  • Barkha Dutt speaks to Operation Blue Star Hero Brigadier Israr Rahim Khan, on the 28th episode of our podcast 'Inside Out.'
    Brig Khan was then a lieutenant colonel and was the commanding officer of the Battalion of 10 Guards. It was the same battalion that first entered Punjab's Golden Temple to take on Bhindranwale & his associates, who had converted the revered religious place into a fortress.
    Brigadier Khan recalls how the Indian Army launched Operation Blue Star in 1984, and how being a Muslim CO in a battalion of majority of Sikhs, he led and completed the operation successfully.
    He also spoke on the ongoing India-Canada Diplomatic row and tells us how he has been threatened by Nijjar's lawyer Pannu.

    I've noticed that everyone speaks about how well equipped the terrorists were and how effective their tactics were but no one wishes to speak about the reason. The reason was that the operation from the Khalistani side was commanded not by Bhindranwale (who wouldn't have had a clue) but by a retired Major General of the Indian Army. And he was not any old Major General but the officer who headed the Mukti Bahini operations in Bangladesh from April to December 1971. He was the officer most competent and most experienced in the Indian Army in guerilla warfare, far better than Khan, Dewan, Brar, Sundarji or Vaidya. I think the Indian Army and Government made a serious underestimation.
    Of course, I understand the reluctance of the Indian Army to speak about him but without doing so, we run the risk of conducting absolutely nonsensical analysis of the operation.

    Dear Barkha, These are wonderful shows on the Khalistan movement. However, they need to be shown in Canada. The Canadian public has been kept in the dark on this topic for 40 years. I'm a retired academic who studied at JNU 1982-84, so had a front row seat when Bhindranwala was spreading terror in north India. The calls for assassination of INdian diplomats are still hanging from a Sikh gurudwara in Surrey, 25 km. from where I live. Please try to arrange a program in Canada with yourself and other guests, e.g. Ujjal Dosanjh, Terry Milewski and some Indian academics or journalists. I only learned about the assassination posters through INDIAN media. The same is true about all events relating to the killing of Nijjar and all previous events, including the Kanishka bombing. Most Canadians, I'm sure, would be as appalled as I am about the vote bank politics being played which endangers all our security.🙏🤩

    • @kannaninsevagan3415
      @kannaninsevagan3415 Před 8 měsíci +2

      No, many won't stand up and condemn the Khalistan terrorists. One out of fear that they could become targets of the terrorists, but also because many are used to "running with the hare and chasing with the hounds", they will join at any moment, the side that seems to be winning. This is common for all group extremism, like Islamists, they all the time, stand in the sidelines and watch, whether their Muslim brothers are ahead or if the authorities are in control. If the authorities are in control, suddenly, it will become a "peaceful religion", and the terrorists are just a small number of misguided extremists. If the extremists are winning, then "the peaceful religion" will now join with those forces and slaughter non-Muslims and levy tax on them. This is history.

    These are not the heroes. They’re the culprits of the enormous loss of men and prestige of the Indian army. They are the people responsible for the permanent alienation of the sikhs in the country and the creation of the Khalistan demand. There may not be much support for the Khalistan in the Indian Punjab but the sentiment will never die down. And above all they’re responsible for the death of the Prime minister Indira Gandhi. Their acts of omission and commission resulted in extreme anger among sikhs against Indira Gandhi. They promised that they would finish the operation blue star in a matter of hours without much loss of life and to the structure of the golden Temple but what happened was totally opposite. In one line Operation Bluestar was a Himalayan Blunder and in military terms a total fiasco.

    The army merely did the bidding of an inept government that created a Frankenstein by playing politics, and then lost control of him. A govt that was asleep at the wheel as the Frankenstein fortified the holy temple and armed it to the teeth. My salute to the brave soldiers who helped liberate the temple, restraining themselves even as the terrorists desecrated it and waged a no holds barred war upon them. And yet they want to kill those brave soldiers who, as a professional army, were merely obeying orders as they are under oath to do. People like Pannu who seek the lives of such brave soldiers are irrational and nothing short of terrorists of the worst kind.

    The army did what it was ordered to do. The key question is - could the terrorists not have been starved out by cutting off food supply indefinitely? Instead of storming in and finishing it in a hurry. It's more.of a political decision question.secondly if they had to strom, could it not have been tasked exclusively to Punjab regiment? So there would not be any religious conflict aftermath.

    Jatt Sikhs still see you as a Pajeet. It’s a racist ideology based on having fairer skin. Someone who’s ancestors were Hindu and converted along the way makes no difference to them.

    The operation Blue star may be a matter of pride for some but for the Sikhs it is an emotive issue. The Darbar Sahib complex is the holiest place for the Sikhs. It was brought down by our own govt in 1984. And it was not for the first time that the Darbar Sahib complex was razed to the ground. The invaders from Kabul with likes of Ahmad Shah Abdali destroyed the Darbar Sahib complex an umpteen times in the past. But we rebuilt it from the scratch. This time also we again built it. The Sikhs have moved on since then, forgiven the ones who razed it but never to forget. What purpose does it serve to bring the ghosts out of the graves now. Please don't make the Sikhs easy practice punching bags. Our honour is not a matter of anyone's discretion.

      Thank god, there is somebody sane enough to understand in the comment section that this operation was a blunder, this operation should never have happened in the way it had happened. All bunch of ehsan faramosh idiots commenting and praising this man and barkha dutt in the comment section, afterall two army commandos had rejected the idea of storming the Golden Temple, those Army commandos are praise able. How much Sikhs & Sikh Guru Sahibs have done for this Country, sadly it went in vain.
