  • GARY WILSON was hailed for his "sporting" gesture during his match with Ronnie O'Sullivan. While competing in the semi-final of the World Tour Championship in Manchester, O'Sullivan had a foul shot called against him.
Referee Paul Collier deemed O'Sullivan, 48, to have done a push shot - a shot when the cue ball and object ball are touching while a players cue is also touching the cue ball - as he potted the blue ball.
It came when the Rocket was still level at 5-5 with Wilson in the 11th frame in the best of 19 match and saw Wilson awarded five extra points.
Following the judgement, O'Sullivan and Wilson could be seen conversing over the table.

Usually the balls would need to be less than 1 mm apart for a double hit push shot foul to be a worry. When a leather qtip hits the qball the tip remains in contact with the qball for a distance of 8 times the compression of the leather. The softer the qtip then the wider the gap needed between the balls.
But if u aim very thickly on the objectball then u can get a double hit foul even if there is a very wide gap between the balls.
O'Sullivan's shot was not even close to being a foul of any kind, ie not a push (type 1), not a push (type 2), & not a double hit.

      (1) We dont know whether the ref reckoned it was a double hit (qtip hits qball twice or more).
      (2) Or whether it was the old fashioned push (qtip stays in touch with qball for too long & too far).
      (3) Or whether it was the new fashioned push (qtip is in touch with qball when qball is in touch with object ball)(is this called a push in the rules?).
Except that we know that it was supposed to be (3), which it was not.
For sure we can get an accidental double hit with the balls a long way apart. But we can also get a nice clean screw back with the balls very close together. Here we might need to aim off center on the object ball, & use a bit of inside english with the screw (& of course use a circumcized follow throo).

Ah ok sorry, i thort that u were referring to the dist apart in Ronnie's actual shot.
I think that the rules of billiards allow a push shot (type 3 above) if u play a fine edge of the OB. Not sure about snooker.
Re the dist apart. I can play a fullball follow throo loozer off the red (red sitting on theSpot), if my qball is at least 10mm clear of red (ie i can play a 6shot here).

That's not what the foul was for. The ref felt that after Ronnie played the shot, his cue tip hadn't yet left the white ball before the white ball came into contact with the blue. So for a brief second the cue tip, the white ball and the blue were all connected. That is what a push shot is, and the foul was awarded for that.

The call from the Ref has to be accepted at the end of the day like those huge men accept it in Rugby and take it. We do not want VAR in any other sport because we know what it has done to football because of the different or even corrupt calls when watched in slow motion. While I admire Wilson for his intention on this he is just undermining the Ref. Suck it up and let the Ref go to bed at night thinking he did the best he could have.

Great call, with the left hand side on and proximity of the balls, it looked like it 'could be'... however the ref called it, he stuck by his guns (as he should do), fair play, you can't start discussing rules with officials, they already move the balls if the players aren't happy when replaced when a miss is called (even if its correct on the screen). Referee was said he "was sure" and Gary said he "he didn't think it was", so GW wasnt even sure.. Trying to influence a result/decision could be construed as cheating/fixing. Players/People may think he's being genuine, but rules are rules. Be anarchy if ref changed his mind.
