  • Here is how to put an old YJ jeep wrangler into four-wheel-drive. If you want to put your jeep into 4 x 4 mode, and you need to know how to safely shift the transmission on a jeep into four-wheel-drive, this video will show you how. The jeep wrangler four-wheel-drive shift lever is designed to allow you to shift into four wheel high from two wheel high on the transmission well you are driving. All you need to do is pull the lever back to get into 4 wheel high from 2 wheel high. To shift your jeep into four wheel low, you have to be rolling in less than 5 miles an hour with the transmission in neutral, and then pull the shift lever back and to the right to get into 4 x 4 low mode. This is how you safely put an old YJ Jeep Wrangler into four-wheel-drive mode to shift your jeep into four wheel low, you have to be rolling less than 5 miles an hour with the transmission in neutral, and then pull the shift lever back and to the right to get into 4 x 4 low mode. I don't see many of those generation Jeep Wranglers with the square shaped headlamps on the roads anymore like I use to back in the day.

      Just bought a resto a few months ago, 1995 with the 2.5 and Manual too. It’s incredible, my first manual car and I’m hooked. Funnily enough I got my first ever speeding ticket with it the other day. How ironic, probably the slowest car I’ll ever own.

    So yours doesn't need brake on to shift? My 94 cherokee does, so I never tried it with no brake. Thanks for an idea of how to try & very important part on how to disengage as well, no one mentions that anywhere! Thank you.

      You have to shift it very hard, harder than you think as the linkages get rusted up underneath. But yes must be moving to get it into 4x4.

      That vac line is to lock your front wheels. Without it in gaged you will only have one wheel in the front engaged.

    wouldnt own a jeep without a manual transmission, i grew shifting an old 70's chevy truck with a 3 on the tree( column shift for you younger people) when i was 6 yrs old and everything after that was a 4 or 5 speed and now at 58yrs old for 37 yrs I've shifted a 10 speed eaton/fuller turned eaton transmission..once you get that that manual transmition in ya blood and automatic just seems boring and lazy, plus down shifting helps save on ya brakes😁

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  Před rokem

      I think they still actually make a jeep with a manual transmission. A lot of cars don’t have that option anymore.

      @@jayloco7181 When you go around a corner, the four wheels of your vehicle each follow a different path. In order to do this, the wheels must turn at different speeds. Differentials allow the left and right wheels of an axle to turn independently. However, in a part-time 4WD vehicle, the front and rear axles receive the same rotational input when in 4WD and damage can occur if the wheels are unable to slip. You should only use part-time 4WD on slippery or loose surfaces. Note that AWD (full-time 4WD) vehicles DO allow the wheels to move independently. @@zachsteele6964 as a matter of fact I do. My uncle used to own a 1994 Jeep Wrangler 3-speed automatic. It was a four-wheel drive six-cylinder. And my dad owned a 1995 Jeep Wrangler 5-speed manual. Now the 5-speed manual transmission is good because the transmission will never go out but in my personal opinion as to prefer the automatic because it's just a lot more easier when you're going up the mountains with a Jeep Wrangler. If you're taking a 1995 Jeep Wrangler that is a 5-speed manual it's just a pain in the ass to keep shifting all the gears all the time whereas the automatic you can just put it in D and then put in 4-wheel drive and then you just go. So yes I know quite a bit about Jeeps. I also own a 1997 Jeep Cherokee. And that bad boy is automatic. I take care of it all the time.

      No don't ever do it moving. This is a terrible description for new jeepers! Do it at a stop always put it in natural then try and back up 5 ft after you lock it in.
