The hardwood floors we put in our last home are up to $8 a square foot thanks to inflation. Yikes! 😬 But good news!! If you are willing to put in a little extra work and do it yourself, you can get 3/4 inch real hardwood oak flooring from @LL Flooring for a little over $2 a square foot! It's called utility oak or cabin grade oak. It's unfinished and has some imperfections. You will need to fill in any imperfections/knots with epoxy and then sand and stain after install. If you are willing to get your hands dirty and do some extra work, you can save thousands with this DIY trick!

Gorgeous!! I noticed wrinkles in your rug. I have a ruggable and I had some problems vacuuming it until I rolled it up and made sure I pressed everywhere as I j rolled it so the Velcro was stuck good and then walking on it for a few days it’s vacuumed well 👌🏼

@@JAMIEANDSARAH Thank you! I went with a stone composite-core, cork backed LVP throughout, and I love it. Warm white kitchen cabinets, pure white quartz counters (It’s a small 1000sf ground floor flat). Came with a zero clearance wood burning fireplace; I’m going to put a Lopi Answer insert in for real heat in the winter. I put wall mounted modern vanities in both teenie bathrooms. Upgraded to a lux whirlpool tub in one bathroom. Next up is epoxying the single car, detached garage floor. I ordered the epoxy online so I could get a cream colored floor with ivory, brown, and copper metallic chips. Garage walls are Swiss Coffee. It looks bright and clean (the garage has no windows).
Next year, after the fireplace, I’ll be replacing all the windows, replacing the 2nd shower, and maybe putting reclaimed Doug fir paneling (sourced from a torn down granary), in the dining nook.
It’s my little jewel box and I love it.
I don’t have a clear idea of what millwork (if any) I want to add, but eventually the right design will make itself clear. I’ll be building a custom wood frame with sliding doors for a wall mounted TV. The doors might have a laser cut botanical pattern. I don’t watch TV, but it would be nice to watch CZcams on a big screen. And finally, I’ll be putting down slate flagstone in a natural pattern on my tiny patio. Specifically, Daltile Natural Stone Collection Mongolian Spring 12 in. x 24 in. Slate Flagstone from HD.
Everyone who visits my house is awestruck, even though it’s only half finished!

Some of the most beautiful pieces of furniture and flooring have knots, character, and wearing or are perfectly imperfect and I respect the hell out of the two of you epoxying boards that others might get squeamish about and toss. They look stunning, I currently have carpet and I’m so tired of cleaning only to feel like the carpet is still harboring filth and there’s just something about hardwood or even softwood floors with rugs that are easily replaceable and/or washable to keep a truly clean house. That and the wear that floors get only compliment the purpose of having wood flooring.
It's gonna be one of those projects where you're glad you did it, and you're glad you don't have to do it again lol. I just got a house that had oak floors under carpet, decided I'm going to extend them into the kitchen and then hire a pro to do the refinishing

As a woodworker, seeing you freehand on the tablesaw gave me anxiety!!
So much anxiety. Please use the miter gauge for your fingers’ sake! Table saw kickback is a real risk and many people have injured themselves this way.

Many helpful tips in this video. One thing that you need to tell people is to use a mitersaw instead of freehanding your boards through the table saw. I have seen the dangerous and injurious results of not using a tablesaw properly.
Yeah especially if your only cutting angles. Hell a skilsaw would be safer
Yeah freehanding a cut on a table saw is a BIG no-no. I already lost one finger, in a road accident, I wanna keep all the 9 others. My grandpa lost a finger in a table saw, ugh.
For real! Miter cuts are going to be easier and safer on the tool named for that.
Also, You can cut scribes way better with a jigsaw and belt sander with so much less risk. I’ll free hand a rip cut all day but not for a scribe into stone or brick but not on the end. If you catch something it’s going to rip it out of you hands faster than you can react and your going to just be hoping your hand doesn’t get in the business end.
Those scribes looked loose to me, they cut the video quick on it so I’m guessing the hand dandy deal and method was not the best. You can accomplish better results with a $2 compass, and the right tool, like a jigsaw.
I don’t like that I’m talking smack, I just think people watching should know that these methods are more dangerous and less effective than what skilled tradesmen actually do.

How long did the sorting process take?
That's looking awesome! I had a question when using utility grade oak, how much of the wood you get is unusable? like how much should you order extra to make sure you have enough good pieces?
10% is standard 15-25% extra depending on your preferences for cabin grade.
All the pieces are usable it just depends on what you want out of the project, at the end of the day character is character, the main thing to look out for is milling issues, and structural issues

Do you have a link to this hardwood? There are some LL flooring stores near us but I can’t seem to find this on the site. We have to rip all our hardwood out due to toxic mold and we’ve lost so much money to it that I need to find hacks like this. Perfectly timed video!

Lay a 5 pound roofing felt on the subfloor before nailing the hardwood ,otherwise that wood is gonna get moisture an warp

I'm scared you're going to lose fingers with that table saw like that. Use a miter saw for angled cuts and a jig saw for the scribed pieces. You're really playing with fire. Beautiful job on the floor, though.
Oh my. Shouldn't you be leaving a 1/4" expansion gap at the walls and fireplace? That could buckle on you if you don't. Esp with no vapor barrier.
We did in the walls but not on the fireplace as we wanted the gaps to be minimal.
I'm impressed, so please don't take this the wrong way, but people should not mimic your table saw techniques herein. These are very dangerous. Table saws are only for STRAIGHT cuts. No curve of any kind should ever be attempted using a table saw because of the danger of the curf getting pinched which can cause kickback and possibly sucking your hand into the blade (which happens every 9 minutes in the U.S. according to SawStop). The proper tool for cutting out the pieces that border the fireplace is a bandsaw or a jigsaw (or even a scroll saw). Not a table saw!
