don't even earn that much fucking money lol, Corey says he has just enough to keep his family comfortable and send his kids to college. Which is crazy when you think about it because they the biggest metal band in the world in terms of mainstream.
      This kind of life is not something I could do, I love freedom too much.

      Yeah bro most people don't know how lucky they are to have never 'made it' in the music industry. So funny and sad to see how many people still idolize the rock and roll dream and that you will still be wanting to play for handful of people for a few grand at the age of 50 with no retirement plan. Look at Paul Di Anno from Maiden who sold his royalty rights for his Maiden catalogue early in his career. Now he has to tour the world in a wheelchair and ask Maiden to partially fund his medical expenses. And Maiden was a band that was moderately successful when he left them. Even if he didn't sell his publishing rights, and even with their continued success I doubt those rights would fund a comfortable life for him like the Black album does for Jason Newsted.@@nox-69

    "Don't start yet another band," I somewhat agree with his point of view but you can still pursue a music career as a session vocalist / musician if you like to perform and of course you can always learn in order to teach the next generation. That counts as a "proper job" 😝 If you're pro, you can start bands and projects whenever you like, in whatever style you like.

      @@forfourty8033 He is doing well with Behemoth , but in the other interview for a Polish radio station he confessed that his last tour with other project "Me and that man" was unprofitable . After big investment in for the last album that also guestem Corey Taylor... He also said that - taking into account how much they have stage equipment - they can't afford playing smaller venues - only the biggest . So If you think about it - the stages for big bands are limited indeed and the pockets of young fans are also empty , as we have still deep crisis. Perhaps he should say something more on that issue , but he is right ... I know personaly musicians from metal bands in Poland (also the bass player for Behemoth) and they admit that many times they are playing for free just to be everywhere they can and in order not to be out of the business.

      @@effectosis742 Yes, he has the right to state such an opinion and when he does I have the right to comment. Being in music industry for more than 20 years I know it inside out, including the forces behind the curtain who deal the cards. There may be less offers for musicians, less venues, less everything and that's precisely why more musicians should enter the playground as more unique and more competitive music content should follow. That's the way I see it. His band had its time and their peak of popularity passed some time ago. Perhaps he's the one who should consider stepping down?
      Saying that aspiring musicians should avoid the business because people in general have less time or money for concerts and being involved in other projects is hypocrisy at best.

    • @effectosis742
      @effectosis742 Před rokem +1

      @@forfourty8033 He won't be stepping down quickly because Satanist was his last big hit and he sensed that going this direction might be the best decision . It was indeed a peak for blackened death music - you can't be much more popular with this music . So now he tries to become more doomy.. less speed oriented . How long can he play like that ? For many of these metal singers Ozzy's carreer is the point for reference... and Ozzy is singing like a synthesizer and quite possible that also fake performing ... this may happen to Nergal also . Dimmu Borgir voicalist has a lot of effects and also a voice from backing track .
      Whatever he advices - most of people from black metal community won't care . It will be rather opposite - they will be finally out playing wherever it is possible only to make it worse for him :)

      OR....ppl could just listen to.what draws them in...and avoid what they don't enjoy. Easily done
      Just as older bands don't seem to be credible as 'angry ' to some, some of the younger bands seem like they are all following a set pattern musically. Not all younger bands...but certainly some!!
      Not all older or younger bands are my taste...but it's my choice to not listen. Not my place to suggest they strop doing what they enjoy.
      If a younger band needs established bands to retire to ''make room'' for them that says everything we need to know about the quality of the music being made by the new bands, or their confidence in their own product.
      The established bands didn't have to request that of their predecessors. They paid their dues and made their own way.
