This was the only time in the opera the crowd would be allowed to express their appreciation to her. They took it. That ovation was for her entire career.

The poise she has during the ovation is incredible. I'm weeping from the minute she starts singing!

I was there that night and nothing can describe what it was like to sit in the midst of that outpouring of gratitude. And great as she sounds on the video, it was even more magical in real space.

Has there ever been as amazing an opera farewell as this? I can't believe she kept her composure as long as she did. There are singers just starting who don't sound as good as she did at her farewell. Astounding.

Price's upper range was so beautiful and her technical control was astonishing. This is a beautiful excerpt and yet the endless ovation is what makes this video so extraordinary IMO. She remained in character and yet she also seemed to acknowledge the audience in a subtle way.

I burst out in tears every time I see this video. To say farewell to your life’s passion of performing. I am 67 years old and I have been blessed to have made a career of my passion which is engineering.
Her composure and grace are incredible. A voice blessed by the sublime.

There is nothing in the world greater the a most deserved opera ovation. Nothing period. And Ms Price deserved nothing less.

what a thrill. I had the good fortune to hear her sing this on stage many years ago (though not at this performance). But it was perfect then, and its perfect now.

So many great singers dread the approach to the high C. Dame Eva Turner, a great AIDA of her day, spoke of its difficulty. Rosa Ponselle dropped it from her repertoire early. Leontyne makes it look effortless here.

People wrote to me that I couldn't imagine the real atmosphere of that evening. That I can't imagine the beauty of her voice, her emotions, and her overall amazing appearance. They wrote that that evening could not be forgotten. She was very emotional. People wrote that she and Radames were competing over who would cry more. She reportedly won. I've always adored her. She is number one for me and always will be. Leontyne Price is the most beautiful soprano I have ever heard.

Fact check: 30 minutes was reported as the timing of the applause after this performance.-3 minutes after this aria. The ovation of 40 or 42 minutes was (reportedly) the length of the ovation at the end of her debut on 1961.
