TV Character Deaths That Happened Because The Actor Died

- It's always tragic when someone passes away, whether due to disease, a sudden accident, or any other reason. However, the death of a television actor presents a unique problem for the cast and crew of the television program. Should they recast the part in order to keep the character alive and keep possible storylines in place? Or kill off the character as well, even at the cost of interrupting storylines and possibly even the tone of the show? The people behind these shows chose the latter, often giving the characters these actors played the heartfelt sendoff that the actors themselves earned. Here are TV character deaths that happened because the actor died.

What actor's death hit you the hardest?
Where is John Ritter in 8 Simple Rules and Nicholas Colsanto in Cheers ?
None of them
Chadwick Boseman
Miguel Ferrer on NCIS: Los Angeles.
Carol Ann Suzi and John Ritter
Jerry Orbach is so ingrained into Law & Order, it's easy to forget he didn't join the cast until season 3, having appeared as a different character in the first season.
He was a lawyer in the first season
@@Melina-fi3sc Yes, but it is easy to forget considering how long he portrayed Brisco. He was Chris Noth's 3rd partner. His first partner was killed, and Paul Sorvino replaced him in season 2. I don't remember why his character left, but he was replaced by Brisco who stayed after Noth left and had a series of partners over the years.
I had forgotten! Lennie was my fav
@@RemyJackson Paul Sorvino's character was also shot.
@@Devillin I thought he was, but thought i was confusing him forvthe first partner
Lennie Briscoe's death was also mentioned in the episode "Burn Card" from season 18 when Ed Green found himself facing charges for killing a suspect. Green admitted to Van Buren that he started gambling again after Lennie died to which Van Buren replied "Partners aren't forever". It was also mentioned when Rey Curtis returned to bury his wife in "Fed" from season 20. Curtis mentions calling Lennie before he passed
I agree with Donovan - Jerry Orbach was irreplaceable. Both Sam Waterson and Mr. Orbach were given a special citation from the City of New York. They were and are brilliant actors.
Sam Waterston is still around- thank God.
Also, Robert Joy. He also played a dr. in "Terminal Choice".
I wonder who has his eyes
Oh I love Law and Order and when Jerry Orbach passed away, it hit me hard. He was an excellent actor. I will still watch L&O in syndication and see good ol Lennie! May he rest in peace.
He was in the movie, "Dirty Dancing"...
As I told someone else Jerry orbach was best of friends with Patrick swayze
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Cheers. 'Coach" Nicholas Colasanto. He passed away and was replace the next year by 'Woody'. To honor him, a picture of an Indian Chief, Geronimo, that hung in his dressing room was put up on the walls of the bar. I the final episode, right before Sam closes the Bar for the night, he approaches the painting and adjusts it on the wall, an aknowledgement of all Colasanto did the first 8 or so years of the show.
he did the first three seasons, Woody appears in the first episode of season four looking for coach only to find out he'd passed away. Sad note on the adjusting of the picture is that a lot of fans of the show didn't realise it was a tribute to Colasanto and complained that he hadn't been referenced in the finale
Most people don't realize that Colasanto played "Tommy", the local mob boss, in Raging Bull!
Long live Coach!
I was so sad when Jerry died. I grew up with him because I grew up watching Law & Order
Jerry Orbach was the reason I watched Law & Order. A great actor as a great character...
Jerry Orbach did “be our guest” in beauty and the best. He was the voice of my childhood 😔
Wait what?!!! He did?
@@SexyButCurious once you hear it, it can’t be unheard. RIP Lumiere.
*beast
@@tanyairwin3695 Thank goodness for people like you, patrolling the web, looking for spelling mistakes.
@@lindaparker1980 😂
Jim Davis as Jock Ewing on “Dallas” should’ve been on this list.
What about Lee Thompson Young who played Detective Barry Frost on Rizzoli & Isles? The show treated his death with the utmost respect.
And the characters got to grieve realistically and never forgot him. He was remembered up to and including the final episode.
Leo McGarry in The West Wing when John Spencer died. That was such a shock and changed the planned ending of the show. He was an amazing actor.
I was shocked that they didn't mention John spencer on this list.
@@stephaniemajors7697 yeah. It caused such a change. I was surprised too.
Your missing the following:
Mr. Hopper from Sesame Street
Finn from Glee
John Ritter from 8 simple rules
Phil Hartman from News Radio
David Strickland from Suddenly Susan
Mrs. Krabapple from The Simpsons
Leo from The West Wing
Mr miyagi as well
Mr Andrews Riverdale
Finn was on a previous list. John Ritter was also on that list.
Livia Soprano from The Sopranos
How about the old man bartender from Cheers.
Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterston turned 'Law and Order' into 'must see' TV. But there was another untimely death of note when Steven Hill died not long after he left the show in 2000. As District Attorney Adam Shiff, he was the only surviving original cast member still with the show.
He was on "Mission Impossible" ...for the first year or was it two...
@@janeiwasduncan8463 He was? Are you confusing him with Martin Landau?
@V P That's a matter of opinion. Personally, I never liked Michael Moriarty.
When Jerry Orbach died, his character was written off as having retired and moved away. The character didn’t die until later.
Actually he was getting into a spin off and shot 2 episodes before he died
Lenny did not have to die he could have retired I think think that Jerry left not only because of his was Ill but because he was getting old
Jerry Orbach’s death is depressing. Next to Jack, Lennie was a great character in Law & Order.
I'll only watch L&O if it's an episode with Briscoe
Wouldn't you have loved a crossover with NYPD Blue with a conversation with Briscoe and Sipowicz?
They did get his death wrong, it was mentioned in the main series as well as by Chris Noths character.
@@kurtsnyder4752 Yes, that would’ve been a great
He be miss a lot he petty places in heaven Rest In Peace well they forgot he two Disney cartoons movie
I really liked Jerry Orbach in everything he was in.
He is the original and only *Lumiere* from Beauty & the Beast. 🤗🥰😇
Me too!!
Even in Buck Rogers LMAO
how could you leave Will Geer off this list? He played the beloved Grandpa Walton on the first 6 season of The Waltons and sadly passed away before the beginning of season 7 and was honored by the cast of the show in a 2 part episode at the beginning of season 7
Then Ellen Corey and Ralph Waite also died too.
Jerry Orbach *was* *"Law & Order."*
He still is. Even in death.
Smallville made a brilliant move in creating a role for Chris Reeve. A passing of the torch so to speak.
REEVE! He’s not Keanu
@@DW3010 My fault.
Selma Diamond and Florence Halop who played the bailiffs on Night Court.
Adam Cahn
Great shows, Hillsteet Blues, Mike and Molly, Grace Under Fire
Damn I was just going through the CZcams rabbit hole... Saw ur comment and a flood of Night Court scenes just ran through my mind... Growing up, my entire family watched the show together... Now I'm old and half my family has passed away and my memories off things like Night Court are all I have left of them... Florence and Selma... Loved their attitudes and their characters on the show... You really got no idea how ur simple comment made my morning
@@mmsizzlak You have no idea how much your comment meant to me. It really made my day.

John Ritter 8 Simple Rules hurt the most. He was also main actor on Three,s Company.
Scrubs gave him a great sendoff too for his role as J.D.'s dad.
Very sad and too soon
That made me very sad
You forgot Dan Blocker, Hoss on "Bonanza."
Jerry Orbach’s death hit me the hardest.
❤💔❤💔❤💔❤💔❤💔❤💔❤💔❤
Hal Linden (Barney Miller) was with Jack Soo at the hospital when they wheeled him in for surgery (which he wouldn't survive). The last words Jack said to Hal in reference to his illness were, "It must have been the coffee."
They also mentioned Lenny Briscoe in an episode when s character came back for an episode when his wife died.
You forgot Miguel Ferrer from NCIS:Los Angeles!
There's also Mr Hooper from Sesame Street. That probably made a lot of little kids cry
I'm a adult, and that scene is so horribly sad, I still cry.
@@christianlorre me too
I'm 44 and totally remember that happening
I love how respectful this video was done. Thank you for that. 🤗🥰
Jerry Orbach was great as lumiere in beauty and the beast.
Jerry Orbach was the face of Law and Order . The show just wasn't the same without him .
Luke perry of riverdale such a guy
And Beverly Hills 90210 ( the original). How can you not mention that also???
@@steveespinola7652 we are of a different older generation my friend
Ralph Waite, while not a regular, played Gibbs' father in quite a few episodes of NCIS. They did a nice tribute episode after he died.
The craziest TV death in the UK is the death of John Thaw, the actor who played Inspector Morse, during the filming of the very episode where his character also dies. The episode was based on the final book of the series by Colin Dexter that also deals with the death of Morse.
I never knew that. Thanks.
I see lots of people mentioning Jerry Orbach (Law & Order) and John Ritter; John Ritter was on an episode of Law & Order SVU a year before he died.
Sweetie, the only people who HAVEN'T been on Law&Order are you and me.
And he played a bad guy...a real change for him...
"Let's be careful out there."
and I always was...I wish I had a sergeant like that..
Lenny made Law & Order
Carry Fisher and her mother died almost together, utub needs to revamp Those Two stories again, loved Debbie in All Her Uplifting Movie's And her singing.🚀🌕⭐🌧☔singing in the rain🌞🌈.
R.I.P Leonard Nimoy , NEVER FORGOTTEN ALWAYS WITH US
Live Long and Prosper In the Afterlife
I miss DeForest Kelley and James Doohan was well. Grace Lee Whitney died too. Robert Vaughn (Napoleon Solo in "MFU") also died.
Jack was often the funniest character on Barney Miller followed by Abe Vigoba as Fish. RIP to both wonderful actors.
The producers and actors of Barney Miller was very respectful to Jack Soo by giving him a remembrance tribute episode. Abe Vigoda aka Fish died decades later contrary to urban myth.
Abe Vigoda died in 2016, Barney Miller ended in 1982. Character Fish's exit from the show was because of retirement, not death.
Loved Jerry Orbach's character on law and order. Never really watched after he died
I miss Lennie.
Jerry Orbach’s death. I loved his character on Law and Order.
Julie H I got Jerry’s autograph on the picture he wrote To Sherry Best wishes Jerry Orbach I hope you will reply to this
@@sherryhannah498 that is so cool. He was a wonderful actor. He was also on Murder She Wrote. I liked him on that show, too.
@@julieh9679 did you know Jerry was a singer???????!!!!!! .......he on CZcams he had a good voice
@@sherryhannah498 I didn’t know that. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks!
Jerry Orbach and Miguel Ferrer. I remember that Miguel was also the son of José and played in "Star Trek :SFS".
Missing:
John Ritter
Nicholas Colasanto Coach of Cheers
Will Geer Grandpa of The Waltons
Freddie Prinze
Larry Hagman
This video is part two the other video from 9 months ago has John Ritter in it.
Dan Blocker
Prinze the most tragic
Dan Blocker as Hoss Cartwright should be on this list !!!!!!!!
What about Hoss? Without him, Bonanza was practically doomed. He was the heart and soul of the show!!!
You are so right about that.
sad to these passings
how can you reference Vera in Cheers and then not mention the fact that coach died in Cheers because Nicholas Colasanto died? :(
My oldest sister and her husband were lucky to be able to join Nicholas Courtney and Jimmy Doohan in a hotel bar during a Star Trek Convention. My sister told me that both of them regaled them with war stories of when they were in WWII with both humor and great humanity. We have lost two great people and two great characters that will never be replaced.
Don't forget when Dan Blocker of Bonanza died, they wrote a few lines into an episode indicating that Hoss had died and implying that he had drowned while saving someone else form drowning. Also, didn't they do something similar with Kate of The Real McCoys when the actress died?
I'm pretty sure there is an episode of Law & Order where Green finds out that Lennie is dead.
Actually there was an episode where Van Buren and Rey Curtis recall Lennie.
Kristoff st john he was on the young and the restless he isn't on the list but still heartbreaking
😢😢😢
Yes 🥺
Could probably do a list for soap opera stars that passed during their runs.
This is a really nicely put together a video. Thanks for posting.
No mention of Mr. Hooper?
Don't forget about John Ritter (8 Simple Rules) and David Strickland (Suddenly Susan).
In the Law & Order segment why is there a clip of Orbach's replacement, Dennis Farina? He did 1 or 2 seasons and also has since passed on.
Paul Hennessy on 8 Simple Rules
Mrs. Krabappel,Lionel Hutz & Troy McClure on The Simpsons
Bill McNeal on NewsRadio
Dr. Kroger on Monk
Doyle on Angel
You're missing many.
For example Dr. Charles Kroger (Stanley Kamel), Adrian Monk's therapist in Monk
or less known Ike Johnson (John Hancock), the bartender in Love and War
That's on a previous video
Larry hagman as JR Ewing from Dallas
He died after the show finished. They tried to bring it back but it didn't make it with the new cast of characters.
Theirs luke Perry from riverdale
I was just about to type it, but you read my mind
*there's
John Spencer on the west wing. Cory Montheith on glee.
The Chief from the Carmen San Diego computer games trigger some hella nostalgia for anyone else?
She died after that show but I believe played a judge in another crime show when she died.
@@jackpoint188 She was a recurring judge on Law & Order
she did play the Judge on Adam Sandler's Anger Management movie
These were so good. Please do more like this to remember and honor. Thank you. 🦋♥️🦋
Gerry Orbach played in Chicago. He was a trained song and dance man and played Richard Gere's roll Billy Flynn. It was hard enough to see Gere in that roll but was downright flabbergasting to see Orbach. Orbach was nominated for a Tony in 1976 for his performance.
Lynne Thigpen was also the voice of Luna on Bear in the Big Blue House - my grandkids always tuned in just to hear her calm voice.
Mrs, Wolowitz: Greatest Character Not To Show Their Face of All Time Ahead of Wilson from Home Improvement
What about Carson the doorman from the Rhoda show?
@@shvat26 I believe that was Carlton your doorman.
You missed the Coach on Cheers.
I didn't realize that Captain Lassard from the Police Academy series was also on Punky Brewster. Maybe because I never watched Punky Brewster.
Actually, it was as "Colonel" Lethbridge-Stewart, in "The Web of Fear". He reprised the role, having been given a promotion, as the Brigadier in a later Troughton story, "Invasion".
John Spencer who played Leo in West Wing didn't make the cut?
You forgot the woman who played Mrs. Krabapple in the Simpsons. And I didn't realized how old Jerry Orbach (Briscoe) was until I saw him as the dad in Dirty Dancing.
Her name was Marcia Wallace
@@marvinmoore2720 from Bob Newhart too.
Coach from Cheers 🍻
Phil Hartman as Bill McNeil in News Radio. Brilliant, touching and hilarious tribute.
Though Jack Soo died during the run of Barney Miller, and they did have a retrospective episode honoring him, it was never stated explicitly that the character, Nick Yemana, died.
Great video but I thought the first actor they'd mention would be Dan Blocker. Huge show and the first time a character's death was mentioned.
Unfortunately, you missed that Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart was brought back briefly in 2014’s Death in Heaven as a cyberman.
John Spencer as Leo McGarry (sp) on The West Wing. Martin Sheen actually opened the show with the sad news. A novel approach and a great way to mourn a great man
Good video
Miss you lenny brisco
Dan Blocker, Hoss Cartwright. I also agree that "Coach" from Cheers deserved a mention.
Bill McNeal, News Radio. Hartman was murdered by his mentally ill wife and his character was killed off. Detective Barry Frost, Rizzoli & Isles. Lee Thompson Young tragically died of a drug overdose. Production was halted for a couple weeks. When new episodes resumed, the detectives get the news that Frost was killed in a car accident on his way to the precinct that morning.
He shot himself, no overdose happened
Aw you didn’t mention all in the family. The death of Edith was explained so heartbreaking by Archy.
Edith was killed off, but Jean Stapleton, her actress, was still alive at the time
She actor didn’t die!
Ralph Waite as Jackson Gibbs in NCIS
James Gandolfini, Tony soprano
I definitely was expecting to see Luke Perry on the list.
My favorite show growing up was Punky Brewster . I cried when "Henry" died.
For me, it’s Finn Hudson, a character in glee, the whole tribute is sad with the music and it felt like the actors and actresses were really singing for the actor, not the character itself as he passed away in 2013 (I think this was the year) from an overdose
Great list. Also Nancy Marchand as Livia Soprano in "The Sopranos". Best show ever imo :P
I was surprised that she wasn’t mentioned at all. They had to rewrite the third season
@@vadimzdonutube Absolutely but man, what a show. Livia was a superb character.
Huge missed opportunity here! Catherine Coulson/“The Log Lady” from Twin Peaks: The Return. She died 4 days after filming her scenes and was very ill with cancer.
I believe there will be a documentary about her, not sure when it’s coming out.
I loved Michael Conrad, he was a great actor!
I wish they would’ve mentioned Jerry Orbach more on law and order after he left
Most definitely Robin Williams. Loved him from the very beginning! Such a hit
He didn't die while filming anything. He chose to take his own life because he wasn't well.
Very cool but very freaking sad love these especially Lenny
For some reason night court was my favorite show as a kid it was on late so I always had to sneak into the living room to watch it
I'm not crying, you're crying.
😢
Did; you know: Jerry Orbach voiced Lumiere the candlestick in Beauty and the Beast.
Fred Andrews on Riverdale because Luke Perry died in real life
How can you disrespect John Ritter like this? He was the Dad on “8 simple rules” and they acknowledged his death beautifully in the show. Y’all have something against him or something? Because it’s not exactly a secret that the character died because he did
Peter Duel on Alias Smith and Jones committed suicide, and his character was replace during remainder of the show run.
He did not commit suicide. He was goofing around with set gun
@@lolawalsh9187 oh ok I thought it was ruled a suicide, anyway it was a life cut too soon. Thanks for the info
