  • Long before Michael Keaton was Batman, he was a gifted comedian making a name for himself in big-screen comedies. Fresh off his debut in Ron Howard's hit NIGHT SHIFT, Keaton became one of the biggest comedy stars of the day thanks to a string of comedies. One of his biggest smash hits was MR. MOM. While somewhat obscure nowadays, in 1983, this movie grossed a whopping $64 million dollars (equivalent to $174 million now) and cemented Keaton as a megastar.
    It was also an important film in the career of its writer, John Hughes, who came out of the film with a three picture deal at Universal, which led to classics like SIXTEEN CANDLES, THE BREAKFAST CLUB and WEIRD SCIENCE. In our latest episode of JOHN HUGHES REVISITED, we go into the making of this smash hit, explaining how important it was for Hughes career, while also exploring the long-forgotten chapter of Keaton's career.

    As a single father of 3,, I NEVER would've thought while watching this as a teenager, that I'd grow up to actually have to be LIVING that role, of having to be a "dad" AND a "mom" (all at once)... But at least Michael Keaton taught me how to iron clothes, AND make grilled cheese and/or toast (at the same time)!!

    Edie McClurg, was ALWAYS one of my most absolute FAVORITE supporting actresses!! She was really a beautiful and heartwarming lady (whatever role she played)! Just her voice alone, has always brought a smile to my face. She has a certain "warmth" to her (innate) human character. Any fella would be lucky to have a lady in his life, that's as warm, funny, and witty as Miss Edie!! ❤️💯👍

  • @Thathorrorguy12FU
    @Thathorrorguy12FU Před rokem

    I really gotta say also that I'm very surprised that Mr Mom beat out Vacation that year. Very surprising. And talk about a great year for Mr Hughes! As the next year Sixteen Candles came out and definitely made some descent money as well at the box office. Then in 1985 his magnum opus The Breakfast Club and another great Hughes film Weird Science. All these movies are beloved. The next year was Ferris Bueller which was a box office smash. Then later on topping off the 80s was his John Candy collaborations. And one of them being imo his funniest movie to date, Trains,Planes, and Automobiles. The man could not just pump out movies at a very rapid pace. But most of the movies he pumped out were always pretty good and guaranteed definite laughs. I don't think I've heard of another director or producer who wrote at the pace of Hughes or put out such great and consistent movies as Hughes. He ruled the comedy genre for about ten years steady. And let's not forget that he wrote the Home Alone movies(at least the first two) and them two movies alone may have made him the most money that possibly all of his others put together did. And he made a lot of money off of his other films as well. He never put out a shitty movie. The guy was a machine. And very consistent. And always very funny. The only movie he put out that was garbage was Class Reunion and other than that it was full speed ahead. He was the 80s king of comedy movies. To this day I don't believe anyone has surpassed him.

    Also something else noticable about Keaton's career is that he also played the same type of character that had to do with car production in Detroit and job security in the 1986 movie Gung Ho!. Except he was playing the role of having the basically the same job. He didn't do the male female role reversal schtick. He played as a sort of embassador figure and boss who got the Japanese car company to come to their fledgling car manufacturing plant in Detroit. Where comedy and hyjinx ensues. This was a pretty funny movie as well. Which also featured some known characters and also then fairly unknown actors who are became some big names in the future. It was a pretty funny movie as well. But not near as successful as Mr Mom. So that role I like to look at as being in the same universe as Mr Mom due to Keaton pretty much having the same job title in the same industry, and located in the same area.
