So, the actors' spoken "elements" have to fit the intended story and substories. This movie's actors "speaking and mannerisms" was about as authentic and "Brilliant" as you can get! Take it to the bank, this is what "Chicanos" from the era spoke and behaved like. The racial / ethnic conflicts between Blacks and Chicanos back then was real and still in effect to this day. Overall, the movie is 1000% as authentic as you can get for a movie....Take this to the bank! I retired from 20 years prison mental health services in a Southwest State.

Popeye was a bit over exaggerated and not my fav character in the movie. Trust me back then a 13 year old was a man. 1st friend was shot and killed in 1973 going into high school many more followed. Only way out was the military or move away. Most joined the Navy or Marines so they could be close to home.
My mom used to say this all the time growing up so to see it used in that situation was awesome lol if she got it from this movie she just got a lot cooler 😂

Spanish is as common as English here, so that was certainly an asset. My Spanish still sucks, but I can communicate enough with folks who know a little English.

Brings back memories. In 93 I was a freshman in HS and worked at a movie theater in the Bay Area. Our theater had this movie and Menace II Society playing at the same time. The crowd was always lit and there would be a fight in the lobby once in a while. Both movies are great!

My brother and I can play out the whole flick...well at least the dialog!! Once for an entire school summer vacation (remember those?) I put this VHS (remember those) ina VCR (REMEMBER TH...u get it) and played and rewinded that damn near 4 hour recorded from another (remember ...how hard it was to record a film to share...now there's a button 4 it) VHS...i think or it was on PPV...and played it over and over...film finishes to the end of the well film inside then rewind on its own & play it over on repeat ...and over and over allllll summer long til i could explain prison politics at 8 years old lol and it is very realistic especially in the 70s-90s Cali jail system...tbh my favorite movie EVER and it's so underrated with terrific acting...superb cast...brilliant director...& an amazing script & u got the 90s Godfather...

My brother and I can play out the whole flick...well at least the dialog!! Once for an entire school summer vacation (remember those?) I put this VHS (remember those) ina VCR (REMEMBER TH...u get it) and played and rewinded that damn near 4 hour recorded from another (remember ...how hard it was to record a film to share...now there's a button 4 it) VHS...i think or it was on PPV...and played it over and over...film finishes to the end of the well film inside then rewind on its own & play it over on repeat ...and over and over allllll summer long til i could explain prison politics at 8 years old lol and it is very realistic especially in the 70s-90s Cali jail system...tbh my favorite movie EVER and it's so underrated with terrific acting...superb cast...brilliant director...& an amazing script & u got the 90s Godfather...
