      @@tirramasu7948 i feel this so hard lol but tbh one of the major takeaways i had from this video is that context is everything. jackie drew 3 pieces in an hour and a half but even she said that that’s different than drawing thumbnails, picking a color palette, etc. those are things that will benefit from you slowing down and thinking about your decisions. which tbh made me feel better about taking a long time on certain drawings - sometimes it actually is the right decision lol! but ig practicing drawing quickly will help you draw faster in the future, even on those projects that require some thought. anyway i just wanted to chime in in solidarity lol - someday we’ll get there… slowly but surely…!

      Though not quite the same. I’ve worked on storyboards in the advertising industry and have to turn out a lot drawings in a day and amend them. 8-10 drawings a day minimum. On an intense day and a year ago it was 21 drawings in about 9 hours (same day). The more you do the faster you get but obviously deadlines are a motivator too 😂

    What worked for me:
    MAKE UGLY DRAWINGS!
    I had to get over the pressure of making a nice drawing, so I started sketching with a pen on scrap pieces of paper, with the intention of throwing it out once I was done. This removed all the pressure and allowed me to draw freely. You can always scan/photograph/trace the drawing and make it pretty later if you want to, but you're developing the skill of drawing faster and more freely.

      B-but... perfectionism...

    • @milesmungo
      @milesmungo Před měsícem +17

      @@BurntSushi. Care to elaborate?
      For me I had to realize that I am not my art. My value is not first in my art. Perfectionism actually gets in the way. One particular project I literally spent 7 YEARS planning. I realized if my ugly drawing, film, website, game, etc. wasn't good or perfect, I could try again with the next one. Then I would at least have a whole bunch of decent artwork when I'm old and grey, rather than a bunch of unfulfilled cool ideas in my head.
      What's been your battle/process with perfectionism?

      @@milesmungo Honestly, I'm still in my early(?) learning phase when it comes to art, so do with this information what you will. When it comes to anything I do, I am always extremely detail-oriented. Writing projects, art, work, etc. I take my time to make sure that everything I do has detail put into it. My attention to detail has been extremely helpful in art classes, where teachers stress realism in order to help students with fundamentals, but I struggle to transfer my attention-to-detail from realism to a more stylized way of drawing.
      I know how something is supposed to look, but I'm too stuck in the boundaries of reality. I can't figure out how to draw something without all the important details or in a stylized way when I know that features that are supposed to be there.
      Additionally, I always plan on keeping my drawings as personal reminders. There has never been a time where I felt comfortable with throwing out something that I remember drawing. Sure, I may just turn the page in my sketchbook and start drawing something else, but it's still there to remind me. However, when I look back at those things, I just get discouraged because I know how bad it looks compared to other things that I've been able to draw or drew on the very next page.
      I don't know if these make sense at all, but those are my problems when it comes to drawing for fun.

      I’ve met a few professional, very successful illustrators, who design all their work on cheap printer paper. Because expensive paper makes them second guess themselves too much, for editorial illustration you might need a finished piece in two days. Their works’ quality doesn’t suffer, because they found this workflow through experience and trail and error. They would also echos Jackie’s comment about not drawing things you don’t enjoy drawing, if your portfolio is full of very clean line work and you hate drawing like that…well you’re going to be hired to draw that way if that’s what’s in your portfolio !

    As someone who has struggled with perfectionism and slow drawing, my best tip is it not really think about it and just be super loose with your drawing. Don’t spend time trying to make the perfect lines, or keep going back and changing things. I find that when I do things without much thought, my art looks better and a lot LESS FLATT. The key is to honestly just go with the flow.

    This was honestly so helpful... like istg these past months I've been trying to make some drawings of my OC's and I'm trying really hard to make them look like one piece I made like a year ago (kinda anime style with great lighting that took me like TWO MONTHS to finish) but I simply can't because to get to that same result I need patience, I need to recreate the way I painted it but just the thought of it makes me wanna leave the drawings, but then the other day I finished two drawings without all those complicated steps I took for the older drawing because I was just having fun with some doodles I scanned and then painted over in digital, they're lit some of my best artworks and I wasn't even trying, I did them in less than 2 hours each (which is quick in comparison to others) and aaaaaaaah why did it took me so long to realize I don't like taking so much time to see the final result neither?? I'm gonna follow your tips tysm for this sorry for the rant
