    Both are made by Midland. However, the Albrecht AE 2990 AFS has a very interesting history as I believe the Cherokee AH-100 was the great granddaddy of many reissues of this radio under several different names. Both units are based off a modular design that first came out in 1995. Cobra used it as well for their 45 WXST model.

      Fully agree, I have feeling that roots of this radio go into HAM 10M radio with software lock to CB band.

    Awesome comparison. I never expected such a great difference between the two radios!!! But I know now why the ALBRECHT is so much more expensive!

    • @ElectronicNoobBlog
      @ElectronicNoobBlog  Před 4 lety +4

      Exactly, i was searching YT for test like this and I had to buy radio "blind" Reviews was totally unbiased - some people love it some hate it but without real test. Does it perform worst than full size CB - for sure, but for hand operated - beat Alan 42 and this is most important. Real difference is on SSB, it's in reality doubling range but I can't record it. After covid if I figure out how to set dual watch on FT-817 I can do cross compare of two modes SSB / FM.

    • @tulenik71
      @tulenik71 Před 4 lety +2

      and what if Alan only has better receiver? :)
      but honestly I only heard complaints against Albrecht audio quality (specifically, on SSB)

    • @rolexr
      @rolexr Před 4 lety +2

      tulenik71 …OK that‘s an aspect. That weak SSB quality was with the older devices, they modified
      that already. Thatˋs what I have heard 🤔

    • @ElectronicNoobBlog
      @ElectronicNoobBlog  Před 4 lety +3

      @@tulenik71 On receiving end i got monitored by Yaesu FT-817 i was not testing on Alan 42, I do not have equipment to measure sensitivity of radios like Marconi 2955B - for now it's outside my price tag. I might go back to this topic if more lab go toward DMR and will selling analog measurement devices cheaper.
      AE2990 - opinion that it's bad - yes i don't like that CLARIFIER do not have click when it's on 0 offset - it's problematic when trying receive SSTV - for human voice You tune it manually to get pith is most enjoying to listen but on SSTV i have trouble adjusting it - so Yes it's a bummer. But to be honest i would ask people who write negative opinion (with i believe is valid) - against what they compare - to get better picture. So fare i don't k now about any other handheld with SSB modes, limited size will always mean that You have find compromise - coils, filters, TXCO - how smaller than can be for HF - this is question. Compare full size radio to that compressed factor and saying "it's bad" when there is really no better options is I believe wrong opinion. I carry AE2990 for trips because i don't want break law by TX-ing using amature radio equipment like FT-817 on CB band (i use often FT-817 for monitoring receiving with signalink to decode sstv on 27.700 or record 27.555) - but that's me - im not going to police anyone - FT-817 with txco will beat AE2990 but it's at least 3 times bigger - so real answer would be what fit better Your scenario than simply say it's sound worst than full size base / mobile radio.

      Sage advice...buying the Alan 42 DS now will only further delay your acquisition of the Albrecht unit. Just save up for the Albrecht as AM/FM you'll find is pretty useless and not much, if any, traffic. You need the SSB modes otherwise it's a waste of money.

      Thanks for comment, overall distance was about 5km but please understand that distance is not important here, measuring how far You can reach is good in desert, big empty space where You can walk and find point when it stops. Here inside woods - on one time I was hidden behind hill slope, another time I was exposed. Going further I was getting better line of sight conditions. Ravine had worst technical conditions but it was closer than last point so it's really bad judge for anything.

      @@weld3z You welcome, going back to Your question, I would never use CB for that reason, in city You will get lot of interference it will start hissing in random moments, You will constantly adjust squelch, You will hear other people talking. If solar conditions will be right, You get lot of traffic from people around world, You won't reach 2km person, but You can talk with someone on other part of globe... Also I doubt with 2 miles, while moving from handheld.
      In my opinion best (license free) would be something form dPMR446, or any other digital radio (if licensing is not issue like DMR) - You set color code (like group ID) and You will gear only valid traffic for that group - everything else will be muted. While walking in city i got 2 miles no problem between two digital handhelds.

    Hey loved this video and really helpful and now I'm interested in getting a clansman ground spike antenna! Am I correct in thinking you need 5 elements (antenna sections) for this to work on 11m cb radio?

    • @ElectronicNoobBlog
      @ElectronicNoobBlog  Před 4 lety +1

      I would say YES but it will work also using 4 sections.
      On 5 elements on 27mhz SWR is close to 1.2 - on 4 if i recall like 1.6 - so still perfectly usable - well bellow 2.
      Please do keep in mind that this antenna have built in matching circuitry so it never will be perfect antenna and i believe some of RF are wasted as heat. That low SWR does not mean 100% is being converted into usable RF.
      It's my 100% choice for upper HF if there are no trees to hang dipole, it's self contained in bag and You can deploy it anywhere in seconds!
      If You can get it in good price - fully recommend - it's so easy You can train someone in no-time to use it as emergency antenna. Also included coax is very good ( folda-ble friendly - so this itself i would call good selling point)

      @@maxstermusic You welcome, they should have equal overall length, if You have shorter elements - You should get twice of them. 1 long element = 2 smaller. They will work same - it's up to You to decide - If You carry inside backpack then I would go with smaller so it will be more easier to fit. I don't see way they can perform better or worst so it's only way of carrying.

      You use SSB for long range communication it allow not only go much larger distance but allow multiple people talking over same time on same frequency allocation (as long they have slightly different voice) since SSB is not canceling background hiss (no carrier). FM is used for short range communication and there is carrier that is blanking background hiss if another person would transmitter their carrier would fight to cancel other traffic.
