Hardmoors Trail Series - Roseberry Topping Marathon. 30 Miles, below freezing in snow and ice!

- My first Hardmoors race was a great one! One I'll remember that's for sure! I can't recall why I picked December to run my first Hardmoors race... it seemed a good idea at the time. Then I started to question my life choices as temperatures dipped but as there was no rain it turned out to be the best decision ever! A magical day running on the Cleveland Way with sparking snow and frozen hair and eyelashes! Definitely an experience.
Roseberry Topping was hard... TWICE but rewarding at the top. My goal was to stay upright and get round while enjoying the day. I would definitely come back for more if these races were closer as it was an awesome day out on beautiful trails. Incredible support from what must have been VERY cold marshals!
Whatever the weather just get out there and your day might surprise you!
Happy running,
Nicola :)
Very atmospheric and seasonal run Nicola. "Do we have to go down there? Jesus!" is the quote of the video, took the words out of my mouth. Thanks for lots of memorable videos in 2022
🤣🤣🤣 Yeah I was definitely not expecting that to be the route... I think that comes across 😂 Thanks for your lovely comments in 2022 😃🙃
Your channel is my best find in 2022 on CZcams.
That's the nicest thing someone's said to me in 2022 🤗
Wow at first I thought you were mad, then it looked glorious and then it looked cold and horrible again but then you went above clouds - amazing! Well done and thank you for sharing.
Ooh that section above the clouds was like "these are the moments we live for". Just unbelievably beautiful. Really makes you appreciate the beauty of the world 😍 there were moments early on when I felt like I was mad too 🤣
Oh the traffic light is making me all red , you madam , are hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
Lol... It was 😂🔴🔴🔴
Merry Christmas Nicola and Poppy 🎄🎅 This one looked a really cold horrible one. Hardcore to the end. 😁. Thank you for sharing all your adventures this past year. They e been a pleasure to watch. Here’s to 2023 and more adventures.
Cheers Tony 😃 it was hard but it was anything but horrible, it was stunningly beautiful. Hard going though but worth it for those moments above the clouds 😍😍😍 Here's to 2023 😃🏃♀️
Loved watching this, seeing people I know, seeing the full route (as I only do the half), and extra special as I missed it this year due to both illness and injury.
There's always next year ❤️❤️❤️ I'm sorry you couldn't run though 😩
Didn't imagine the butt-sliding down the hill😄, you didn't either! There is a trail series starting on Jan 15th and another trail run on Feb 19 and I am thinking about doing them. I am a baby runner so I will just do the 10Ks but we all start somewhere! Seeing you on your parkruns and ultras is really inspiring and I wouldn't be so keen to try them now if I haven't seen your awesome videos! You have such beautiful scenery there and you always make the most of every race no matter what conditions. Thank you so much for making running so fun and inspiring!
Awwww this is so lovely! Thank you so much. I'm so happy you're going to get out there and trail run and I hope you have some amazing experiences 😃 maybe not sliding down hills on your butt but 🤷🏻♀️🤣 thanks again for writing such a lovely comment 🤗
@@NicolaRuns Thank you for your kind response! I am looking forward to the adventure (even potential butt-slides 😄) and seeing more of your adventures as well! Hope you and the family have a very Happy New Year and that 2023 will have lots of awesome races and trips for you!
@@audgester thank you 🤗 I've started planning a few cool adventures 😃 Here's to 2023 and adventures that keep life exciting! 😃
@@NicolaRuns cheers!😊
Wow what brutal conditions! Well done you! I absolutely love Roseberry Topping but would not fancy going up in those conditions! Stunning when you went above the clouds though! Great video x
Thank you 🤗 it was definitely tough but also a great adventure! 😃 And all the hard work was worth it for those bits above the clouds. It was absolutely breathtaking up there! 😍
Amazing view from the top 👌
The entire day was worth it just for that 😍😍😍
Oh yikes on the weather. Pretty, but not conditions to push for a time in. Looks like a fun if tough time though.
14:06 - Sign behind the marshall on the left: "If you quit now you could beat the 10K runners back to the cake!" - That made me lol.
15:08 - Can't read it all behind the marshalls legs, but looks like a "Too late, all the cake has been eaten by the 10K runners" follow up sign too :)
Gonna have to watch back to read all the signs XD
Their signs are BRILLIANT! They put a 20 mile marker at mile 26 which made me really laugh. Properly cheeky signs all the way around 🤣
Looked beautiful out there Nicola, tough conditions but what a race to be part of!
It was AWESOME! Definitely not a PB day but it was just beautiful. Tough but brilliant! 😃
Totally random, i was just talking about this race with a friend and saw this video! It was the same year i ran the race! So many great memories, including incicles on my knees, but coming out over the clouds made my day! Wish I'd known you were running in the same race, could have said hi! 😁
It was awesome above the clouds wasn't it! There was someone else filming on the day I think but I can't for the life of me remember who it was! Awesome race but SO cold! ❄️😂
@@NicolaRuns haha so true! Although the same area that was above the clouds looks incredible in late summer when the heather is out! I'll keep an eye out for your name on the start lists now and come say hi! 🙂 And I'll hopefully see more videos of my local area on your channel 😁
@@Chris.crooks ooh it sounds awesome with the heather 😍😍😍😃
@@NicolaRuns sounds like a great excuse to visit for a adventure! 😁
What an amazing adventure, a bit jealous of that one, those cloud inversions on top of the world xxx just stunning xx
It was awesome! It made all of the cold, hard, technical bits worth it. I was so happy up there above the clouds 😍😍😍
Having run up Roseberry Topping in August 2019 I can tell you it's no easier going down the way you did, well close, in the summer too! Great looking video once that mist cleared, well run you 👍
Thanks Tony, yeah my reaction when I knew we were going down there?! 🤣 I was not impressed 😂😂😂 it was an awesome day on the trails though. I absolutely loved it! 😃
Legend 🥰
This was such an awesome race but eek it was a bit scary up Roseberry Topping! 😱 I loved it though 😃 Miss you Xx
Roseberry Topping looking like some epic high mountain peak in those conditions!
It was looking mighty impressive wasn't it?! As beautiful as it was imposing - it was a great day for it 😍
Fabulous effort Nicola and happy Christmas ❤🎉
Thank you 🤗 and Merry Christmas to you too 😃🎄⛄
Amazing run, completely mad bonkers as well 😂. Great filming in such slippery conditions 👍
Thanks, it was awesome! I loved it 😃 Definitely a tough one but totally worth it 😊
Classic . Ho Ho Ho I’m Santa
🤣 Good old Santa! He was a legend when we were on our way back up! Kept us all safe and literally pulled us up the last icy but. What a guy 💪🎅
No falls, head in the right direction! Hope you had a good Christmas x
Thanks, Christmas was great thank you... Hope yours was too. I did just fall on black ice this morning so it's a return to bleeding knees but lol, nowhere near as bad as in that marathon! 🤦🏻♀️🤣🤕🙃
Wow - that looked amazing 😊 well done for not falling over 👍😂
I know right... What an achievement?! 🤣 Not falling over is always a bonus... I did however fall on black ice this morning and currently have a jarred back and bleeding knee 🤦🏻♀️😂
@@NicolaRuns oh no 🙈 Hope it heels soon! No ice here…just lots of puddles
@@bensmith6633 puddles sound a lot safer 🤣
Your channel is so addictive, mind you that's probably all down to you 👋
What a lovely thing to say! 🤗 TBF I am always happy when I'm running but I just love it! 😃😃😃
Super interesting ultra. How did you manage to film it all the way through? Does your hand get cold, or are go pros lighter to hold than a phone? I spotted a few people from our area who I know and run with sometimes. Congratulations, Nicola.
Oh that's cool you spotted people you know 😃 I only film bits, not all the time and I've got a DJI pocket 2 which is mini and loads lighter than my phone. Depending on what I'm doing I can sometimes keep gloves on but this day was so cold I needed mittens so I had to take them off to film. Great race though and awesome to run on new trails 😃
Very inspiring, makes me wonder of I could run the lyke wake walk?
Ooh cool what's that? Sounds like it would be beautiful 😍
@@NicolaRuns Hi Nicola
The lyke wake walk is from Osmotherly to ravenscar across the north York Moors.
It's about 40 miles.
How long did it take you to get up to long distance running ability?
I have been told that iam being unrealistic, that I would not be able to complete this route?
Is time,pace important to you?
@@alanrobinson2229 depends on the race, sometimes I'm after a time or a win or series points and sometimes I couldn't care less and the longer it takes the more I enjoy it! It took over 5 years of running for me to seriously step up in distance but I've been running for over 12 years now and know my body and any niggles well. That's the main thing that catches people out... Not listening to their bodies so they get injured. I also get sports massages if I feel I need them but it can take a while to learn what it is you need 🙃 40 miles is totally achievable, you just need to train and take it slowly. Don't let anyone else kill your dream 💪
@@NicolaRuns Right Nicola, iam setting it as my goal.
So I will step up in a few mnth, not years????
Thanks for positive encouragement,I will do it.
Lol,already stepped up from 5k to 6k,then another 3 in afternoon yesterday.I will build my distance and time running over next 2/3 months and see if Iam getting close to giving it a go.
Object is to complete it and I like it when you walk up hills rather than trying to run.👍
PS
I give credit to you,it was watching your vids that got me running in first place(via A Burns).
Thank you for the inspiration ❤️
@@alanrobinson2229 just listen to your body and remember that with distance that fuelling and walking is part of the journey. Go from your current fitness and start building up. See how it goes and how you feel. Be prepared to change the time goal in order to look after yourself as your body adapts to the distance so that you don't get injured. And don't forget that eating well and sleep are super important too 😃 good luck 🤗
Done Roseberry many times, last time in gale force winds but we walk it!!!! Not far from us in Stockton, just out of curiosity do you live around here or Yorkshire dales?
I'm North Leeds so this was a treck for me but it was so wonderful to run some new trails, I loved it! Not my first time up Roseberry though, it's gorgeous up there isn't it?! 😍
Sure is, altho first time I did it, there was a fence at the bottom, I climbed over and the post went up my jacket, leaving me swinging in the air, hubby was tres amused!llll🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@nolavout9094 oh my goodness that's brilliant! 🤣
He could have left me there all day 🤣🤣🤣🤣😫
That did not look easy but fair play you did it . Well done . They had Dr Pepper there and you didnt take any ??? Controversial 😮😮I have to go hunting for a bottle when i want one , hard to find lol
Thanks but we might fall out now... Dr Pepper is evil! 🤢 I wouldn't drink it if you paid me 🤣 but actually... It just means we'd be good running buddies! I'll drink the coke and you can have the Dr Pepper 😃
@@NicolaRuns lol I started drinking it when I lived in Canada years ago , I only drink it a couple of times a year , prefer cherry Coke and that's even harder to find , ha ha , thanks again for all the fun videos , always cheer me up 👍👍
@@bren70ssss94 awww pleased they cheer you up 😃 you can keep cherry Coke too 🤣 I'm not a fan... Fanta mixed with coke is delicious though! Xxx
@@NicolaRuns Oh dear God 🤢🤢😂😂
@@bren70ssss94 😂😂😂
7:43 Jesus! What is that?! 😂
Lol 🤣 I couldn't believe we had to go down there! 😱
'promosm'
What does this mean?
How u can run and talk at the same time is beyond me!!!!!!
Practice 😃 and slowing down. I struggle if I'm running much faster 🙃
You should have worn a hat!!!!
I get so hot when I'm running! It's so hard to run in a hat, it makes me too sweaty. I should have worn a headband though as my ears would have liked that but if you look I've plaited my hair over the tops of my ears which helps loads 😃
