The controversy began in November 2023 when Principal Scott Johnston told Max Hightower, a transgender senior, that the school had a new policy that only allowed actors to play roles that match their assigned gender at birth. Max had been cast as Ali Hakim, a male character in the musical. After hours of public comment, the school trustees reversed their decision and reinstated Max, and board president Brad Morgan apologized. However, the board later voted to suspend Bennett during a closed session on March 8, 2024, and a spokesperson confirmed that the decision was related to an investigation into the incident.
