    I completely missed the *MANUAL FOCUS CLUTCH* on this lens, please just skip 2:39 - 3:11 part of this video. It has great mechanical focusing. I'm very sorry about that :(
    Also take a look at my *Sony A7 III vs Panasonic S1* comparison - bit.ly/A7IIIvsS1

    • @DavidHodginsPhotography
      @DavidHodginsPhotography Před 5 lety

      You also mentioned "clickless aperture". I believe this lens has an option to turn that on or off. So it can be clicked OR de-clicked through camera settings. It was a Panasonic rep that told me this, so perhaps it's a production firmware option added later?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  Před 5 lety +1

      No, there is no such option.

    • @MichaelSchagen
      @MichaelSchagen Před 5 lety

      Actually, your review is the only one indicating that switching between af and mf can be done from the body. This is especially important if you e.g. want to have the lens in mf to avoid unexpected focus changes during a video recording, but want to switch to af briefly if needed, eg by half-pressing the shutter during the video recording. So i assume such a scenario is also possible with this lens?

    Thanks for a superb review! After thinking really long and hard, I finally got this to replace my much loved Olympus 12-40mm. I know this is bigger, but boy it's so versatile and suits my needs for primarily indoor shooting. And the photos it takes, is just beautiful, with a certain "magical" quality - reminds me of the Voigtlanders. Initially I thought it would be silly for me to get such a big and heavy lens, until I tried it on. What sold me was how light this lens was! Once I felt the (relative) light weight, I thought this lens will be on my Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk3 permanently! I call it "The Prime Zoom" lens :) thanks again for your review.

    Unique zoom lenses is THE strongest side of MFT! I switched from FF to MFT in 2024, bought some top zooms (and one regular) and got a system that gives BETTER results then my previous FF system with mediocre lenses (line 24-105/4 shown here). I am not using this lens though, I preferred Oly's 8-25mm/4, but I am hunting for Pana 25-50/1.7 on used market, it is a very rare lens to be sold used...

    I can't think anyone who has said anything less than stellar things about this lens.
    The sharpness is unbelievable. I downloaded sample RAW images of a production model used with a G9 and was blown away by not only the color rendering, but sharpness. Unbelievable I was looking at images this sharp from a zoom lens.
    f1.7 is a lifesaver. I do lots of indoor event photography and at f/2.8, you are really struggling to get a good shot without a flash. This lens solves that problem. Easy. The number of 'keepers' just quadrupled.
    I've never been this excited about a lens. With all the other features of this lens, especially the video-friendliness of it, this may be the best, versatile lens out there. I hope to have mine in September.

Regarding the lenses, I can't help you much there, I haven't tested too many Fuji lenses, but if the money isn't issue 56mm F1.2 will be the best portrait lens and of the two 23mm lenses will be good for street photography.

I was able to buy both of them for almost 20% less of the price of the 10-25mm... Please make a comparison between the 8-18 and/or the 12-60mm, but to my mind it can`t be so much better that it is worth to spend another 1999 EUR. For street fotography the 10-25 seems just to big for me. The 12-60mm has way more zoom range at half the size and it is having IOS and F2.8 to F4 is not that bad. Hey, quick question: I own a GH5 and the 12-25mm f2.8 lens. That lens supports Dual I.S., but the 10-25mm doesn't, as you mentioned. I also use a couple vintage lenses, which are completely manual, and when I turn on my GH5, the camera has me manually put in the focal length so that it can stabilize the sensor accordingly. The difficulty comes when using manual zooms - if I set the focal length to 100mm for my 100-300mm lens, then zoom in past 100mm, the sensor starts warping the image, and if I want to use the 200mm or 300mm length, I've gotta turn the camera off and then on again and reset the focal length.
    So my question is, because this is an electronic lens, does it communicate its current focal length automatically to the camera so that the sensor stabilization doesn't get messed up?

    The Sigma is a good bit larger and feels an awful lot heavier. Great combo and very sharp, but the AF is really twitchy, especially wide open. That’s a combination of factors that has got me contemplating acquiring the Panasonic somewhere down the line, even if it is only equivalent to f3.4 in FF terms. I thought it interesting to hear a Panasonic guy conceding that (he actually said f3.5 underplaying it a fraction). But there again they now need to highlight the benefits of their S series.
    As a fan of both low light and subject isolation, the combination of a fast short zoom and the mind bogglingly good IBIS in the G9 has got me to stick with the mft format as my main system a while longer.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  Před 5 lety

      They could probably make faster zoom if it wasn't ultra-wide on wide end. Sigma with speedbooster is F2.4 equivalent. It is far from what you can do with F1.4 full frame lenses, M43 is not the most suitable system for that.

    • @ChrisWilliams-nf8kl
      @ChrisWilliams-nf8kl Před 5 lety

      The Hybrid Shooter
      Yes of course - it’s only f1.2 in comparison to the 10-25’s f1.7. F2.4 for overall light and DoF profile compared with the 35mm format sensors. The fastest (manual) native lens I own is f0.95, which is still only f1.9 equivalent.
      But for my own practical purposes IBIS can make up for some low light deficiency and for subject isolation the ‘gap’ is at shorter focal lengths (usually indoors) for people shots. The exotic glass on the larger formats gives ultra-compression, which can be nice, but isn’t an essential. Besides which at a certain point it needs judging very precisely to get a necessarily very precise focus point. Add to that you tend to lose more sharpness and with a reflex camera make sure your lens is accurately calibrated - not an issue with mirror less.
      I find for instance that for a tight portrait, something like the 45 f1.8 (90/f3.6 equiv) is more than adequate to focus on eyes -fully open you’re getting a decent amount of blur by the ears...

    Is there any alternative to that lens in FF systems? I mean very fast zoom with constant apeture, that starts around 20mm equiv. and ends at around nifty-fifty? I need a lens to film a choir in dimly lit interiors. It turned out that for rectilinear lens I cannot go below 20mm equiv. as faces at the edges become stretched to much, so anything wider makes it a waste of glass. However 24mm is not wide enough in many tight spaces. Also sometimes it necessary to zoom in to well over 35mm when you have to shoot say from a balcony or focus on a soloist. It also has to be perfectly sharp edge to edge. I am looking everywhere and cannot find anything like that. Am I missing something? It could be F4 FF if used with dual ISO camera, but I guess I simply cannot afford such a body, so I am wondering wether I should not stick with my GH5S and jus buy this lens.

    Very nice review! I have two questions regarding this lens as I consider getting it for my GH5S.
    1. Do you have to set it or GH5S up somehow to make it AF continously reliably? I watched Gelard Undone's review and it presented terrible C-AF performance in videos and worked very well in photos. Then someone commented that had problems on GH5 but no problem on G9 and said it may be due to 2.5 firmware on GH5. What are your experiences in that regard?
    2. I want to mount it on my Moza Air 2 gimbal with GH5S with grip and semi cage. I guess Moza Air 2 will handle it easily (as for my arms I am not so sure). But I want to as about balancing as the lens protrudes while zooming. Usually one wants to balance zoom in the middle of focal length. But since it is a bit longer at 10mm, shortens to its minimum at 13mm, and then it dradually protrudes through 17mm and further, could I simply balance it at 10mm? What are your experiences in that regard?

    • @TheHybridShooter

      AF is generally OK on GH5S with default settings. More important are area settings. 1-area or custom settings are much more reliable. I probably wouldn't you Panasonic AF for something that will be shown in cinema, but it is not bad.
