@@SeanDarmal i second this comment, i dont have the evidence but i feel that most of the medical youtubers are people with super high academic capabilities and ambitions, was gunners since undergrad, charmed the right people for good speciality residencies, became surgeons, and just flipped a switch magically and now are the fun uncles of medicine., telling people to not study 24/7. This is my first vid of yours ive seen , but i like your approach and will sub to get more content like this cause my other med content , i love/hate because its informative but im a low stat prospective med school candidate who cant go 24/7 study even if you held me at gunpoint.

On March 14th 2022, I received my second Unmatched letter from ERAS. Depressed that this was the second time going through the cycle, I believed that I was not going to achieve my dream of becoming a psychiatrist (which is what I entered med school for day one). Then, after two weeks of applying post-match-writing cover letters, getting rejected numerous times in SOAP and after-all while going through the depressed state-of-mind of feeling like a failure, I finally got it: an offer to interview at a new psychiatry program. After an hour of interviewing, they told me they would reach out soon if I got the job. A week later, on March 31st 2022, I got offered a position as a psychiatry resident.
After this whole ordeal, as well as numerous failures during medical school, it is super easy for me to have imposter syndrome. And from what I heard residency can be like, I’m both excited because I finally achieved my dream, but also nervous because I don’t want to continue feeling like I’m behind everyone else, like I did for four straight years in medical school.
With all this said, I definitely needed to watch this and am glad it was in my recommended videos. It reminded me that I’m going through what everyone else around me will go through, so I don’t feel as alone entering this profession as people start referring to me as “doctor.” So thank you :)

I don't know how I came across this video, but I'm glad I did. Whenever I see medical content online it's usually always the dandy stuff that's put in videos, which subconsciously makes you feel that you're always a huge step behind. The reality of the matter is most doctors go through the fake it till you make it life throughout the first few months of residency because of the lack of clinical experience, and I hope more light gets shed on this.

Did my residency 30 years ago in big bad busy NYC hospitals with no work hours protection. Unlimited work hours, no sleep was the rule. Relatively speaking you people nowadays don't know how good you have it. Anyway it is normal to feel behind the eight ball at times. Good idea to arrive early as you are free to catch up before daily responsibilities start. Since many of the cases and workups will be the same or similar you will learn how to organize and be efficient. Organization and efficiency are crucial regardless how smart you may be. As a PGY2 I always arrived early on the start of a new service and reviewed the patient charts as I was responsible for the PGY1's under me. It becomes challenging and fun.

It was amazing to hear their stories of medical school and watch them looking a little lost and fearful of their senior. Fake it til you make it, JESUS, that's so true. Idk how I'm way more comfortable than when I first entered my internship two years ago, it's amazing (a lot of things I'm still clueless at but at least I know I just gotta study the topic and integrate it and make sense of it). I'm not sure the terminology is the same as here in Chile, though. Here, an intern is someone who isn't a Dr yet, but has more responsibilities than a med student. Esentially, an intern is a med student in his 2 last years of medical school. After that, you become a Dr, and then you can go on and get into a specialty, or you can just go and start working as a general practitioner. And as any of those two, you can work as a resident. I'd love to hear how it is there.

I was just scrolling through CZcams and found this video of yours. Everything you've said is so relatable, and I felt exactly the same way as I graduated and was finally a Doctor, working at emergencies and everything. But what I loved the most was the paiting behind you. It feels SO good to find people in medicine that are somehow just normal and like the same stuff that we do. And I would like to know: do this paiting (of Sasuke and Itachi) has some special meaning for you?

    • @SeanDarmal
      @SeanDarmal  Před 2 lety +1

Omg. Yes it does. It’s a memento for me. My brother passed away a few years ago. But it still seems recent at times. Either way. The head flick he did to sasuke, and suddenly he understood everything itachi did was for his little brother. It reminded me of my brother, that he loved us/me more than anything, no matter how hard life got.

Though I am only a 2nd year med student. I find myself questioning this all the time. I think the most important thing you could do is to shadow different types of doctors and ask them this question. What residency/specialties are you considering?

    • @thebipedCentaur

@@JasonKrastein hey Jason! So I'm currently working as a medical intern(MBBS-Y6) at my university's hospital, and seem to be fine with every one of them except General surgery and OBGYN haha.
Since year 3 I recognised I wanted to pursue an integration of cosmetology and psychiatry. That opens- dermatology, plastics and psychiatry(secondary).
On one hand, my passion for cosmetology and mental health related to it has made me put it in my prime area of interests, yet lately it makes me feel like I could better contribute to the society if I choose a more "medical" branch.
Sadly my psyche seems to be succumbing to how derm is viewed by most of my peers and consultants(smirks when they see a derm aspirant).
I've talked to some residents in derm at my uni and everyone said they chose it for the money, and working hours. No kidding, 2 out of the 4 female residents expressed they wanted to pursue other fields but were "nudged" towards derm by their families.
I know its a personal experience and I recognise there are many passionate dermatologists out there, but sadly I am yet to meet one irl, and I work in a top university in my country.
A professor of pediatrics asked me to not waste my potential on "creams and lasers" and use it in "real" medicine. And it went right through my heart hahah :')
      lol sorry for the rant.

@@thebipedCentaur I think people definitely look down on term bc of their lifestyle. But there is so much you can do with Derm and combing psych. You will be making a big difference in patients lives. Have you ever considered oncology ?
