This is deeply touching. Gould's humming... I missed it even for that brief moment of not-truly sacrilege near the end! James Rhodes is lovely, so talented and deep, no hint of disingenuousness. Glenn Gould's piano seems delighted to make his acquaintance, as Mr. Gould most certainly would have been.

Love this. Huge Gould fan, but I had not heard of James Rhodes. Thanks for the introduction. The depths in exploring classical music are so deep. Excellent, self effacing, interviewer. You can tell he is passionate about the music.

He played the piece which Gould played in such a way to upset Lenny Bernstein. Infamous recording.

So this is NOT CD318, the piano we all know from his recordings (except for the last Goldberg Variations which were recorded on a Yamaha).

You can almost hear Gould spinning in his grave at the thought of someone playing Puccini on his piano. But Rhoades is a good chap and a fine player regardless.

Imagine if was given the chance to sit on "the Chair". Personally, I would give anything just to touch it.

Did Gould own, outright, more than one Steinway? Clearly not CD 318, then what is this? Curious!

Such a funny choice, Brahms' Concerto :-) Gould and Bernstein would be probably pleased ;-)

This is not CD318 it is in the NAC, I don't think. This must be one of the ones he used after his heart was broken with it. Goldberg Variations were recorded on CD318.

It wasn't, actually. The '55 Goldberg was recorded on a Steinway, yes, but one of 4 that was chosen by Gould from the Steinway Hall basement on 57th Street. That was the CD 174, which he didn't have for long. The CD 318 was from Eaton Hall and not yet in Gould's possession. And the '82 Goldberg was recorded on a Yamaha CF II. Recordings like the English Suites and just about everything from the early 60s onwards was indeed recorded on the CD 318.

There's something disingenuous about Tom Power. But, it's wonderful to see and hear James Rhodes.

His piano was like....WHAT?...a baby 1 year old piece?....

  • @militaryandemergencyservic3286

Mr Rhodes: Hello piano. Piano: hello. Mr Rhodes: who is better Gould or Gulda? Piano: Gulda. Mr Rhodes: but you are Gould's piano! Piano: actually I am not, nor have I ever been - people pretend pianos were owned by either famous pianists or famous composers when they were not at all. It's very common. It makes them a bit of money and gives the owner a certain prestige. Mr Rhodes: oh, I see...

No. I suspect that is what Tom Power was trying to distract Rhodes from at the beginning of the video. It is one of Gould's practice pianos. I'm trying to figure out which one.

Brahms first D Minor Piano Concerto. The first movement is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever created. Brahms got hissed if the stage when he debuted it in Leipzig. I️ would love to hear Rhodes perform the entire thing.
