is this the end of an era? my bridgerton season 3 review

  • Dearest Reader,
The third season is finally upon us . . . and I have to say it was a far cry from the previous ones. Dare I say, disappointing? Much like the lack of diamonds shining in the Queen’s court, my enthusiasm for the future of Bridgerton is dimming.
But what could possibly be the cause of this lackluster entry? Is it because our lovers, Penelope and Colin, feel like minor characters in their own story? Is it the overcrowding of cringey, unnecessary characters plaguing our screens? Or, is it the lack of effort from the studio to make this the finest season of all time? Or, is it due to the deviation from the source material?
Let’s explore this unfortunate phenomena together.
Let me know, dear Viewer, what did you think of the latest Bridgerton season? Were you similarly disappointed, or did you find it worthy to be named the Diamond of all?
    Sincerely yours,
    Madi Miss

This is why having 22 episode seasons are important… every storyline this season was rushed and kinda lacked development between characters and relationships. The only storyline I enjoyed was Penelope growing closer to her mother.

My mom and I were just talking about this. 22 episodes are so needed with shows like Bridgerton. It doesn’t have special effects, like game of thrones or Marvel productions. So they can give us more from the source material and a worthwhile storyline.

If they skipped some of the more than boring and unnecessary storyline (because they don't exist in the book), for example the Mondrichs, there wouldn't be a need for 22 episodes. Actually, if they solely focused on the books with no added plots, I dare to say that 4-6 episodes would be more than enough.

The first two seasons were better written. This new first-time show runner gave the main couple 30 minutes of screen time. It was the most anticipated and built up storyline and they treated it like it was something to just run through to get over with. The showrunner seems more interested in moving along to LGBTQ storylines at the expense of what fans wanted to see as the highlight this season.

I don’t understand why the writers made Penelope so isolated. She doesn’t have Lady Danbury, she doesn’t have a positive relationship with her family, she’s not very close to the other bridgertons. In the books, Penelope has a good support system. In the show it’s depressing how alone she is. Especially with Cressida and Eloise being friends.

Someone timed the actual time Pen and Colin were together. About 50 minutes out of all 8 episodes. So everyone is right that they didn't get to see enough of them. The Mondriches were Simons friends. Simon is not coming back. So they are a fish out of water. I liked Will having the club. This inheritance story is too much. The sequence of when Colin found out about whistledown was all for drama. Book Colin has him find out before he asks Pen to marry him. I liked that. Will they or wont they? Was not likable. They ruined our Benedict. Some may not care about making him bi but to me, he had no spark or passion because he left his art only to do what he always does, go for the fast slutty low women. Tilly was the same only worse. She was a stereotype of a rich liberated sexual woman who had salacious sex. Benedict was the sandwich in her banquet. Francesca meeting Kilmarten and marrying him may have taken away from the main characters. And the coup De gras is Michaela. That rewrites the whole
Love story about Michael who is the hottest guy. I loved their story. It devastated me so much that I forgot about the beautiful love of Polin. Homosexuality was illegal then. It was not safe. And there is a lot of pretending in gay love affairs at that time. You pretend you are who you aren't. Its not fair to the spouse you marry to cover up your gayness. They all deserve better. You aren't happy and the Bridgertons deserve happiness. That story is about adventures in the regency marriage mart. Thats what the books are about. No more, no less. Stay with the book plot. You can change it up some, but don't make it 21st century morals. These writers have destroyed the show for future seasons.

That's not exactly true. Fran's courtship and marriage with John happens off screen in the books. Her book is about her second love, Michael. One reason more they shouldn't have divided season 3 in 50% Polin and 50% Fran and John. 80% Polin and 20% Fran and John would have been better, imo.

I agree with everything you said. I feel netflix wants to push what's going on in our society now into the series which makes no sense because the period was in the 1800's. We don't need so much diversity or the bi sexual scenes since it was not in the open at that time in history. The other stories are definitely fillers for the show and pointless. Concentrate on the main characters instead of deviating from the real story. Colin and Pen should have had so much more of a story to tell instead it was just nothing. So disappointing with season 3.

I would like to also raise a point that Eloise is a VERY BAD friend. She's incredibly self-absorbed and dismissive of her friend's problems. First, Penelope and now Cresida. She dismissed her problems (being forced to marry a guy that could be your grandfather is a very big problem....) and then she abandoned her as soon as she had an opportunity. Which led Cressida to make the drastic choises that she made to fight for her freedom.
This lack of self awareness and so much self-absorption really infuriates me about Eloise.
That said, because things aren't just black and white, I admired Eloise's civility about Penelope when their friendship ended. She wasn't openly hostile, she kept her distance and tried to move on with her life. Her determination to get Pen to tell Colin that she's Whistledown also deserves some positive recognition.

What was/is absent from the series that is always present in the books, the family humor, the banter and closeness. Colin always eating was a staple, their fierce competitiveness. Violet having to the ‘talk’ about sex with her daughters and being uncomfortable, regardless that she had 8 children. Those are the scenes we look for and tell the show runners, yet they continually ignore. All the deviation from the books; Marina being alive and an Featherington relative instead of an Bridgerton, you remove the reason for Eloise to write Phillip. Book spoilers ahead:
It's a good thing you mentioned Marina Thompson. I really really disliked her storyline in season 1 and 2. I hated her so much and on my second rewatch, I skipped all of her scenes.
However, considering where the story in the book goes, she's not unimportant (even though she only appears in book 5, in the prologue) so I kinda understand why they added her in the show. But at the same time, she's now related to the Featheringtons and not to the Bridgertons, so when Marina dies in the book, it's Eloise as Marina's cousin to write her husband Phillip Crane to express her condolences, which develops into a pen friendship, which leads to Phillip to ask Eloise to marry him (as a marriage of convenience), which end in Eloise running off to meet Phillip (because she wants to meet him before she accepts his proposal).
And for now, I can't see at all how this will work in the show and if they leave Eloise a "spinster" or make her "queer" (as many fans want her to be), I'll be even more mad that they added the insufferable Marina plot in season 1 and 2.
Also, when Penelope gets married, Eloise realises that she's now alone and feels like she's missing out in life, hence why she runs off to meet Phillip and is inclined to accept his proposal. It's part of her development that she learns that she wants to be married and have children. She thought she doesn't need all that, but seeing everyone around her getting married and being so happy, and then her best friend and confidant Penelope also getting married and being happy, was the final straw.

Long comment incoming, probably spoilers for the books (Part 1 of my comment, part 2 is in the replys, had to split up my rant):
I was very disappointed by season 3. I have read all the books, so I already have a different view on this than many fans who have not.
I really dislike most of the added storylines. This was already the case in season 1 and 2. Marina Thompson? Hated her! The Mondrichs? Boring! The Featheringtons father/uncle/finance issues? Unnecessary bloat!
Now in season 3... where do I start?
I liked Lord Debling as a character, but found the storyline surrounding him weak, especially since he was simply written off in part 2 without explanation. Why setting up all this rivalry between Pen and Cressida about "who gets Lord Debling", when in the end, nothing comes out of it?
Speaking of Cressida... I'm quite torn on her. I'm not a huge fan of the modern take to give pretty much all villains a redemption arc. Some villains don't deserve one. That being said, I enjoyed that they added some depths and motifs to Cressida's character and even though I am "satisfied" that in the end, she didn't get her redemption arc, they still kinda butchered it.
The weird sibling rivalry between Lady Danbury and her brother.... I don't mind the adding of her brother and I think it's okay to add him for Violet, however, the dispute between Lady Danbury and him was so so stupid. Are you going to tell me that she's been holding a grudge against her brother for 40+ years because of what he - unknowingly (!) - did as a TEN YEAR OLD?!?!?! And then that they resolve the issue within 5 sentences? I couldn't take this seriously, at all. I haven't watched "Queen Charlotte" so I don't know much about the Danbury plotline l, however, I know roughly what happened to her, but it's too ridiculous for her to hold this against her brother. He was ten, ffs.
Polin was so underwhelming. I hated how they changed the narrative that Colin didn't know that Pen was LW before he asked her to marry him. This whole added idea of "Pen trapped him into the marriage" made him look petty. In the book, he knows that she's LW and asks her nevertheless. He is not angry at her for what she did but angry that she put herself in the position to risk being an outcast. He does everything he can to protect her. Also, their sex scene.... I loved their scene in the book, it's one of my favourites, but in the show... It made me so uncomfortable, I couldn't even look. I was squirming in my seat because it felt so awkward. Pen was beautiful, so it hadn't had anything to do with her body (as many think), but their chemistry was off.
Also the Queen crashing their wedding?!?!?! I was watching with my friend and was gaping at her being like "Are they serious? Are they really crashing the wedding?" Can we have one happy wedding scene for once in this show, please?
Another thing was the entire angst-shtick. Colin was angry at Pen, then he forgave her, then he was angry again. It felt stressful. We were robbed of a romantic love story between these two because of that.
Kate and Anthony... Are you going to tell me that Anthony, who's overprotective, would ever agree for his pregnant wife to travel to India? For his child to not be born in England? I 100% believe he wouldn't. Anthony would never. He's absolutely focused on his duty. Ffs, he only wanted to get married in season 2 because it was his duty. Being the Viscount is his duty. To care for his family (this includes his mother and unmarried siblings) is his duty. Anthony would never just leave everything behind to travel for several months with his pregnant wife. They were simply looking for a way to write them out of the plot.

Francesca... I liked her (and I really like the new actress) and I also liked her story with John, but considering it was supposed to be Polins season, it took way too much screentime from the main couple. Also considering that Fran is supposed to have her own season on the future (I assume), I don't get why she practically gets two season focused on her. I understand that they added her love story with John (which, in the books, completely happens off screen), but I still think it was too much screentime spent on this. Especially since they showed how happy and content they are with this quiet, calm version of love, having Fran making a point to her mother that Violet should stop projecting onto her children and accept that not all people are loud and passionate and dramatic and emotional, only to have her being starstruck by... Michaela...
Which leads me to the next point, the elephant in the room, which will anger some people. Why do shows nowadays need a representation of every single minority that exists? I already had my issues with the super diverse cast. The story is set in 1800's England/Great Britain. Set the story in today's time and I wouldn't bat an eye over the diverse cast. But why do we need to take a story that sets place in a specific time period in a specific area and in a specific class, only to push today's political correctness and agenda onto it? Why making this show at all then? If you don't like the world it is set in? That being said, I found myself at peace with the super diverse cast (mostly), but still don't think why we need every single bit of representation. We have a guy in wheelchair, a deaf woman, people claim that Fran and John are autistic/neuro divergent, we even have a vegetarian now, lol. But do we really really need queer stories pushed onto the main characters?
Why did they have to gender swap Michael? Why do they need to make Fran starstruck with John's cousin when originally it's Michael who's awestruck while Fran 100% is in love with and devoted to John (also her reaction after their wedding kiss was a huge let down, implying that she was not really in love and realised that John was kinda lacking (as in: she didn't feel the spark)).
Why do we need to make straight characters queer in an originally straight story? I wouldn't want originally queer characters to be made straight in a tv adaptation. Imagine the outcry if they had made Alec and Magnus from the Shadow Hunter series straight?!?! Why does every story nowadays have to have queer characters? If they naturally fit into the story - yeah, go for it - but here, it simply doesn't. It especially doesn't fit into Fran's story (but we all already now that Jane Brownell turned Fran into an self-insert).
Fran was deeply in love with John and devastated by his death. Also, she struggled with infertility and her deep desire to become a mother. That's the only reason why she decides to go back on the marriage mart. Michael on the other hand, who's been in love with Fran the moment he saw her, struggles with his guilt of being in love with his cousin's wife, for inheriting everything that once belonged to John, for, as he sees it, stealing John's life. Michaela can't do that. She can't steal John's life, because she can't inherit. She and Fran could never get married, they cannot produce an heir (naturally).
Also Benedict being queer is... Unnecessary. Given, it was already hinted at in season 1 when he attended that private party and saw that artist having sex with a man and looked rather interested than shocked, so the moment that Paul guy appeared, I immediately said to my friend "ah, here we go, here we get the bisexual Ben that the woke mob desperately wants".
I don't know why some people desperately want one Bridgerton to be queer. Even the people who were unhappy with the change of Fran's story want Eloise to be queer. Which would make the entire plotline of Marina Thompson, which was added to season 1 and 2, which I hated because I really didn't like Marina, obsolete. Because it's Marina's husband who marries Eloise after Marina's death. If they would make Eloise queer, or even keep her unmarried, there is no need for Marina to die, hence there was no need whatsoever to add her in season 1 and 2. Gosh, I hated that sideplot so much, on my rewatch I skipped all of her scenes.
All that being said: if people really really desperately need a queer representation in a show set in the 1800's... There would have been a natural and not original-story-breaking way for the showrunners to do that. In book 8, which is about Gregory, there appears Lord Halesby, who is supposed to marry Lucy, Gregory's love interest. Lord Halesby is gay and this marriage is supposed to be a marriage in name only, to keep up appearances in society and stop the rumours about Lord Halesby. Why not adding him now, in season 3, make him quite young, like 20 year old, and give him and interesting and intriguing sideplot on how he struggles in the society as a gay man, how he falls in love with a friend, how they try to hide their romance, how they are exposed and his father now forces him to marry Lucy. This story could go on through all seasons, we could keep Lord Halesby as a supporting recurring side character (and finally kick out that boring Mondrich's plot!!!!). Yes, he only appears in book 8, but he is a canonical character in the book universe, also he's portrayed in a favourable light, Lucy actually really likes him and thinks he's a good man. This could have been woven into the show without forcing straight characters to be queer, just for the sake of it.
All in all I only have to say that I wonder why they want to adapt a book series when they change so much and practically rewrite it completely. Do they really like the source material?
      Technical issues:
The make up was so far off - why did everyone suddenly have orange blush on their cheeks? The costumes of almost everyone felt more like Hunger Games Capitol instead of Regency England. Seasons 1 and 2 did a far better job in being kinda historical accurate with a modern twist. But season 3? Absolutely not. I liked Pen's "glow up", but only when she had her hair in an up-do and more of a nude make up. Her last scene with the berry-coloured lipstick and the loose hair was definitely. Not. It.
Then the camera angles. They also felt off. Especially between Colin and Pen. The carriage scene for example. The angle from Colin's view always looked much closer than the angle from Pen's view. Like in one cut it seemed that Polin were 20 cm apart, in the next cut it seemed they were 50 cm apart. It took me out. And it was not only the carriage scene, but also their sex scene.
The cuts, omg the cuts in this season. Why did they have to drag that weird, cringy, unnecessary threesome over several scenes, only showing like 30 seconds of it before switching to another scene. It was so weird. But it was not only the threesome. There were so many weird cuts, it was jarring.
Okay, I'm done now. Sorry for the rant, I could have mentioned much much more, but I think it's too much already^^

    Spoilers for s3 part 2
They kind of need to keep a lot of actors so they are still there for their seasons. I think thats why they moved Colin's season up so they can get rid of pen's family next season. I don't like it either, but I understand why.
Season 2 - my fave book- was as bad. We spent time on lord featherington's arc to keep pen's family and colin, we had benedict with his art stuff, the montrich family again, danbury taking up kate's stepmom place basically, etc all to keep the actors there
Spoiler alert for francesca's book and I guess benedict's too
For me, part 2 started well and got progressively worse.
On the positive side, I loved Francesca. She was such a sweetheart and I liked her relationship with John. I loved Cressida, too. She added a lot to the Whistledown drama.
And the Masquerade ball is coming so Benedict and Sophie are next!
On the negative side, I didn't like how Colin was against lady whistledown because he hated her. I didn't like how Penelope went into a "I'm sorry; I'll do better" spiral (though they couldn't do much about it I guess based on all the things they got her to write about that weren't in the book). I didnt like how the relationship with her family was fixed with 2 conversations.
I HATED Michaela. WTF? Why did they make Michael a woman? And why was Francesca looking at her like that? Michael liked Francesca from the first moment but she was in love with John initially. I feel like Netflix was like :"you need more diversity" and that's why Benedict's trio and Michaela were added.

By changing Michael’s story to a Woman, as well as making Francesca the one who fell in love first changes the whole story of the book when HE was wicked. By suggesting Francesca is not really in love with John is a big NO (that was suggested the way Francesca looks weird during their kiss and the way she looked at Michaela). First chapters of the book showed her struggle in losing the love of her life as well as their baby. There was no question that she love John so much. And the story tackled infertility for women, and how Michael helped her face second chances in love until they eventually had 2 kids. So now they will have to overhaul the whole story of Francesca. Pen's excuses for writing about Colin were a bit gross. She was lashing out at him because she was angry, hurt and jealous, but as you said, that is the sort of conversation that should be kept between the two of them. The conversation they did have about it was great, but also soured by her initial response. She wants him the way she wants him, and didn't like that he changed, yet she's never once bothered to ask him why. Him believing that she lacks respect for him is completely understandable. I know she's a gossip, and a fundamental lack of consideration for other people's feelings and privacy is a given, but he was her friend for a long time. He always protected her, and saw her when nobody else did. What happened in 2x08 sucks, but one incident shouldn't negate all those years. Besides, Pen's intentional, pre-meditated, public attack on him was much worse than Colin's one-off, spur-of-the-moment comment to a limited number of people. All their conversations in S3 have been primarily focussed on her, largely because she let him believe he needed to earn back her friendship, when she'd already gotten her petty revenge. Her crush on him may have been one-sided in the first two seasons, but their friendship never was, until this season. Whether it's because the writers listened to all that toxic, entitled nonsense people kept saying about wanting to see Colin grovel, which is really gross, or for some other reason, that does not make for a healthy dynamic. I mean, she wanted him so badly for so long, but now that she has his love, she cares more about her ego? She'd really choose trashy gossip over the life she could have with him? Really?! Also, you were spot on about Eloise and Colin loyally keeping Pen's secrets, no matter how hurt and angry they were about them. Which is kind of ironic, since Penelope herself has little respect for anyone else's secrets.

I was also disappointed there was not more Pen and Colin in season three. I have only started reading the 2nd book. But I do feel if they are showing bits and pieces of other characters it should be to show the continued stories of the characters who are already matched, or to develop the characters of those who are upcoming. I realize why had they had to have Francesca, even Benedict. But I feel the other family and Cressida were unnecessary to the plot. I didn't like the development of Benedict's relationship(s) and am hoping they do not incorporate that into his season. And if you have now seen the second half of the season, I don't like the direction they appear to be going with Francesca.

I like your dress. I have watched a half dozen or so Bridgerton reaction videos. It's reassuring that so many people are commenting on the same things. Personally, I prefer Season 1. Some complain it adhered to the book too much, but Season 1 was enjoyable. The whole Kate and Anthony was over the top for me. But Season 3 was a hot mess in the worst way. It made me want to read the books and forget the Netflix series altogether. In fact will place an order for the books. Even without reading the books that introduction between Francesca and Mikayla turned my stomach. The showrunner's rationale for the bait and switch is even more apalling. The fact that the showrunner can justify twisting a narrative to serve her warped agenda is a sign I need to stay away from Season 4. That Netflix team does not care one whit about the audience or being in service of form and beauty. They're a bunch of shameless and shameful hacks. They are ideologues posing as creatives.

They actually had more string quartet covers of pop songs this season compared to any of the others (S1, S2, or Queen Charlotte), with a total of 13 covers across Part 1 and Part 2. However, I do really think this season, more often than not, used these covers largely ineffectively, to the point where some of them (abcdefu, Dynamite, Jealous, and Thunder) were barely played and also quite low in the mix, making them hard to hear or appreciate. I feel like there were only a few really solid musical moments this season (Happier Than Ever, Give Me Everything, and Yellow were my favorites), whereas pretty much every song (and how it was used) hit for me in S2.

I am sorry, I have to disagree with your main point of criticism. I am a firm believer that you cannot make the show a carbon copy of books, as you cannot focus it all on one couple. Each season leads up to the next. Colin and Penelope's story in season 3 wouldn't have been possible if we haven't seen them grow closer together since season 1. Eloise's story wouldn't have been possible without introducing Marina and Sir Crane. Just like that we wouldn't have been able to get whoever is coming next, whether that is El, Frannie, or, most likely, Benedict, without giving them anything of substance in the previous season, and this one.
I can understand the side characters' plots and added characters like Lord Debling and the Mondriches, but Bridgerton the show is about Bridgertons, all of them at once, and not only one couple at a time. Without all these side plots each season would've felt unnatural and out of nowhere 🤷‍♀

    • @madimiss
      @madimiss  Před 9 dny +6

I should have made myself a bit more clear, I liked it when the other seasons changed it up a bit, but this season just felt like it was too much change.
I agree that the showrunners had to set up the other character stories, but it felt super bloated this season.
I just wish that we had the part 2 plot the entire season if that makes sense.

We didnt even get nlan ending with him like we did with Marina .Marina will die so that Eloise can take over but at least we saw her story . Benedict had nothing this season . Lady Tilly? Who is she ? We dont know her other than she likes bisexual sex .

You know what's helped me? When a beloved book is adapted for the screen, I remind myself that as long as the adaptation serves the original material, it can stray. It's a different mode of storytelling.
That said, reasonable people can disagree about whether a show serves the material well enough.

I agree there was a tone shift. The first part was more slow and focused on them and the second half focused on Lady Whistledown. I have to admit, I like the second part way more. But, if I were Collin, I don’t think I would be happy with Penelope either.

I think you're missing the point of the show . if you've watched other review points, you may understand the TV storyline better.. (the books are just a somewhat storyline) what are you going to think about when the characters are changed in gender or ideas ..

Season 3 was overall the best of the three series in my opinion. I found the obsession between Kate and Anthony rather cringy and unhealthy. And still find it that way. The condition of women's rights during the Regency period was appalling. If you are interested to learn about it,the movie and don't like to read, The Duchess, is a good example.Cressida did have it difficult, perhaps more difficult than Penelope, with the exception that she did have her mother's support and her family was financially sound. Penelope had neither. And Penelope did something about it and Cressida did not. She tried to take credit for something that was not hers, even if she did not have the ability to do it. Cressida was cruel, and took joy in embarrassing people who she perceived to be lesser. She did not do this to other she saw as her equal. She did not have the courage. Pick on the less fortunate. Never any excuse for that. Penelope on the other hand could be wicked usually when she saw herself as saving or helping other people. Not all the time but usually. And she regretted it. Cressida never regretted anything. She saw it as her right. You can't help but pity her. However, she is likely the most unlikable person in the series and I would not be sorry if they removed her character.
