The Electrical industry is indeed vast and diverse!.. I am 56 nearly, passed my JIB AM1, C&G 236 part 1 & 2, in 1994, 16th edition, 17th edition Amd 3, and had a job for 19 years working in a factory after that, resting on my laurels, my company wouldn't invest in my training, i got stuck in a rut, not through choice, I diversified by learning other stuff such as EXEE explosion proof systems, and Electronics, CCTV, Networking, and whatever way the work I did was being driven towards, you had to adapt or someone else would take your place. I loved my job (mostly) but 16 years on, i got made redundant and found myself retraining, and going self employed doing domestic work, but the training never stops, you must keep developing your skills, and the moment that stops is the moment you need to re-evaluate your career. Learn, adapt, and make money, however, time takes it's toll on your body, and I am at a point of re-evaluating my career yet again due to covid-19 (no i don't have it thank god) and the way things are going to pan out. Great advice though, and life is what you make it!..put down your iPads, and get learning! knowledge is power kids! ;-) push yourself...learn learn learn! your employers only want you to know so much, go above and beyond that and you will always be ahead of the pack.

Well said mate. You need to always ask yourself, "can someone else do my job" if the answer is yes and if many can then you are in trouble. You need to make yourself unique. You dead right. Companies prefer to keep you dumb and pay you nothing. Unless they are lucky enough to find some knowledgeable but without papers then it's even better. Ultimately you sharpen your skills that you a cut above the rest and then you go on your own. That's it

Jay Attwell We always required the latest regs qualification in order to obtain the JIB gold card. So yes you will need to undertake the current BS7671.

Either a level 3 in electrical installation which is what I got then u would need to do a portfolio and ur am2 exam or you could an apprenticeship

Sorry to put you right on these am2 were this private company comes to site and falsely take photos of work that the apprentice is supposed have carried out,I've also worked for small JIB companies who I've seen send out employees who have not yet passed the am2 but has been sent on jobs on their own umongst the general public with live equipment around so sorry as a sparks of 50 years this industry is in a shocking state,as for your trainies when they pass their am2 they will have choices either work for a small company and get whipped for 40 a week and being run around and not even get JIB wages or become a suby who can get the elbow at a minutes notice,I think the 70s and 80s were the best time in this industry because today frankly the industry is in a poor state
