Wrong on my last job. When I was stationed in the Middle East, I ate a lot of the same junk food that I had in America, yet I lost 12 lb. There's no excuse why a nation like America with the average person works out at least 3 days a week yet still averages about 20 lb overweight. Is the genetically processed food?

I lived there back in the nineties. The root cause is the abandonment of the traditional diet; taro, fish, vegetables and the introduction of corned beef, fast food, junk food and crap. I lived in Tonga too: same problem.

It’s not the food, it’s the consumption of such food that is the problem.
Fast food and junk food is not bad per se, it just depends on how much you consume these foods on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis.
An example, is what we Tongans term as Kai Pola or other festival celebrations that we have in tonga, birthdays, funerals, village days etc
To delineate personal responsibility to things like “colonisers and colonisation” is in my opinion lazy. You are personally responsible for the food you consume, you are also personally responsible of what you don’t consume. You make the choice of choosing the food you eat. If choose to eat fast food and junk food more often than you choose to eat healthier food, in this case traditional food, then the consequences of your choices will ultimately bear upon you.
We live in a society and in times where we have access to more knowledge and study behind foods that are beneficial and detrimental to our health and ultimately our bodies.
I don’t think there are any fast-food restaurants in tonga (Kfc, Maccas, hungry jacks/Burger King, dominoes, Pizza Hut, etc) but I do know there are restaurants in tonga that do sell and serve fast-food and junk food meals. However, it is expensive and rarely an everyday consumption type of delicacy.
This was such an insightful video though, I’m open to have my opinions challenged 🙌🏽

@@giancarlo2008 I sort of agree. I used to work for Futa Helu back in the early 90's (RIP) and used to attend the occasional Sunday feast after he and Keloni came back from church (that was Tonga, but Samoa was the same).
But let's not kid ourselves here: there's a huge nutritional difference between Umu food and a pile of grease served up late at night out of some mobile food stall.
I agree that self-control plays a part, but for a nation used to nutritious food, suddenly confronted with highly addictive fat and sugar, the outcome is fairly obvious. Exactly the same thing happened in the US.

    • @giancarlo2008
      @giancarlo2008 Před 2 lety

@@billparrish9200 so what you’re saying is … The people who are obese today or who “fat” when measured by societal standards, are obese and fat because they where given sugar and fat food?
If that’s the point you’re raising here, I’m not sure on whether I agree with you on this point. Purely on the following facts:
      1. Access of information: regarding almost every food there is on the market. There is information available and accessible publicly to everyone about food that is nutritional and beneficial for you and food that is unhealthy and detrimental for you.
Consumption: as I previously mentioned, consumption is there issue here. Like you said you’ve witnessed the Sunday after church feeds and you know how stacked and packed the tables be when Sunday feeds are on.
Exercise: there is not much push to encourage and motivate people to get up and get active. Now, I’ve seen a growing influence of people trying to encourage Tongans to get up and get active. But you can only do so much. Like the saying goes, you can lead an animal to water but you can’t force it to drink.
In my opinion, and I am open to being corrected, obesity is a combination of three things amongst many others … discipline and control.
If you can’t discipline yourself to watch what you eat, you won’t be able to control how much consume.
If you consume more than you exercise, than you will see the results from the type of food you’ve consumed.

Colonizers?? Sounds like a load of BS. I'm Haitian American. Haiti was once colonized by the French. Haitian cuisine is a mixture of African, French, Taino Indian, and Arabic dishes. Haitian food tends to be very high in carbohydrates and sodium. Rice and starchy plantains are the most popular dishes in Haitian culture. Plus Haitians don't recognize portion control. Haitian parents will give an 8 yr old portion sizes meant for a 250lbs male adult. Haitians will tell a skinny person that they need to eat and put on weight. When that person gets fat then they mock them for being fat. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CULTURE!!!!!
Haitians and Haitian Americans end up dealing with gout, circulation problems, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, stroke, and heart attack due to the unhealthy Haitian cuisine that needs SEVERE MODIFICATIONS!!! However, talk to some Haitians about improving the cuisine to make it more healthy, they don't want to hear it. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CULTURE!!!!!
I came from a family where we pretty well educated and health conscious. I have family members with diabetes, hypertension, cancer and other issues. So we always limited our fast food intake. However, we didn't learn till later on that all that rice, starchy plantains, and spaghetti in Haitian cuisine wasn't healthy for us. So we had to make adjustments. We had to learn to make Haitian cuisine, low carb. Now I will admit that I have gotten sloppy and cheated on my nutrition. That's how I ended up with prediabetes again. I BLAME MYSELF FOR HAVING NO DISCIPLINE AND SELF CONTROL!!!! Now I have to work on getting my blood sugar back to normal levels.
We as non-whites can't keep blaming European colonization for our health situations. White people didn't make me eat french fries, bread, pizza, rice, pasta, and gummy bears. I knew my family genetics, but I STILL CHOSE to indulge anyways. So Samoans and other Polynesians have to know that their food choices is killing them. Samoans that choose to break from the unhealthy mindset and eat more natural healthy foods, bravo for them. Samoans seeing the obesity, hypertension, and diabetes all around them, that still choose to indulge in the foods that's making them sick. They're digging their own graves.

Not all Samoans are fat. Like any other race in the world. Things are not the same these days, compare to the Samoans in the past. We no longer be cutting down trees to carve canoes, like in the past, every family got to have a canoe some families have 3 or more. We also no longer be building faleo'o, faletele with all the materials we gather like woods (pou, o aso), roof materials, (su'ilau), weaving blinds (pola) floormat (aupolapola to papalaufala to falalili'i) we no longer be hunting wild boars. as life gets easier each day, and with less and less activities. The easy to get food, the all day watching tv, the more time on our phones, the softer your beds is, with the cars, even going for few yards, we nowadays prefer driving there than walking. This are some of the reasons why we are FAT. "E lelei le lapo'a malosi, ae leaga le puta ma'i" .

High caloric and high fatty foods are okay in moderation. Fatty cuts are fine in moderation. Carbs like taro are healthy and so are the rest of the root crops. Chinese people use a big portion of lard in their stir-fries yet, they're skinny. I think the issue is proportion. We all eat more portions than before.
My husband and I grew up skinny since we ate mostly organic food and were given 3 solid meals a day. Snacks were a small packet of chips or 3 pieces of biscuits with water.
Fast forward years later, our diet has changed. We have more options now, we snack all throughout the day ( chocolates, cakes, softdrinks, etc) and our meal proportions are bigger. My 10-year-old is 52kg and eats constantly. Whereas when I came to Oz, I was only 21 and weighed 41kg.

    Why are we fat?
First our body & muscle mass is larger so more for fat to cling too.
Pre colonisation on the Islands our diet was predominantly plant based with fish and sea food added to the variety of our simple foods.
Meat such as chicken and pork was a luxury not a daily thing.
Also our daily lives where there was more physical activity.
But since Western food choices arrived so did high sugar carb content in drinks, rice, canned food. The poor quality meat with high fat content exported to Samoa (corn beef, salted beef, beef flaps etc) our diet completely changed.
In the West it's worse. Though individual choices has alot to do with it. As does economics. Cheap food is fattening.

I lived with a Somoan Family, my friend Alvin was 7 Ft tall, thin but very wirery-strong. His father was the head of the American Samoan congregational church, which I attended, and saying Besse. One of the big reasons Symonne people are big is because of the taro root, which is high in hormones! That’s why they are one of the strongest race of people in the world. My friend would break a redwood fence pole with The edge of his hand, and I heard a swish, it turned into fibers like a broom! Such massive power. I was also friends with Rashiki The famous WWE Samoan wrestler. My brothers was friends of Matavia ”Superfly Snooka” Who is related to the rock Dwayne Johnson. I speak Samoan, and they invited me into their culture, I shared my Polynesian/Chinese kung fu system “Paka”, I use kindness and psychology, and taught them that they were so big and strong. They did not need to be angry and fight a lot because it was like fighting children, with kung fu, you don’t have to fight & you can remain humble. You’re a very pretty lady, don’t take things personal, I’m Basque, French, Spanish, and have tan skin and I’ve been through a lot of racial discrimination also. You just have to consider The source, there will always be ignorant people, and we have to pray for them because they do not know who we are! As far as I am concerned, you’re beautiful.

Or when Samoan students were penalised for speaking Samoan in schools? Wait maybe it was when the Samoans were brainwashed into thinking their cultural traditions were evil and then brainwashed with Christianity?

  • @defjungleofficial

It really doesn't matter what you eat...are you active enough? How big are the portions at a time? We need to move past the idea that "certain foods" are the enemy and look more towards the fact that it's all food...food has changed in a very big way in recent times but also, food portions and lack of activity could result in obesity. You can eat a donut or a couple of donuts a day, a big bowl of chili...but the culprit is when you let your food "sit"...no, don't let it sit and "digest"...get moving right away ( you don't have to do heavy weightlifting or exercises) but you do have to move your body (like going for a walk) never let your food settle. Now, there are other ways to help food digest and that's eating a few pieces of fruit like watermelon or some kind of melon or citrus fruit after a big meal or any meal and that speeds up digestion (I knew a Cambodian woman who would always eat fruit after quite of few servings of say "Chinese" food...and she just ate a few pieces of fruit and man she went back up to the buffet to get more...)I guess "yes" it does give you more room, but is that really necessary? Eat and be done..."get moving". That's the "not so secret" of keeping weight off.

Ngl. Aren't there actual studies out there that suggests Samoan's retrain fat easier based on their DNA?
Which can make sense from an evaluationary perspective. Mainly because the Islands were not big enough for large cattle farming. People who were able to retain energy reserves (fat) easier were more likely to survive and pass on genes.
Also Samoans have a pretty rich warrior culture where tribal fighting were not uncommon, so being bigger and stronger meant you were also more likely to survive.
I reckon modern lifestyles and modern diet just play against Samoan genes, because there are definitely depictions of thin tribal Samoans, like most deceptions of tribal humans. But it's really apparent that even athletic Samoans are naturally husky and if they are ripped, they are still huge.
I also most Samoans I noticed don't look unhealthy, hell a lot I seen actually look strong and capable.

Like you said "WE accepted it and WE took it on" ... western food has also been introduced in China, Japan, India, Russia, Phillipines ...The Whole World... The problem isn't just WHAT we are eating... It's HOW MUCH we are eating.
I love our people, our culture etc which is why I find this offensive as it portrays us as ignorant people who do not research for ourselves but will put anything in our mouth if a palagi says it's good for us.
When the Japanese government realized western food was creating an obesity problem they introduced legislation and regulations to control western food outlets and introduced programs in schools to teach children about healthy food choices.
Whether you are Samoan or not, if you are fat it is not because someone is "hammering" the idea that western food is good... It's because you're eating too much and not exercising enough.
I'm not being negative, I just think this mentality is biased and unhealthy.

    • @MeasinaSamoa
      @MeasinaSamoa  Před 3 lety +5

I would never want to portray our Samoan people as being ignorant. The face that we would not work plantations when colonisers came and the fact that we were the first to become independent in the Pacific shows that we are a strong willed, prideful and intelligent people. The change that was made when colonisers arrived was a lack in value for our indigenous knowledge. This value moved to wanting what we didn't have, to becoming accustomed and in a way addicted to fatty, sugar filled foods. When we move overseas that value is kept in fatty foods that remind us of home. Sugary foods that make us feel like we are better than we were before. It is completely unhealthy and it is something that needs to be changed. We can't change a mindset of people if we don't first acknowledge that it is there.
