During the Angolan border war many South African troups were based in Grootfontein and Katimo Mulilo and other places in the north of Namibia. The Afrikaners from Namibia have been there long before the 90s or apartheid they settled in the 1800s.

Grootfontein = Big fountain or great spring. In Namibia there are no specific towns for certain people, we live together as one in Namibia and 70 to 80% of the population is fluent in Afrikaans. just for information there are many interesting tourist spots around Grootfontein such as the Hoba Meteorite is one of the tourist attractions in the area. It landed about 80,000 years ago

My wife is Afrikaans and the language developed as Flemish and Scandinavian sailors working on Dutch ships traded and intermarried with the indigenous khoikhoi people who inhabit present day southern Namibia and southwestern South Africa.
Later on there was a strong influence from Malay and a smaller influence from the French Hugenots (Christians escaping persecution) in 1688.
That is why Afrikaans populations look anything from blond blue eyed to very dark.
According to government classifications in South Africa and Namibia approximately 60 percent of Afrikaans people are classified 'coloured'/mixed race and approximately 40 percent are classified as 'white'.
In reality they had the same ancestors.
