When you adapt a story that isn’t your own, either adapt it faithfully or don’t do it at all.
To an extent that's true. But it has worked in the past with stories like clueless (Emma), and Mel brook's Frankenstein. The bigger problem seems to be that they don't know what made them so great in the first place or don't care.
@@user-yw8wv4tc8d Young Frankenstein is kind of a bad example because.
1: It's a satire, it makes it very clear it's a satire, poking fun of the original Frankenstein movies.
2: Even as a satire it functions as a Sequel, clearly stating it's about the SON of the original Frankenstein.
... Now ironically what does serve as a good example is the very movie it satires. "Frankenstein 1931." Which is a movie WIDELY different from the book it's based on, and yet holds up to this very day and is so classic it cemented the aesthetics of what we think of when thinking Frankenstein monster and the creation scene.
Another great example is "Batman Tas." from 1991... People don't even realize that show pretty much re-wrote the entire Batman Mythos and almost all the villains, it was just so good it legit just created a brand new standard for Batman and what we think when thinking Batman.
But what both of these properties have in common though is they LOVE the source Material. "Young Frankenstein." is a love letter to the classic movies, and Batman Tas goes out of it way to take what WORKS about the classic comic books and discard what doesn't work, pulling inspiration and ideas from the most classic comic books of its time.
They LIKE what they are adapting... For some reason modern Hollywood writers DESPISE the source material and it shows.
If they have the agreement of the author, they can do whatever they like😄
@@MoonPhantomTAS isn't an adaption though, it's a unique spin on batman. If TAS was adapting a storyline and pointlessly changed many elements it'd be dissapointing.
But these days they want to remake everything straight into 🌈 Why not create your own new series based on books that were LGBTQ from the outset. Oh I know why- it doesn't sell.@@user-yw8wv4tc8d
Ah the life of a reader. Constantly having your favorite books ruined by movie producers 😮💨
So what is the solution? I think more people need to think about this, seriously. Maybe there needs to be a re-think of who controls entertainment media? The only thing they care about is money. They don't even want to commit to spending after a certain point. That's when things get sloppy. Maybe fans need to step up and support artists.
@@gems3604I agree artist should supported, but it gets hard when those same artists would rather make a different story entirely from an already existing franchise for their own gratification or political ideals rather then make an original story of their own. I understand that adaptations aren’t always gonna be 100% accurate, but when these producers or whoever is in charge of media deliberately change something that literally didn’t need to be changed just to check off stupid DEI box it gets annoying and we’re left with a less than desirable story. Plus it also doesn’t help that this season that was supposed to be about Penelope and Colin’s love story didn’t get a lot of screen time together and the whole relationship felt forced and rushed.
It wasn't an interracial story in the books
These tv series in the last 15 years have been meant to stir people towards sexual perversion and insanity. A lot of people have been converted into LGBTQ lifestyle due to these shows. It's what I've always known.
Anyone know where I can buy the book I’m really interested in the story now. 😊
“Evil cannot create anything new, they can only corrupt and ruin what good forces have invented or made.” - JRR Tolkien.

Not every adaptation ruins an original work of art. Wicked is an adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. I love … love Wicked!!!!
@@SandraPerez-gf4xvbut that was created by talented people who respected the original source material.
It's just a show chill
@@LartinBeats-rg6pf it's not a show. It's a piece of woke crap, contrived to remove every ounce of historical accuracy, by dumbing it down for younger viewers. The producers don't seem to realise that by doing that they erase centuries of human evolution.
Utterly worthless!
As a writer myself, anytime the author backs a dramatic change in the story usually claiming it was their plan all along I loose complete faith in that writer.
So true...
Do they sign something saying they can't criticize the adaptation because I would be like I needed money and I do not like what route the choose to go I am sorry fans of the book.
Right? This is like what happened with the Queen Charlotte spin off, they had to have like some political agenda or reason why people of color was part of society, when viewers in season 1 already accepted that oh, it's like parallel regency where all this people come together in society. And then Julia Quinn had to make a book based on that when she clearly commented before that she wouldn't do it, lol

Ugh I know. I'm done with JQ now. She's a sellout 😢
I swear, if you aren't going to follow the book, just please don't make a show off of it!!!! Go make your own story instead of self-inserting yourself!

I’m going to stop watching Bridgerton if they will make Francesca lesbian. I’m so done with this forceful shows.
She literally married a man at the end of the season so I don't see that happening.

Franny, No! Her number one goal in life was to BE A MOTHER! She struggles with miscarriage and losing a spouse. Finding love again. Her story was beautiful, and now it is this.
Well, I think I can guess how the new showrunner actually feels about pregnancy/children and the desire to be a mother... :/
Well infertility just isn't a worthy struggle apparently. It would have been nice to represent a women with infertility considering how many women today actually struggle with this. But I guess bisexuallty or being a lesbian trumps that. I can't even think of any storylines represented today about infertile women. This is a subject close to my heart as I had this struggle like many others women.
@ozziegirl71 Agreed. She came from a family of six (in the story) and assumes she can have a large family as well with a lot of babies for her to love. To her husband dying suddenly of a brain aneurysm, while she's pregnant with their first child after years of marriage, then to miscarry. Only being able to have one child her entire life after getting remarried for the sole purpose of having children. Falling in love with her late husband's cousin was a bonus, but apparently Frannies story isn't riveting enough. She need to just be a lesbian, because that's harder and more relatable to the masses.
@@ozziegirl71 Right? I can't have children, and I am heartbroken about that (will consider adoption if I find a spouse, but I'm still heartbroken), and I come from a long line of women who struggle with infertility (I was supposed to be impossible, as was my youngest brother). It makes me furious/sad how infertility is dismissed as "no big deal, why do you want kids anyway?"
Choosing to be child-free is a whole other planet than wanting children and not being able to have them!!!

@@Emmannie I do the same. They are pointless.
They DO know this is supposed to take place in the 19th century...where if you were even suspected of being gay you could be stoned...right?
Having read the books, I know they are extra sexy. You don't have to make everyone an egregious libertine & make it 3 ways, whoring & LGBT where it is not. Like you don't need to change the stories that much to keep it sexy!
read the books please you will be so happy
I didn’t understand how his character went from Strong heterosexual to full-blown Bi-sexual.
With the power of NETFLIX 🤣🤣
I'm just confused why so many film adapters think I care about who they like to xxx with
Benedict's scenes added NOTHING to the show or to his story or character growth. There was absolutely no point to it other than checking the 'inclusivity' boxes. It's so depressing.
Because hollyweird western dramas always favor and deify sex as a necessity and lifeblood for life
Benedict always sermed a little fluid.
I actually REALLY loved Francesca's storyline this season. Having a relationship that wasn't as "dramatic" but could be slow and quiet in its own way, and still passionate, sweet, and clearly genuine. She literally had an entire conversation with her mother in the last episode about how happy she felt that her mother was finally able to embrace the idea that she doesn't have to have some kind of hyper-passionate love story to truly be in love. A MESSAGE I ACTUALLY REALLY APPRECIATE. And then, in the very final seconds, we go from a beautifully wrapped up love story that may represent neurodivergent or generally awkward and shy people falling in love, to HER MAGICALLY ALL OF A SUDDEN EXPERIENCING LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT WITH A RANDOM WOMAN?? WHAT??? That doesn't even make SENSE in the character, as she's written through this whole season, whether male or female. It was honestly aggravating.
Yeah they should've left that out this season and could've started with it next season to keep more fans to be honest. Michaela could've visited them. It was poor execution and decision making IF that was ALWAYS the plan. Let people like you and others enjoy it through the end and in marriage life away from home we could see her grow to like this other person so it doesn't seem so disrespectful to all that was written this season prior to that moment.
@@amandachilds5290 Agreed, the timing of it just felt so rushed and artificial that it essentially invalidates everything established about her and John. I could almost understand if she met the cousin later and through the course of events one of them developed feelings for the other (still hard to picture Francesca just jumping ship all of a sudden, for someone who tends to like what is familiar and peaceful to suddenly switch it all up), but right after they've gotten married?? Right after the big talk with her mom?? It feels like one person wrote her entire season 3 storyline but called out sick on the last day to finish episode 8, and the substitute glanced at it for two seconds and said "What if I add a lesbian cheating scandal right here?" EXCUSE ME WHAT-
@@quibsbloch1088 yes, they got too excited and couldn't hold the secret any longer ! It was easy to miss if you sneezed even! That right there is BAD Work, like you said a different person came in and wrote a new set of directions for her but kept everyone else the same and the dialogue too. It used to be that I could watch old time movies and regency movies to escape today's bs. Now i cant even watch that for some normality and decency.
It's why we canceled all subscriptions, now we just have free Tubi, Sling, Roku, CZcams...etc. Any new movies/shows will make it on there any way eventually, and there's no point in paying for something we'll probably be disappointed in.
Watch 1940s movies!
I started doing that when I realized none of these platforms were telling any more decent stories and I found some pretty interesting stories from eras past (like old Hollywood). There were some movies that were classics that I had known of but never seen before and now I've seen them five times over just to relax. Also, from doing this I realized that Hollywood acted a lot like Disney in that they would take a story that did well and make it BETTER though SHORTER (this also lead me to read and listen to more classic books). YOU should give it a shot! :D
@@whitneyvanwaters7621ooohh!!! Do you have some recommendations for both movies and books? 😊
I hate to break it to you, but queer people still existed in history. There are many notable historical figures who were gay. Emily Dickinson, for example. I’m guessing you now think she should be removed from middle school literature classes? 🤡
My own sister, a lesbian, married for ten years with two children herself, has told me this was a terrible twist. When your own target audience is fed up up with your crap, you know you screwed up. Then again, she's always been a lot more conservative on issues than even I am. She's chosen to home school my niece and nephew because of how out of hand the education has gotten here in California.
I’m sure they are going to keep similar plot beats for Francesca but rework it with her and John before she jumps ship for michaela/mikaela? Whatever.
I think the upset really stems from basically throwing out their whole slow build up of John and Fran having this quiet and off beat love that isn’t typically shown then literally wasting our time by saying it’s basically a comphet marriage and her true love is actually this whole other person.
I think in the books it was tragic because Fran and John very much loved each other? To imply Fran just gets along with him and actually has no sexual attraction for him is pretty much a bummer for his character.
I bet this very much happened in regency times for queer women and I get they want some of the Bridgerton leads to be gay and not just add gay side characters, but man…as a demisexual wlw girl, why do I not give an f about this choice?
This feels like Jess creating a self insert and I just don’t have faith in her writing. She’s shown me so far she’s rather incompetent.
Maybe if a Shakespearean level gay writer was on board I’d be intrigued. But this feels like it’s gonna be clunky and weird.
Bridgerton already is a fantasy version of the regency age. They are slowly erasing any prejudice and hardships of the times besides women being treated like cattle in marriage and the clear class divide that still exists.
Now they are laying on thick this voyeuristic gaze on our queer coded bridgerton kids despite in s1 when that one gay lord told Benedict of the torture of being in the same room as your lover and having to pretend your love doesn’t exist or queen charlotte’s gay servants dancing in quiet corners together.
Ben’s scenes felt so dry because it was just shallow hookups and I always feel uncomfortable with the whole hypersexual stereotype of bisexuals in media.
Thé LGBT and other communities want their own properly written storylines. Not for straight characters to be stolen.
@@swordchild0013 They're not communities in any sense of the word. Only fringe groups.
Why would a lesbian me more of a target audience?
@surlespasdondine ... Is that a genuine question? It's no secret that politically, lesbians and the queer at large tend to align more to the left side of the aisle. This show's target audience is most definitely women who lean left. The alleged plot for Francessca appears to be a lesbian plot line, or even if she's not lesbian it is a homosexual relationship between two women. Therefore the target audience.
Currently dealing with infertility at 28…I’m actually finishing my IVF shots (10 days worth) tomorrow. It saddens me that infertility is sooo underrepresented in books and movies. I was looking forward to seeing her struggles on screen. Not just for the representation but because it helps people to know what women are going through. So sad they changed a beautiful and rare storyline and made it about queer people….again.
I’m so sorry . I hope everything works out . I pray you become a mother and a great one too
Good luck!
I’m so sorry you’re dealing with that! Have you researched going carnivore for fertility? Dr. Robert Kiltz is an excellent resource for that, he’s an OBGYN who has helped so many women with fertility by changing their diet to meat-based.
I was in your place 25 years ago. We ended up adopting two girls! It was a hard journey but so worth it in the end. I’m now a Nana. Best wishes to you!
I'm so sorry. Sending you hugs.
Also they demolish Francesca and John's love story. She actually loved John in the book. It was maybe not as passiont but still she was truly devoted and in love with him.
Do they even realize that the Title of the book for Francesca's story is "When He Was Wicked" 😂😂
That's why when the cast was asked to name the books they couldn't.
I expect them to reveal Michaela as a trans woman.
That title doesn't mean what you think it means.
as an introverted woman dealing with infertility issues like francesca, i related so much to her in the book. i held it so close to my heart. the fact that they took that “representation” away to represent the lgbt+ just because the show runner felt like it is so disrespectful and selfish. i loved this show but i won’t watch if they continue like this. her book could have been such a beautiful and impactful season too.
It was such an odd choice for them to go, "She's not actually introverted & shy, she's just gay!"
It undermines her as a character too, since now the audience loses sympathy for someone who pushed that hard for a quick marriage that she didn't need (not for money, safety, housing, quiet time, or acceptance from a mother who is happy to have another unmarried daughter). Sure, Fran feels different for being gay. Okay, portray that. No need for a gotcha reveal, or to push a love story that Fran didn't even actually want and that sacrifices another person's chances at love elsewhere. I feel bad for John being made into an unwitting beard, and Michaela for being caught in the middle.
@@em8066 "she's not shy and introverted, she's just gay" EXACTLY. again they are making being gay a personality. it's just sexuality, personal character features shape you so much more, why would they do this 😭
@@bethy_cuter so true
Why is there an assumption that they will shy away from dealing with infertility? We don’t know what the plot lines are yet?
Yes! Francesca's story was the first one I had come across and helped me cope with the feeling of being a 'damaged goods'. I had been diagnosed around 3 years ago.
When I had learned of this development, I can not understand why they couldn't make an original outlet for their lgbtq thing. Detached from bridgerton.
Like are they still feeling so left out that they decided to ride on the fame of the bridgerton franchise? It's selfish. But they don't really care about that, don't they?
They know, they can not make an original film in a historical setting relevant enough, creative enough with loyal fans who are moved by the original stories impact that they had to go ride on what the original ones had already achieved.
What a pile of bullshit.
Brett I hope you know that even many of us who are LGBT are disappointed by this “representation”. Benedict participated in three ways and wasn’t interested in a committed, monogamous relationship, and it’s implied that Francesca is going to cheat on her husband. What a wonderful portrayal of LGBT people, cheaters and non-monogamists. It’s so sad.
Yes this! Thank you! This portrayal does so much harm
It’s so uncomfortable how they had Benedict “come out” too. Tilly literally told him “well you’re not attracted to every woman, maybe you haven’t met the right guy.” That’s such a similar argument people use to try to convince gays to be straight.
It does seem like gay people in movies are often depicted as being completely against monogamy or even faithfulness or even basic morality.
Benedict actually makes sense given the time. It wasn’t accepted so those types of situations were often how things played out.
@@Sbella.b883Given the time period and that it wasn’t accepted, the whole scenario does make sense. You have to view it in context.
As a BOOK STAN. I was okay with the added side storylines but DO NOT CHANGE THE STORIES OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS. It ruins everything else for those of us who LOVE the books. Sooo disappointing. Boycotting Netflix over this.
George RR Martin recently said:
"Everywhere you look, there are more screenwriters and producers eager to take great stories and 'make them their own. No matter how major a writer it is, no matter how great the book, there always seems to be someone on hand who thinks he can do better, eager to take the story and 'improve' on it. 'The book is the book, the film is the film,' they will tell you, as if they were saying something profound. Then they make the story their own. They never make it better, though. Nine hundred ninety-nine times out of a thousand, they make it worse."
Let that sink in. I hate the changes in Bridgerton. I've read all the books. They are not high literature, they are simple reads with simple stories. Yet they were completely fine that way and fulfilled their purpose. They were entertaining. There is no need to change the stories that much. There wasn't even any need to add the huge amount of side plots to this series. No one needs the Mondrichs.

I saw lots of ig comments that call the bookfans bigot and homophobic, so I'd say she succeeds to a certain extent.
I'm not interested in gay romance and Bridgerton series was not it.

@@Figarro253 ig is brain dead 😂
But a lot of people still keep using this argument, and double down on it. I'm getting weary of it, honestly. It's so disingenuous. But don't you find Julia Quinn's Instagram public response equally ... exasperating? She said that she told the showrunners that it was very important to preserve the spirit and integrity of the Francesca John story. I'm not quoting her verbatim, but that is pretty much what she wrote. So why did the showrunners include those Francesca reaction shots after the wedding kiss and when she meets Michaela. I did not read the books. I didn't know anything about Michael and I got mad. I think that is what provoked people. They set up a beautiful romance and then spill acid over it. Why?
A lot of people around the world are asking the same question. Why wasn't Eloise the subject of a queer romance? It's amazing how many people are asking that question. I haven't heard a response from the showrunners other than they keep repeating they want a queer Bridgerton romance and that Jess Brownell "identifies" with Francesca. But I don't buy that. Every young woman has gone through a "changeling phase," when she feels she doesn't belong. But other than this openly declared Bridgerton queer romance agenda the showrunners have announced, I think there is something else going on. It's not just about making Francesca queer. Again, they could have and still could make Eloise queer. A queer Eloise doesn't bother most people. So I think it really has to do with Michael. Specifically, they want a woman inserted in the place of the male Michael. The showrunners have not said this. Instead they keep gaslighting everyone and insisting there is no issue regarding the genderswap. Michaela is the same as Michael, they say. But of course there is a huge difference for so many reasons. Anyway, I think this is about more than just a sapphic romance. Eloise is low hanging fruit and they didn't bite. Why?
it's ruined. i'm done with this. now bennedict wants to "explore" so there goes the cinderella story and francesca is lesbian. yeah.

Apparently they are going to introduce an Easy Asian girl woman character - who likely will be Sophie - but who knows at this point ? When the actress for Michaela was first introduced everyone thought she would be Sophie.

As a bi woman I 100 per cent agree Benedict's 3some arc was completely unnecessary. What even was the point
Agree! I didn’t like the soft porn
What Betsy fails to comprehend as a producer is that Francesca is not Betsy, and that when you change the main character from the story, it is no longer The Story!
Maybe I’m a prude but I also feel like the buildup to any kind of physical interaction between Simon and Daphne was so entertaining and now everyone is just jumping on each other before marriage. That would have been such a HUGE thing in that time period I feel like it takes so much away from the whole marriage market thing for everyone to be dropping their morals like that.
Exactly! In Pride and Prejudice Lydia running off with Mr Wickham was a huge deal. She could have destroyed ALL of her sisters marriage prospects if Darcy hadn't convinced Wickham to marry her.
Chaperonage matters, until it doesn't - societal expectations matter, until they don't - class matters, until it doesn't -- the rules matter, until they don't.
I guess the one constant remains: money...
Now it's gonna be nothing but sex scenes I'm sure, and I think we've all had more than enough sex scenes to last a lifetime. The suspense and romance was so much better than just fucking.
Unfortunately that part is actually accurate to the books
Polin do get intimate before their wedding in the book series as well
The show changes the "strict" society's rules according to the "needs" of the plot, and the wishes of Cressida's shoulders.
I'm am hoping that the bullying causes them to re-add/actually announce Michael and just keeps Michaela as some side character/friend.
Yes! And fire Jess. Brimsly was done great and loved his heartbreaking romantic story. We need more original stories, not ruining already made characters by smearing them through the mud with Jess’s agenda.
Sadly they're not going to. All they'll do is double down.
The show runners have thoroughly left the business of pleasing the audience. They are in the business of indoctrinating the audience. The show is a full-run ad, and you'd be a fool to think otherwise.
I hope they re-shoot season 3.
It will be fun if they were twins...
As someone struggling with infertility, I find it fascinating how the LGBTQ community erases it, minimizes it, and obsesses over pregnancy. It’s hurtful and weird.
you know queer people can have infertility issues right?
You don't know what you're talking about. The topic of infertility already came up. Both the Dukes mother and Queen Charlotte's daughters were having infertility issues. The fan's anger is completely warranted. It's over for me and Im not even a book reader. I listened to the audio books between seasons. The showrunner completely railroaded this season's highly awaited "Polin" story to shove in pointless threesomes and lesbian fanfiction. What did she expect would happen? That millions of straight women who read romance novels would be like, 'sure, no problem!' ???? I really despise when showrunners/writers inject their own discourse (of a minority of the show's audience in this case) into an IP that was created for the complete opposite audience thats been waiting YEARS for this adaptation. The showrunner stole the Fran & Michael fan's opportunity to see their story played out on screen. Awful.
Same. I can't finish Bridgerton, even if I tried. I'll just stick with seasons 1& 2 to rewatch in the future. I am so irate by Francesca's story on the show. Francesca felt different in the books because she was a forward thinker, and she also implies that being around other people drains her like a true introvert, and John was the first guy who understood that. Then she fell in love with Michael 4 years after John died. Bridgerton has lost the plot, and they took a rugged man from the book series that many wanted to see onscreen, myself included, and turned him into a woman to please the showrunners own personal fantasies, completely disregarding the entire fan base. It's ridiculous, and we should feel cheated and man. They easily could've had Eloise gone down that route if they needed to.
@@youngandrestlessjean3634 Such a shame for you and what you were looking forward to. They literally HAVE lost the PLOT.

It's um.. 3 season too late. Just pretend the Bridgerton TV series is not exist, or it's the whole different story (not based by the novel), it make your life easier.
I wish one day in the future people are going to make another series or even movies that really based by the novel.
You know, historical accurate British Regency society era setting, just like 'Sense and Sensibility' or 'Pride and Prejudice' movie. I don't mind if there's no spicy smutty innit. I swear those is the plague that made the producers and writers nowadays lazy, just throw a lot of kinky and degenerates sex scenes, unhinged edgy plot, and brainrot drama.
As a Bi woman I want the new story line with the much needed representation rather than some one time fling Bennedict has or some failed tragic love story that Brimsley has. This story hasn't been true to the books since. Queen Charlotte didn't even exist in the books yet she is the reason many of use decided to even watch the shown. Let's be real here.
@@audacity9740 Way to make a spicy comeback (on behalf of another) but I'm not in the wrong here.
Reminds me of the new Percy Jackson show. The casting, plot, pacing and world building were all changed for no reason, with no explanation, and instead of adding anything towards the new adaptation, they only confused fans of the books as well as new viewers. Bridgerton only seems to be following the trend set by Hollywood.
Exactly, I wanted to enjoy the new Percy Jackson adaptation especially because the writer was involved this time but I couldn't, it was like a different story.
The three way almost ruined it for me. I saw what was coming and just skipped the scenes entirely. I'm just pretending it didn't happen lol.
I did too. Just fast-forwarded. It is not the show I want to see it in and not the character I want to do it.
Omg I skipped it too😂😂😂😂

My problem with the gender swapping is that it destroys Francesca’s story. She loves her husband and is devastated after he dies and then she losses their baby. Her story is about loss and infertility. She wants a family so much that she is willing to re enter society to get remarried and have a family. Also she doesn’t fall from Michael at first sight, he does but she is devoted to John. In the show the way they introduced Michaela makes it look like Francesca has never being in love with John. So her story looses all the magic. The show runner is killing the best book in the series and by the way there are other characters better suited for a queer story like Eloise, but nope this show runner had to go after the autistic mom.
They are running the best book in the series, but I guess Netflix hasn’t learned anything from the Witcher fiasco. Audiences want good stories if you want something different then hire good writers, pay them well to come up with original scripts.
Yessss you said it perfectly 🙌
The whole plot of the story is gone just for the sake of "inclusivity"
God it was my favorite book..was soo looking forward for the adaptation
We all wanted Michael
A huge part of Micheal's story arc also included incredible guilt about inheriting everything from John's title to even (to his devastation) his clothing... and then, eventually, his wife. A female can't inherit titles and would have no use for his clothing. If they go this route, I bet Francesca carries her baby to full term so that they can avoid the whole infertility issue. However, Micheal was one of my favorite characters in the book series (I like him a lot more than Francesca), so I'm not interested in watching that season and I've long been over Ben's promiscuity (given the times, I'm certain he's riddled with STDs at this point). On top of being so disappointed in how Polin was cheated out of an amazing season, I'm going to preserve the respect I still have for Quinn and the book series by not watching any more of the tv series.
queer people can have infertility issues too
@@aggu5477Yep. Because they have the wrong plumbing for baby making.
The only reason I started the series was because I read somewhere that the author and show runners said the main couples would be the same as the books. I surmised that meant main plot points, personality and gender at the least. This is not the same.
I remember Shonda Rhimes saying that. lol
@@em8066Shonda Rhimes from Grey’s Anatomy, Shonda Rhimes?
How did y’all NOT see this coming??? Honest question.
@@BlueDauntless Well, for me personally, I’ve never seen Grey’s Anatomy. I stopped keeping with up cable programs and Hollywood 15 years or more ago. I’ve hardly kept track of anything new or watched things as they have aired for a long time. And honestly, except for Julie Andrews I still don’t know the names of any of these actors or actresses.
I do however love to read and historical fiction is my favorite so thought I would check it out based on those things I had read about it.
Me too, I wouldn't have watched it otherwise.
I'm pretty sure they never said that. This show has diverged from the books several times already. Including the fact that queen Charlotte wasn't even in the books. Why be surprised now?
I checked out in the middle of season 2, after they took too many creative liberties. From the beginning, they changed elements of the books that made almost every character a more shallow, empty version of themselves. Gone were their faults and insecurities, with perfect girl bosses left behind. The books were wonderful, and I'm very sad they weren't respected more when adapted to screen.
The only change that was goid was Kate's sister being mad in the books she just like oh well Mrs. Featherington caught the man a court sucking my sister chest.
Star Wars and Dr Who fans have been saying this for years but they're still being ignored.
My sister calls it Bangerton. Feel free to steal.
you're not kidding! This season was so graphic it was ick for me
@@esunablizzard6482I was there for the storyline, so anytime something graphic was about to happen I would just fast-forward. But now I don't like even the storyline anymore. So sad
Hahahahha good one! I saw Honest Trailers did a synopsis for it recently, and their title parody was “Poundtown Abbey” which is also a riot! 😂
And agree, too graphic indeed!
Your sister isn’t wrong. I’ve read that “Bridgerton” is “Fifty Shades of Grey” meets classical era. Thank goodness I don’t watch this show.
I had to skip like 10 sex scenes
Aside from my issue wjth the francesca situation, this season was supposed to be the culmination of penelope and colins love story. This was supposed to be their happy ending they were more like a side story to everyone elses drama this season rather than the main focus. Its so ridiculous.
Yes!! They hardly got any screen time for them being the main couple.
Part of that had to do with the way the series revealed Whistledown, which was vastly different than the books. I agree- there was TOO much going on overall. They should have spent less time on secondary plots (Mondrich, Featherington drama, etc - which aren’t even in the books) and like the previous seasons, just focused on the primary couple’s story.
@@sjlove20 I completely agree!! I also feel like Francesca's storyline was introduced way too early... It took too much focus away from the main couple. Since Benedict is next up they should have been setting the stage for him to meet Sophia.
Glad I wasn't the only who thought the main characters didn't get as much screen time as the past two season's couples. Not sure why Francesca's love story had to be included during Collin's either.
I agree. Francessa could have been in benedicts and Eloise season. The Mondrichs story was unnecessary, and did we really need to have yet another one of benedict's sex scenes.
Truthfully, I love historical dramas, but when I was confronted with a _s3x scene_ in the _first 20 minutes_ of the _first episode_ of this show, I said "wtf" and turned it off. Never went back. And I don't turn everything off that has even a hint of s3x in it, I'm not a prude. I just can't stand not only how historically _inaccurate_ it is, but even worse, how _unromantic_ it makes everything! The REASON historical dramas are a special genre to me is precisely that because of the social etiquette of the time, no one of good society _touched_ before they were literally engaged! Let alone spent time completely alone together regularly.
It makes those moments where two people who are in love get to be completely alone together _so full of unbearable romantic tension!_ And a simple brush of hands, or a simple hand momentarily on the waist?? **fans face** 😂 It's SPECIAL precisely because people aren't jumping on each other like cats in heat.
Yes, there were lots of people back then who had s3x outside of marriage, and did _not_ follow the social etiquette. But the truth _always_ comes out, and those people were considered pariahs and "loose", which is one of the worst things you could be called! (We would do well to go back to that, IMHO)
But ultimately, as soon as you remove ALL the actual social etiquette of the time you're representing, it not only looses _all_ romantic tension, it also makes it impossible to believe that the characters in the story are good people who are trying to be upright in any way.
I'm sorry, but if you _like_ watching dramas set in historical periods where they DO include straight-up sex scenes... you like p0rn.
Yes! Bridgerton is making p*rn socially acceptable! I watched the first 2 seasons with Vid Angel and it cut out a huge portion! But now I refuse to support Netflix. Even their landing page is full of p*rn and gross things I don’t want to see. To me the perversion is not worth it.
As someone who never read the books, I had no clue they changed this character. I was very confused at the reaction Francesca gave when meeting the cousin and I believed that her reaction was because she didn’t know the cousin was staying with them and was flustered at suddenly being told she had a second guest. It was also very evident that the shows quality was very much “lessened of late”.
It was pretty odvious that her reaction was due to her being infactuated by her and not simply because this was someone she didn't know.
Oh no! As a book reader, I was wondering who Michaela Stirling was. I didn’t even put together that they just turned Michael into a woman. Hell no!!!! If you want to explore your own queerness then create your own story!
Michael was the hottest man in the series. Like Shondaland really did that. So upset.
When that scene happened when she saw his cousin, I audibly said "Are you *kidding* me?" When I felt like I could finally see a character I could relate to and have an eventual main character moment in the series, it's gone. I'm very much introverted and on the spectrum and I thought Oh cool! They are actually portraying her accurately as a woman on the autism spectrum (special interest, doesn't like being around a ton of people, HATES loud environments). And then they make her a lesbian... Why can't there be a woman on the spectrum that's straight? Not bi, not queer, not lesbian. STRAIGHT. Don't even get me started on historical accuracy.
I had the exact reaction
A LOT of the female characters they do this to - Jo March, Anne Shirley, Elsa from Frozen - are much more likely to be Aspies/"on the spectrum" than alphabet soup. They keep taking that "representation" (said in Gary from Nerdrotic's French accent) from a group that actually needs it and giving it to a group that already sucks all the oxygen out of every room.
I felt exactly the same!!! I was sooo excited about Gran and John's relationship - thuer love being so neurodivergently perfect and then... All undermined and thrown out the window!!
Same. I was so happy for a quiet love story. Both my husband and I are introverted and ND. The representation meant so much. And then. . . Michaela. 😕
I am straight and I was introverted and it was nice to see that and now Jess is being problematic that if your introverted your secretly queer
I'm terribly sad to say there will be no more Bridgerton in my future if they go down this path, and it looks like they will.
So? Sad for who? There are many of us looking forward to this story line. It is only sad for you.
Finally, a safe space to say that I think introducing these LGBTQ+ stories in Bridgerton just ruined it for me.
The romance novel crowd is now finally learning what Marvel/Star Wars/LOTR/Warhammer/insert nerdy fandom here has been complaining about all this time, lol
😅 This is true. I feel bad for judging.
So true.
And those of us in quite a few of those fandoms, shouldn't be shocked by this, but dang it! Here we go again...

That's true.

It really is!
I live in a Regency house in England. I have read local newspapers from the time when my house was being built. I have literally held property deeds and original marriage documents from the time. It wasn't like Bridgerton.
The outrage made sense with the first season, but starting from there, the show runners have stated once and again (and twice and thrice) that Bridgerton is a fantasy in an alternative universe. There was no attempt at historical accuracy, not even in season 1.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought that season three was weird. I loved the first two seasons but I honestly couldn’t make it through episode 3 or 4 of season 3, and even making it that far was a bit of a struggle
Yeah, they spoiled.the romance, which is the real crime of that season.
my mom and i both thought that francesca’s reaction to being introduced to his cousin was her shock that she had to introduce herself, as if she were taken aback that her husband hadn’t mentioned her to his family or something. man oh man were we wrong 🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️
The oracle of Delphi that is Violet Bridgerton - once again has shown that only she knows what true love is. She is honestly the most insufferable character

@@rosierayyy you’re right, that was what I was saying
I destinctively remember my eye roll when I saw Francesca's face when Michaela appeared on screen. I mean come on seriously? Can't we just have an introvert love story? If you really want to be inclusive in your storytelling, have love stories with underused dynamics, such as introvert love, not another LGBTQ story. This cow doesn't have any more milk to give. Let it be.
I've ranted so many angry and disapointed comments accross platforms. I'm done. You articulated this very well. Thank you.
Same, I'm all ranted out. Time to the only thing they will consider, silently boycott the show. The dropping numbers are the only thing they'd MAYBE wake up to. But for me Bridgerton is over anyway. (And I think for many who's otherwise "hate-watch" as well because by the time the next season comes we would have let it go completely)
"In what universe would Francesca be allowed to marry a woman in the 1800s?"
If that breaks your suspension of disbelief for the setting...
And a man coming out as a 'woman' would have been heavily ostracized by society at that time.
It's a rather bigger ask than colorblind casting, in my opinion. I thought they did well by more or less just ignoring (in-story) the various ethnicities and just presented it as a fait accompli...but this is a rather glaringly different issue. All regency romances are fantasies (all historical fiction is, really, or it wouldn't be, you know, fiction), but you still have to tell the story in a way that isn't going to yank your audience right the hell out of the story. The colorblind casting--they had one, brief throwaway line (albeit a premise based on the show producer's profound ignorance) to "explain" it, and then never mention it again. So it works, more or less. But trying to force a same sex relationship/marriage into a society that even folks with barely any familiarity with the period know wouldn't fly? Yeah, no. Too far, it breaks it too much.
@@Frostfyre7 I turned a blind eye to the color-blind casting since it is a fantasy. Until Queen Charlotte had me turn my head, "Wait I thought it was a fantasy therefore historical accuracy is thrown out the window. However they create the new kind racism where POC (hate the term btw) are considered second rate civilians? What...?"
That broke my immersion once again. And now it's gone for the third time and completely this time.
As a Game of Throne fan who loved the first two seasons of Bridgerton, when I saw how much they changed Penelope and Colin's romance and then introduced Fran and Michaela, I just only sighed and knew I needed to find another series to watch. Fran's story is absolutely beautiful, the way she was so in love with John and when he passed, how much it destroyed her. She then found love again in Michael. Her story makes everyone feel seen as so many are dealing with infertility. A lot of people can relate to her.
Outlander was really good too, until they got into all the anal rape scenes with Jamie and Jack Randall. And we liked The 100 until they made Clark gay. I mean, WHY do they have to make everyone gay?
Yeah, but wanting to be a mother nowadays is frowned upon, especially if your skin is light. Today the hip thing for c4uc4ssian people is to be queer and leave the babymaking to other races.
I actually started to dislike the story in season two. I don’t think it’s authentic that so many couples have sex before marriage in the regency time. And then, after the girl dishonored herself (because that’s how it was in the time), she refuses to marry him? There was no “safe sex”, she could have been pregnant… and season 3 really tops everything. Actually stopped in the middle, when Collin takes Penelope to his place. Like: girl, what are you doing? You’re crazy????
I am actually happy that I didn’t continue. Just seeing everybody upset with those changes for Francesca and Benedict. Well done, Netflix 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 we as the audience should really boycott the rest of the show. Just like it was done with “Anne with an E”/“Anne of Green Gables”… I HATED what they did to all the characters. Like: it’s a show for children and out of nowhere there were THREE homosexual/queer characters. And it ended in season two. Audience didn’t like it 💪🏼💪🏼
YES! I stopped in season 2 because of that. I often think how much of an impact the 1960/70s had on how we look at what's acceptable in relationships today. Most of these shows get away with modern behavior like this because it IS so normal for US and, unless you're aware of the time, you wouldn't think twice. The first time this really hit home is when a Pastor (of all people) was explaining how if a man in Ancient times wanted to hook up with a single woman he went to a prostitute because every other woman who was raised in a self-respecting home belonged to her family and then to her husband. The same was true in the regency era. Why are any of these men going to "gentlemen's' clubs" and having hook ups with actresses if you could just sleep around with any girl you wanted of your own class??!
Off topic, but really??? (Anne with na E) it's been on my list for years, I loved the Sullivan series both Anne and Avonlea since I was a kid, and I had a want to watch this but not sure I want to watch this feeling towards the new series. Now I know I don't want to watch it. Thank you for that. I have no issues with queer relationships in TV and books but they have to belong there and not just exist for forced representation.
Same, I haven't finished watching the season either 🤡
The main issue with Francesca is we thought she was representing Neurodivergent or even Asexual people and that felt good since we already had a gay couple in Queen Charlotte, which also showed loving someone like King George going through mental health issues. So when Francesca was, and her new husband was too, representing more Introverted, possibly Neurodivergent and ever leaning Asexual characters, it seemed a fresh take and to feel good for people who relate BUT NOW with one tiny seen after she has made a lifelong commitment, she feels like she was just too arrogant or stubborn to LISTEN to older and wiser people who wanted her to wait, experience more BUT she jumped into marriage too soon. Now all the Neurodivergent, asexual and I recovered people feel dissed and tricked as if it is to say well you just are probably gay and need to figure it out.
Urrrgggg. I have someone close who fits all those areas and now they can't even find representation in the one place looked hopeful because the Good Doctor show is too far into the spectrum and he isn't asexual AND aren't these types ALWAYS shouting about inclusion and representation on the screen!? Also since when is hedonism and pleasure seeking just a sign of having lots of love to share? Benedict is too bored. He needs to learn LOVE is also helping to take care of the poor or sick or orphaned not just making out with super rich and the self indulgent !?!?
I won’t be watching Bridgerton anymore. I don’t want to watch a gay love story and I really don’t want to watch gay love scenes.
EXACTLY! They make me really uncomfortable. I CANNOT pretend they're normal... It's wrong to shove it down people's throats. I have absolutely nothing against gay people but there's a reason I'm straight.
I don’t watch “Bridgerton,” but I 100% agree with you. I don’t want to watch gay love stories or anything that has LGBTQA+ content in it, period.
Hell, I fast forwarded through most of the straight love scenes. I was there for the story, not the steamy bits!
I am uncomfortable with love scenes too- funnily enough the threesome with two men was less uncomfortable to me than some Colin/Penelope scenes. For me it all depends how it's filmed and acted.
The novel's original readers and fans (who buys and made the novel popular), and original target audience, from the beginning, are not lgbtq+ community. It was simply historical Jane Eyre's romantic vibes Regency era settings. No gay stuff, at all.
😂 It's hijacked, for the sake of inclusivity.
The writer’s statement is blasphemous as she’s saying that being a sellout is more important than being true to the world she created in her books. As it is, artistic license has been stretched very thin before this debacle.
Yeah she should've stuck up for own material, and there's this fabulous word called no. That's what what you tell someone like Jess, someone who thinks they know better.
@@youngandrestlessjean3634She was very clearly badgered into it. And she folded. It’s on her.
The author is not blasphemous or a sell out. She is saying in her own words exactly what she signed in the contract. She precisely gave them artistic license.
Close your mouth and use your brain. She isn't selling out anything. She is allowing for a better storyline than the one she originally created. That is what a good writter does. Be open for improvement. You're upset about the change but there are may of us who are excited for it.

Thank you for this. You have become my hero in this crazy world of, as someone below said her sister called it - Bangerton! Because Bridgerton it is not anymore. It’s become a badly written soap opera. And the main characters were still ending up together. Many fans were excitedly waiting for Michael ( & John)and Fran’s story. Today I’m pissed that I ever invested my time and love of this show after the train wreck of season 3. Poor Colin and Pen too. Ugh. Part 1 of S3 had some highlights but now….. geez….. you said all that needed to be said. I thank you.
The showrunner NEEDS to be introduced to fanfiction.
No, the showrunner is improving the show and the original author agreed with this change. What is the point of a showrunner if you are just going to regurgitate the book? The reason the show did so well because it didn't copy the book. Queen Charlotte wasn't even in the book and she is literally the only reason I decided to watch the show.
Not me complaining the whole 3rd season about Benedict’s arc likely changing Sophie to Stephan only to find out Michael is now Michaela 😭 I feel like I did it to myself and I apologize to everyone for jinxing it
I’m just waiting for the announcement that Sophie will be a transwoman 😅😬

As a writer myself I would be really ticked off if someone changed or butchered my story to push their agenda.
Julia Quinn gave her “ok” to do this.
I think IF you were a writer and were offered a hefty sum to adapt your books, you would be offered the opportunity to clarify in the contract exactly your expectations. That is exactly what Julia Quinn did. Or else, there would be a lawsuit. Julia is making hella more money now due to the Netflix show. There are tons of viewers now buying her books again. She does NOT sound pissed off to me.
Yeah but I would be like I hate it as well but I needed money. That is what I would say.
You must not be a very good writer if you thought they butchered the story by doing this. This an improvement. And it is not an agenda it is much needed representation. Getting a queer story line that isn't just some fling or has some tragic ended. Anne Lister is a real lesbian woman who existed in this time period, she lived a happy life with her partner until the day she passed. Stories like her are important more important than the topic of Fran infertility issue that ppl so desperate want to hold on to. We already got that plot with the Dukes mother and the queens daughter. Also the original writer was okay with this change. She is just simply a better writer than you who is open to needed change, that is all.
@@rociogarfias9096Exactly. So people should get over it. She okayed it for a reason. This topic is needed. There were people like this who existed in the 1800s. Anne Lister is an example of this.
The second season was AMAZING, and then the third season came out, and it just missed the mark so much. No chemistry between the main leads, too many back stories, etc. I’m disappointed
You know what's funny? The leads actually have chemistry, their promo tour was more Polin than the show. It takes serios skill to write/film/edit in a way that completely ruins that.
And Francesca never even looked at another man until 4 years after John died because she truly loved him. So that ending scene changes the while dynamic of their relationship
Not a fan of Bridgerton but I remember seeing my sister in law just after she finished season three - she was in TEARS and broke down even more trying to explain how beautiful the original story was and how utterly ruined it was now that they're making all these pivotal character changes. So sad that faithfulness to original works and the stories everyone fell in love with has yet again been sacrificed on the alter of these progressive ideologies.
Yes, I had the same reaction. I loved Polin’s book and hated how they adapted it…And same about Michaela, I was so sad to see it….Why couldn’t they come up with an original story? I loved Brimsley and Reynolds, and their story was truthful to the era
This is why I love reading Fanfiction... they help curb the pain and disappointment
@nikd8717 what type of "progressive ideology"? 🤔🤔🤔
The original story was book four and took place when Penelope was 28 and consider a spinster. Hollywoke could not do that because in book threr when she still a teenager Colin says I would never marry Penelope and he go to travel and when he comes back Penelope lost a bunch of weight and they he thinks she hot now. The producers and writers probably freaked the heck out when they heard the detail in the book.
Historical accuracy? The hell is that
Bridgerton was never intended to be historically accurate other than in the look of the time period.
Hollywood is dieing
It’s not that it’s supposed to be completely accurate it’s that it lost all semblance of trying to follow that accuracy, the dresses lost there elegance and became to goddy, and the makeup and other things lost the elegance of previous seasons on top of the plot issues
They lost all historical accuracy when they race swapped Queen Charlotte
Jane Austen in spinning in her grave!
It is more than just this. This show runner made the the whole season feel like a different show.
From someone who LOVED the books and the first 2 seasons, I am done watching Bridgerton! I was so excited for the new season, what a horrible let down.
No one cares. As someone who didn't read the books and literally only decided to watch the show because of queen Charlotte who ironically wasn't even in the books. I am loving this story line. I am all for Michaela.
This author versus Rowling - who would NEVER sell out and always keeps the integrity of her work!!
Rowling added random details after the fact (Dumbledore being gay) that were stupid af, but honestly, she's still very respectable compared to the writer of Bridgerton. At least Rowling actually wrote a meaningful story.
@@ambivelent-artistRowling didn't add gay Dumbledore after. She's said herself that he was always gay since she started writing the books. And it's implied in the later books when his relationship with Grindelwald comes up

Rowling ensures the storyline stayed put … she never would have agreed for a main character to become a different gender. She also wrote in a different era. She allowed for more diversity (maybe due to various pressures) in future adaptations and work.
I would like to share my favorite manga writer Oda Eiichiro. He is the created of ONE PIECE, and he was the main producer for the Netflix series. When the announcements were made, some fans were really worried about it since there is a jinx that live action of a manga does not succeed by a long shot. But some fans said “Oda sensei is the main producer and he has the final say to all things! Trust him!” And Oda sensei himself said “I retook the scenes of the whole series again and again until I was sure of it.” And it turned out to be a success to the fans and now they are in the making of season 2. Also, Oda sensei himself shared that Netflix had offered and even pushed him to include romance between the cremates of Luffy but he rejected them all saying since ONE PIECE is a Shonan manga, he will not draw romance in a direct way to sell to his readers. Really goes to show that these screen writers of Hollywood and the entertainment industry are really out to get to the authors and butcher the important creation. For that, I am glad that Oda sensei has the final say in all of these live action production and would never sell his work.
Even Bridgerton is gay now. As a lesbian, I’m not happy with this either.
I’ll ask this politely: why are you not happy about this? No judgement, just curious.
@@MediaChristianFanatic Easy. People are turning everything gay.
i dont want to be rude, but its kind of ironic that they try to please gay people and even them hate it 😅
@@FireflyKitthere are still many striaght people and couples probably even more than gay people and couples but I guess people wouldn't have a problem with that
@@MediaChristianFanaticas an equally saddened lesbian its because we don’t like implication of cheating (not even emotionally), we don’t like our beloved male lead to become a woman or our female lead to become a whole other person… the writer literally didn’t keep anything from the book beyond the female lead being named Francesca and her husband named john
If only i could drag jess's hair out of the set. Because that's really how i felt the moment i saw Michaela.
I wanted to kiss Jess feet after seeing Michaela. Like finally real queer pair not some fling like what Benedict was having or some tragic relationship that goes nowhere like with Brimsley
Season 3 was the nail in the coffin for me. It was horrendous.
It is ruined. I feel so sorry for the Nicola Coughlan (Penelope) and Luke Newton (Colin). Imagine working on a show for so long waiting for the time when is all about your character and then everything goes bad. Your story is not dealt in the best way, screen time is taken for not imprortant characters and so on..
They did so well. The flaws definitely fall on the editing and writing teams. The camera did not linger on their moments like they did last season and they never gave them their dance. I thought the passionate couple dance was a staple for each couple.
They were perfect. Everything else was bs.
I totally agree with this. They were robbed of their love story…no flashbacks, no build-up. He knew Pen was Lady W before they married and protected her. They emasculated Colin in order to bring out a woman who could have it all resulting in them fighting all of the time instead of loving each other. Nicola and Luke had off the charts chemistry on the PR tour. It’s there they just didn’t allow them enough screen time for us to see it.
The showrunners had no confidence in their lead actress & it showed.
"Allow people to see the character the way they want to see it." Thank you for your wise words Brett. I'll never understand why some plots and stories have to be completely thrown away because of someone's "fun new interpretation from their own experience". Let the audience relate in their own ways.
One of my biggest pet peeve’s with book to screen adaptation is the arrogance of so many show runners and movie producers Who see something great and say, I can do it better the book was popular for a reason. You adapted it because it was popular for that reason and now you’re changing what made it so popular… idiocy and hubris at its finest
It also sucks because all the other things going on with Francesca and Ben have COMPLETELY overshadowed ( in several locations) the stuff happening with Pen and Colin as well which is such a disservice! I LOVED Pen and Colin's story and it was so interrupted because of this insistence to put in random other things that don't serve the show or story!
The 2nd part of this season was rushed and so many characters were destroyed. Colin was super predatory in his deflowering of Pen scene. The entire scene was unnecessary, creepy, and a ridiculous portrayal of a 1st time. Loved seeing an introvert be respected (Francesca) only to have them decide this was just a symptom of her gayness to be corrected. There were obviously gay people in that era but it was hidden. The unwed brother’s storyline captured that sufficiently. And back to Colin, he became insufferable in his jealousy of Pen’s writing and they never really resolved that. They just cut off the conflict with the marriage and we really don’t know if Colin matured or married her out of obligation. Just poor writing and directing this season. They were trying too hard and rushed it.
Yes! Their first time scene creeped me out. It's based on such a disgusting trope in many romance novels, where girls/women are infantilized, clueless, and it's somehow a mark of desirability or mystique for them to be a virgin. While the guy can run around catching syphilis all day.
The hymen and painful first time for women are both a myth. The hymen does not close off the canal, and does not break/bleed for the vast majority of women. If there is pain or bleeding with intercourse, it's probably because of CHILD MARRIAGE from that time, or because of inadequate foreplay/marital grape. Not romantic. Not cute. So glad that trope wasn't replayed in season 2. So grossed out to see it done with Pen in season 3. The absolute cringe.
Imagine taking a gay character from a book and make him straight on screen 😂🤣
I would watch it, just to tick off the Hollywood wokesters.
That's happened a lot in books and writing and media in general and there hasnt been as much uproar about it.
@@pencilfiend Can you name some because I want to read then watch the adaptation.
Francesca’s book story is so beautiful! It isn’t a classic friends to lovers trope. Really sad I will not be able to see the true story come to screen.
My take on this:
As a lesbian and advanced reader myself, I know I can relate to Bridgerton fans as to the current situation between the book series and film series, How? Well, my current favorite book series is 'The priory of the orange tree' book series of 2, the book series also has its long ago - timeline which is actually long before the Bridgerton timeline in fact & I know I would be devastated if on one of the main characters of the book, Ead or Sabran were to have a sexuality change, as their love between each other introduces a whole category in the story and is the pivot of the finale, not having their sexualities that way, would actually have not made the ending possible whatsoever, making the whole book useless to even write. So I understand the part of losing a love story, being sad and dissapointing, but I know that, if the their story is not a vital pivot, it shouldn't really be a huge problem if it is not told ( I would love to know from any Bridgerton fan, if their story is a vital pivot in the whole thing, how?)
& as for the modernized accessories, I believe it was to make the story more modern and not completely vogue to suit today's time & make it easier for non-readers of the book to consume and consider reading the books, I really believe that having those accessories shouldn't be a big deal either if it's not effecting the story & to those who focus on the 'little details' of the timeline that much, then you might as well should be looking into their attire - to see if their made of materials from then, the jewelry - to see if the way it is cut is even a cut that existed then, and the scarecity of them considering the fact that most of the 'ton' was wearing jewels that were very scarce in that time or perhaps not even discovered in that time. Literally the definition of don't peel the orange, if you're not going to eat it. And lastely Brett Cooper, I admire your confidence in the words that you decide to speak, though, I was disappointed to find that you had made a statement that was inaccurate, on the marriage thing, sure Francesca may have been straight in the books, but that's not to say, same sex marriage, wouldnt have been possible in the Bridgerton time line as you stated, in fact it was possible, and socially accepted in the 1600's though it was probably done in private due to judgment against LGBTQ+ associates, for anyone to say false statements is one thing but for anyone to state false statements to boost a perception is another. I honestly think the author would have probably spoken upon this by now and stopped this 'folly', but If there is even going to be a season 4, I believe we should all sit down and wait before we call this show a failure if Francesca and John's story is not a pivot in the story for something big, and perhaps the producers want to introduce something that will blow us all away and satisfy all in season 4, so I hope people stop saying that, this change is to satisfy 'queer people only'. I would love any feedback, as I am one to speak off all perspectives ❤.
While watching S3 I legit thought that Francesa is on the spectrum. I find that a much more compelling story. The nonsense with Benedict was hilarious. It takes one episode to get him on board with the threesome, it lasts for one episode, and in the third episode the woman says she wants to be exclusive and Benedict turns her down. Not looking forward to the next season since they have rewritten the books by having the ton know who Lady Whistledown is. I was honestly disappointed to find out her identity in S1.
Which spectrum are you talking about? Because when I read spectrum and Francesca in the same sentence, my mind went to autism... but maybe that's not what you meant?
@@GabrielaCenturionNeumannThat is what OP meant. that’s what “on the spectrum” means because people don’t like using the word autism for some reason.
Yes people like to use different words to mean the same things in different languages … including English
@GabrielaCenturionNeumann you are correct. I'm never sure if I should say "an autistic person" or "person with autism" so I said "on the spectrum". English is so finicky. The flirting by sitting in silence reminded me of a convo I had with my high school boyfriend. It was something like, "the greatest passion can be expressed with silence as well as with shouting"
@@chatharinahamson9322 Oh, that is so beautiful! As a woman who is in love with a man on the autism spectrum, I thank you for that line
When L.J. Smith signed on with alloy entertainment for her "Vampire Diaries" book series to be turned into a tv show, she ended up losing the rights to her books. That is the only thing that gives me pause when im reading Julia Quinns instagram post regarding the change from michael to michaela. If she is in a similar situation, there might not be anything she can do. Which is a shame because I cant imagine creating a successful book series with characters that are beloved, only to now have a writer from Netflix ruining your story and making your fans turn against you. I honestly think Jess is doing this out of resentment for straight love stories and for envy that an LGBT character was not in the books all along, because apparently Michael is one of the most loved Bridgerton men. I don't think its a mistake she's changing Francescas' story, which is about infertility. I also dont think it's a coincidence that Penelope and Colin, a straight couple, got almost no screen time this season, and instead we had to fast forward through flashes of Benedicts orgy. I hope everyone will not watch the new season. The only power we have anymore is through our actions and our money. A similar situation happened with the Witcher netflix series and people are boycotting the new season. I think we should apply the same thing for the new season of Bridgerton.
Yea I don't think there is anything she can do. Once they went to her with this storyline, she had to go with it. GRRM learned his lesson with Game of Thrones. He didn't have enough say in the last few seasons and it really bothered him. Now he is an executive producer on House of the Dragon and you can tell the difference. The world is 10xs better. Yes, there have been some changes and some fan theories have been proven or not proven. But at the end of the day, it feels very true to the story and characters as opposed to fan service or showrunners inserting their own ideas.
@@crazeegrlproductions that’s not completely true about Game of Thrones. He never finished the books. What else were they going to do but write their own plots? I didn’t like the horrible last season… But apparently GRR Martin gave them the ending.
I know the show is based on the book, however, if you go on tour and say for months that this season is going to be like the book, that the fans are going to see romance, that this is an homage to all wallflowers and so on, fans and book readers will get hyped and excited with the idea and carry on with it.
Also let's not forget all the marketing campaign around the main characters that hyped us into making us believe that there was something between them which i have to applaude because every single step of the way (the looks between each other, the poses, what they were saying to each other etc) was excellently calculated and that brought more hype into the table.
Then the season started and ...... meh. Luke looked amazing and Nicola also but if you are going to put her acrilyc nails, fake lashes, an insanely amount of make-up, a corset that made her waist as tiny as it could possibly get but when you saw it from profile the view was different, it would have been better to made her lose the amount of weight that she lost on the book. Also..... the episodes..... meh. The carriage scene.. meh. The sex scene..... it was as flat as a wall and please let's take into account that for months, we were told that furniture got broken during the sex scenes.... probably due to poor construction instead of the passion that we were believed that they had because there was nothing there at all. Also, there have been scenes from the book that would have been amazing to see (Colin asking for Pen's advise on his writings, the speech he said to her about loving her, the development of his love for her etc). Instead we've got a Colin that fell in love instantly, Pen being a radical feminist (which is now popular these days just to make money) and bunch of bs.
Probably everybody got hyped up during the success of the first 2 seasons and that is why they decided to do what they did.
Everybody cashed their checks and that is it because at the end of the day, we want to get our paychecks and done. The same thing with the author, she cashed her check and done.
Now for Book 4, we are talking about very important and serious issues which it would have been great to show on screen: how an introvert woman has to deal with infertility and loss but instead of that we are going to show something completely different because they need to put something that will bring more money into the table and therefore more hype, more Tiktoks, reels, YT edits etc.
The best thing that you could do is stop supporting this, make the numbers go low and there you'll see how things will get changed. Stop watching if you do not like it, keep reading the books, make as much noise as you want but do not watch the following seasons and move to something else.
Read the books as a teenager and during my undergraduate years. Francescas story was my favorite and no it was not love at first sight for her but for Michael, because Francesca loved John deeply until he died
Am upset they are changing Francesca's story. They have changed benedict's character especially with that threesome... i don't even know the importance of that scene.
In the books he doesn't have the 3some? I just wach the show
@@scarlettfairytail3099I'm not going to say that there aren't scenes, but ones like that threesome? No, there isn't.
It contributed nothing to the story, just filler. Such terrible writing..
@@scarlettfairytail3099 No, book Benedict is straight and is such an excellent self-taught painter that he gains national acclaim. Show Benedict didn't even lift a paintbrush this season because he had a hissy fit the older brother Anthony bought his entry into a top tier art school... after he was already successfully teaching himself how to pain on his own... I think the show mistook book fans' love of intimacy between the beloved/monogamous main characters as being interchangeable with ick like promiscuity, random hookups, and threesomes.
Righttt Fran and Michael's story was my absolute favorite was really looking forward to it
Honestly the whole plot of the book doesn't make sense when it's a lesbian story ..like what about her wanting babies and her infertility ..then there is the fact that they want it to be an open relationship wth
Bet Benedict is going to end up with a man too 😂
I’m sorry but as a queer woman this shit pissed me off
I'm sorry but as a queer woman this shit makes me extremely happy and excited for what they do next season with this couple. A much needed change. I'm so tired of us being the back story and only being some short term fling or some relationship that only ends in tragedy. Time for a good story.
I stopped watching after the first season because that when I read the entire book series and saw huge plot holes and added characters that literally didn't matter to the plot. I was done after that. This is just icing on the cake.
This was the story plot that I was looking forward to. Inclusivity shouldn’t just be subject to LGBT and Diversity. It should include women who struggle with fertility issues… I was looking forward to Francesca’s story. Out of all the Bridgertons, I related to her the most. Her timidness, awkwardness, and not wanting so much attention drawn to her but just the right amount sounded so similar to the type of person that I am. I’m not special but don’t want to feel entirely left out. It’s hard for introverts to get a moment that is just right but we also don’t complain nor force society to accept us and push to accommodate. Introverts move forward with what we have and are given and we are the ones to find a scapegoat to remove ourselves politely without coming off rude even though sometimes it can still be taken as such. It is so rare to see a character like Francesca on screen because the quirky awkward characters take the lead and are the most interesting for most audiences. Francesca was a breath of fresh air and I was excited about her story and meeting Michael. When they did the gender swap reveal, I felt disappointed because her whole story about motherhood and fertility is going to be entirely different. It sucks because that was something I also related to as well- I’ve been struggling to conceive myself and I want to become a mother but now it just feels like this isn’t a topic the new show runner cares for because she just wants to see HERSELF in it. It’s sad that that’s the only inclusivity people consider but other types of women are overshadowed to this day because we aren’t special to everyone. And that’s okay. It isn’t a competition but I think it would have been wonderful to see it play on screen. I know this is getting ahead of the game but I don’t think I’ll be watching Bridgerton after this. I don’t understand why show writers don’t just create their own characters and give them a story that has an arc and shows growth. When you make all these changes and solely focus on the character and putting just yourself in it, it falls apart or just short and doesn’t leave any kind of impact. We’ve seen it happen time and time again… it’s just disappointing.
They spent season 3 telling and making up stories instead of telling Penelope and Collins fully. They messed with Benedict, who I loved. Daphne has disappeared and every time I hear a character say something SHE should be saying, I am irritated. As soon as they introduced "Michaela," that was it. I am out. I read the books 20 years ago. I would like to, again, but am afraid it will tick me off even more! Lol
Pride & Prejudice: DEI Edition
Pride (in justifying degenerates who cheat) and Prejudice (against the original work as well as anyone who's straight/white)
About Benedict, In the books I personally love his story, I feel some scenes are unnecessary.Since S1 I keep hoping that benedict story will change, but they only make it even worse. Thats why while watching S3 I find myself pressing forward. It's also hard to focus on the main leads like there's so much happening with Benedict, Eloise, Francesca, Violet, Cressida, and Mondrich. I love Julia Quinn books thats why I cannot believe that she agree and support this. She even make a statement on her IG post which only make things worse. They completely changed Francesca's story, and it seems they will continue to alter the rest of the seasons 🥲💔
As soon as I heard Michael was gender swapped I finally cancelled my Netflix. Michael was my absolute favourite character in the books and I loved him and Frannie's infertility arc. The end felt so rewarding and I cry everytime I reread it. I always figured that they'd try to make Benedict's Sophie into a trans character because "fans" couldn't shut up about how "gay" he was. Then they put him (the utmost hopeless romantic) into a throuple and that hit the last nail into the coffin of his character. I'm so done with this crap.
It was not “just” that
I was so SO hyped for this season’s storyline, being the season of Colin Bridgerton deepening his already good and developed relationship with Penelope Featherington, for 2 entire seasons they structured this plot for their love to be the most explosive, passionate, romantic one in the series so far… BUT IT WAS SO MID!! SO LAME!! They changed the Colin from the books, making him unsupportive and snappy with Pen, during the mid season both Nicola and Luke, the actors of Colin and Pen, hyped the season up for being the most hot, allegedly they filmed so many spicy scenes together, developed their married live so much, but in reality we got less than two hours total of screen time for their plot in a season of 8 episodes!! Everything was sidetracked to plot lines we didn’t care about at all, mainly the Benedict-in-a-non-committed-threeway one, everything is such a mess, I’m seriously not watching absolutely anything else from Bridgerton, for me, season 3 was the final one…
Totally agree! I was so excited for this season because I loved Colin and Penelope. While watching it, I felt it was more about Benedict being in a threesome. I was so disappointed.
@StarShine2697 I agree. Polin was cheated and the show has deviated so far from the books that I'm done watching this series. As for Nicola's comment, I think she was referring to all of the sex scenes combined (not just between her and Colin). I've zero interest in promiscuity, hook ups, and threesomes... I'm grossed out by Ben's behavior in this regard (I'm convinced he's riddled with STDs as many were at the time), but was supremely disappointed that they forced that onto Colin's character too. They don't understand that lovers of the romance genre care about the committed relationships between the two main characters, not copious and gratuitous sex between random people. Also, the actors that play Alice and/or Will said that most of the intimacy scenes they filmed with each other were cut, so that is likely part of what Nicola was referring to as well. Nicola has debunked rampant rumors that there are any unreleased intimacy scenes between Polin.
I also felt that Polin was super rushed. If you compare this season with Daphne and the Duke's, it's night and day. We saw almost no family or side characters featured in Season 1 other than Anthony. Nicola said she is glad she didn't spend another season having to play Penelope pining over Colin, but we really needed that. We needed to see her pulling away and then Colin realizing his affection. We needed more scenes showing the stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance- from both Penelope and Colin. Penelope is coming out of her depression phase and into her acceptance that she will not marry Colin when Colin is just starting his denial phase. She is honestly not supposed to believe that he really loves her because she has finally accepted he doesn't and has moved on. The scene where he defends her against her mother helps her realize he really does love her and helps her come around.
Also, he is literally supposed to be the most emotional of the brothers and I feel all I got was stoic faces and a couple of highly staged angry tears. They had to say like 5 times how emotional he was. Don't say it, show it! There were literally so many options.
Last, we saw Daphne having sex like 500 different ways with the Duke and only once with Polin, but this season was... steamy? There was no build up to the sex scene. No real attempt to ease into a physical aspect of a relationship after being 'platonic' for so long. Penelope being so willing to share herself physically when she hasn't told Colin the full truth didn't sit right. It felt cheap and messy. Friends becoming lovers should feel so satisfying and authentic, and this didn't.
I fully believe that both Luke and Nicola are good enough actors that this could have been so much better. I genuinely feel they gave it their best and have a strong bond with each other as actors. Unfortunately, the script/plot wasn't there to support them.
her story was my favorite. it explored many themes which you don't normally read in other romance novels. it deals with issues like grief, infertility, child loss, etc. too bad.
To be fair Bridgerton was never really historically accurate costumes wise. Just watch the corset scene from season 1 and ask yourself if people really sinched their waists in an era where the dresses had no waist...
true
100% agree. I’m almost definitely not watching Francesca’s season. But, if they ruin Benedict’s more, then I’m not watching that either. 🤦🏼♀️
I understand that not everything in books can be adapted perfectly but when directors, screenwriters, showrunner etc say “I love this but I want it to be this” is liking spitting on the authors original work so that they can make fanfiction. If you are going to make something from a beloved original work, do not try to make it better because of what you want, it’s about what the audience wants.
There was a old 1940-50s movie about an architect who had to take odd jobs because He would drop deals with companies that wanted to own his designs and then change them. The companies argued it was to appease the people and He argued that the work is the reflection of the individual artist not the consumer base. I suppose books, like fine art, "find their audience" and movie companies should be taking note of that.
I already hated most of the changes they have done in the series and this one is the last straw. NO MICHAEL!!! NOT WATCHING!!!
They have deviated from the books so much there's really no point in even calling it Bridgerton. (I hate what they did to Colin).
Good please don't watch. We are getting a little tired of you whining. Queen Charlotte wasn't even in the books yet she is the only reason many of use decided to watch.
Girl, you said everything!! I was so sad and upset with this nonsense changes! Not only Francesca's, but also Benedict. His character remains flat and I'm starting to get annoyed with it. I won't watch it anymore and I'm gonna stick to the books! The changes they did on Francesca's Nop, I do not accept it😌
Ironically the showrunner was able to relate to Francesca regardless of her orientation which speaks to the storytelling and characterization developed by Quinn. That’s what makes this feel like narcissism. These stories are almost like classics within the genre. Make changes if it furthers the story or adds something truly unique. It not only feels like ticking a box but it will remove important/integral parts of the story.
Frankly I was already on the fence based on the early reveal of Whistledown and the way it rippled to augment so many storylines. Like how is that changing Eloise’s story?
