Ahmed Alid was 'self-radicalised' murderer and prompt response saved more lives says police chief

- Self-radicalised Ahmed Alid was acting alone when he murdered a stranger in the street “in some form of retribution for what was happening in Gaza”, a senior counter-terrorism police officer has said.
Alid would have killed more people after stabbing 70-year-old Terence Carney if police had not stepped in, according to Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley, who is head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East.
Mr Dunkerley told the PA news agency: “Our investigation has shown that Alid was acting alone.
“There was no wider threat.
“He had radicalised himself looking at online media, and this galvanised his extreme views to the point that he then took it upon himself to go out and attack innocent members of the local community in some form of retribution for what was happening in Gaza.”
