    Thank you for this review. I’m excited to go home and try this out.

    I'm a big fan of Tokaido the original game. I really like the tactical battle set against a nice backdrop that it ends up being. It's very intense from start to finish if all of the players are taking it seriously and trying to win.

    I was surprised how much I liked this game.

    I'm happy to see Jon Stweart became a board game reviwer ❤

    Great video as usual Richard, thanks! Just a friendly reminder that Antoine co-designed 7WD with Bruno Cathala!

      yes good point. i suspect it was bruno's influence that brought some of that more direct conflict into the game! :)

    I have yet to find an honest, positive Tokaido review. Hopefully, this version will be better because it looks so cool.

    Looks like a great game for us Tokaido lovers! That said, to me it looks like I bumps up the complexity. Drafting one of 3 dice weighing the benefits of each for you and your opponent, trying to give them something, but something that also returns the remaining die that gets you something as well... I mean, not high complexity, but still seems a fair bit more to think through than moving one meeple. This will definitely be an insta buy for us, to go along with Tokaido and our pre-ordered copy of Namiji (🤞 it delivers soon)!

    Ok and based on how much you like it, is it a correct guess that tokaido duo is less cut throat than tokaido for 2 players? I’m even more of a care bear than you are fwiw.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  Před 2 lety +1

      oh much less so. tokaido had a system where you repeatedly got to make moves for the sole purpose of hampering your opponent, with no benefit for yourself. here, you're trying to balance taking what's best for you vs something that's okay for you but better for me. to me it's much less "in your face" :)

      @@rahdo I was curious about this as well. The drafting of dice is one thing, but when I saw that you could steal the special powers, I thought that might be too much negative interaction, ie the destroying what you've built type of negative interaction you tend not to like.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  Před 2 lety

      well you can only steal the special power once all 3 are owned, and by then the game is pretty close to being over. it didn't really bother us that much because of that and also because you tend to get good use out of them quickly and then use them less as you focus on other things :)

      @@rahdo that's great to hear! I was particularly curious as I tend to not like negative interaction as well, though not quite care bear level! 😁

    But am I going to like this if I despised 7 Wonders Duel?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  Před rokem

      depends why you didn't like 7wd i suppose :)

    • @Islacrusez
      @Islacrusez Před rokem

      @@rahdo a crucial question certainly. Despite winning all three games of it, 7duel is the closest I’ve ever gotten to just sweeping the whole game off the table partway through. I think my issues were the take-that aspect and just how brutal it could be sometimes. In particular removing a card from your opponent with no way to replace them, since production cards don’t come up after age 1. I was also unimpressed at the tech that allows you to reduce the price of wonders by any 2 resources, which is hilariously broken especially if you have wonders that produce resources. There was also a point when I was trying to manoeuvre to ensure I could take a specific card, but as it was under another card and my opponent refused to take that card, there was nothing I could do despite having several turns to do it in.
      While not as cutthroat as Tokaido at 2 players, duel was infuriating in a way that Tokaido was not.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  Před rokem +1

      yeah, the needless screwed that was woven in to 7wd... i just don't get it. i can say that tokaido duo doesn't do anything like that at all :) it is a very lightweight gateway style game that's clever and fairly live-and-let-live
