  • Ali Usman Qasmi comes back on The Pakistan Experience to discuss his new book, “Qaum, Mulk, Sultanat” - on this episode we do a deep dive in the 1950s in Pakistan; how was Pakistan turned into an Islamic State?
We discuss Ayub Khan, The National Anthem, the Indian Citizenship Act, the notion of the Nation State, Establishment's narratives and Imran Khan taking over the Establishment's narrative.
After the trauma of mass violence and massive population movements around the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, both new nation states faced the enormous challenge of creating new national narratives, symbols, and histories, as well as a new framework for their political life. While leadership in India claimed the anti-colonial movement, Gandhi, and a civilizational legacy in the subcontinent, the new political elite in Pakistan were faced with a more complex task: to carve out a separate and distinct Muslim history and political tradition from a millennium long history of cultural and religious interaction, mixing, and coexistence.
Drawing on a rich archive of diverse sources, Ali Qasmi traces the complex development of ideas of citizenship and national belonging in the postcolonial Muslim state, offering a nuanced and sweeping history of the country’s formative period. Qasmi paints a rich picture of the long, arduous, and often conflict-ridden process of writing a democratic constitution of Pakistan, while simultaneously narrating the invention of a range of new rituals of state-such as the exact color of the flag, the precise date of birth of the national poet of Pakistan, and the observation of Eid as a “national festival”-providing an illuminating analysis of the practices of being Pakistani, and a new portrait of Muslim history in the subcontinent.
Ali Usman Qasmi is Associate Professor of History at Lahore University of Management Sciences.
The Pakistan Experience is an independently produced podcast looking to tell stories about Pakistan through conversations.

It applies to persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who entered India before December 31, 2014, and fast-tracks their citizenship process from eleven years to five. By 14 minutes into the discussion, it is very clear that the guest has no clue about CAA and the reforms that are being made. He talks about how the CAA excludes Muslims, however, he's not clear on what are they excluded from. In fact, very early on, there is a reference to that, but then he pivots and gives it a communal ring. The fact of the matter is, CAA will ensure non-Muslims are prioritized in getting Indian citizenship when applying for citizenship through the asylum process. To the point that Muslims are oppressed in Pakistan, why should that be an Indian problem? After a Muslim state was requested in 1947, why should India be bothered by how Pakistan has chosen to deal with their own Muslim population. The CAA is a response to the genocide that has happened to non-Muslims in Pakistan and acknowledges the problems that those communities face in Pakistan. Beyond that, why would India get involved in Muslims fighting amongst themselves in a nation carved out for them?

He says that Pakistan is homeland for Muslims. This has been legalized by the constitution of Pakistan. The population of Hindus, Sikhs and other minorities has been reduced from 23% in 1947, post-independence, to now 1.6% through killings and conversions. Why should Muslims of these 97% Muslim population nations come to India as it beats the theory of partition. India has to plan it's budget on certain data which even a backward thinking nation like Pakistan has legalized through NADRA. Now it has to enforce CAA, UCC, NRC and NPR for its own good.

Secondly Muslims today form 19% of the Indian population making them to be the second largest majority and NOT a MINORITY. Other religions which are less than 2% are minorities but they hate to call themselves as minorities, but it is only crybaby Muslims who despite getting maximum concessions want more without contributing anything as they only produce children and don't send them to even schools always blaming the government. I have seen Muslim in this comment section justify it why do you need temples in Pakistan..
In 2014 the organization, the All Pakistan Hindu Rights Movement (PHRM), published a survey report. The survey report found that 95% of the temples present in Pakistan since 1990 were destroyed or damaged. Out of the 428 places of worship, only 20 remained operational while 408 temples were converted either into commercial properties or into residential establishments. Out of the 20 temples, 11 were in Sindh, 4 in Punjab, 3 in Balochistan and 2 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Babri Masjid demolition in India only hastened the pace of temple demolition across Pakistan and Bangladesh. Around 1,000 temples were alone targeted or destroyed in Pakistan and 2014 PHRM survey findings continue to reflect in 2021 as well. From 20 operational temples in 2014, Pakistan now only has 13 temples managed by ETPB.

well it's hilarious when we see muslim pointing out isreal about the killing and Palestine or even Rohingaya or kashmir .. While the same won't say a word about the virtual annihilation by killing forced migration of non Muslim community in islamic country.. Where the native population is refused to below 5% in some places below 1% like afghanistan Pakistan Indonesia even all meddle east
Have you ever asked why are the population of 31 islamic majority country have 95% + muslim population.. 39 have 88% +
Why is it that it is impossible for non Muslim to live in these islamic country.. The Persian left for india..
The Afghanistan lost it Buddhist monastery
But how many islamic country condemn the virtual inhalation of sikh from afghanistan who were 6 mn in '71 .. And less than 100 left today.. Or the forced conversion and marriage of hindu and Christian under age girls in Pakistan.. The inhalation of Ahemidia in Pakistan Indonesia and kurdistani mens and thier girls turkey syria Iraq Iran.
UAE and Saudi Qatar treatment of its labour is like trash. As per the islamic laws and Kafala System. Where labour were your property or slave ..
even with your pride of allhamdulillah there are no non Muslim tribe in Somalia or 97% of Pakistan or More than half the countries in the Middle East-North Africa region have populations that are approximately 95% Muslim or greater. These include Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian territories, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Western Sahara and Yemen.

There is a concession to Religious minorities in CAA. Reasons cited are,
    1. they were once the citizens of this undivided nation,
    2. Pakistan doesn't has a good track record for its minorities.
    3. They were given assurances by the Gandhi and Nehru to stay back, and there may not be the discrimination as said by Jinnah, so it was an error from State,
    4. Its religious persecution, Shia and Ahmadis are Muslims,
    5. Those days the population was not much so accomodation was easy, now it would open the floodgates if everyone allowed also Pakistanis do not enjoy good reputation here and the worry is if muslims come, they may come for their agenda of terrorism and ghazwa e hind. This argument has gained strength overtime with incidents across globe by Pakistanis, be it Europe or US. Infact popular belief is even Gulf nations are these days not comfortable with Pakistani citizens.
    6. The point made by the Govt was, why would a muslim in Pakistan would want to come here when he used all mean to have his separate state with religious identity, rehna tha toh partition kyun kar waaya.
    7. Common man is convinced saying Pakistanis curse indians day and night for Tashaddud on muslims and kashmiris by Indian majority, so anyways why should they be bothered to come here or be discussing it as we are already are seen as oppressor, so gaali bhi dena hai, goli bhi chalani hai aur aana bhi hai?
    8. Indian Muslims have been convinced that it has nothing to do with them, so why why worry.
    9. Some people say, we should not allow anyone to come, irrespective of religion, we already are in the cusp of population explosion.

Are we not allowed to welcome our brothers and sisters who are being persecuted in the same land where they have been living for more than 5000 years by a religion which wasn't even there 1400 years ago.

They were rounded up and sent in trucks. some of them had never seen Afghanistan, born and bought up in Pakistan but kicked out. You couldn't accommodate a fellow Muslim brother with citizenship.

I think you guys haven't read CAA. What is happening to this world? Come on it is just a 2 page document, "Please people read the law". It provides fast track citizenship to defined non-muslims living in persecuted adjacent nations of India. Every person other than persecuted defined minority can still get Indian citizenship but has to apply just like any other foreigner in a normal way. (for example Adnan Sami)

Conversion of hindus into muslims began in Sindh starting712 AD and expanded to present Pakistan over the next 1200 years.
