Desert Rose was originally sung by Sting and Algerian singer Cheb Mami. It was a very popular song worldwide in 2000, and he even performed it during the Super Bowl pregame show the next year. Sting says it’s “a song about longing, a kind of Sufi idea - romantic love as an analog for the greater love of God.” It was inspired by the Dune novels and the 1984 movie, Dune, where Sting played Feyd Raitha.
I don’t know the exact translation of the Arabic part, and some of it is repeated.
But he’s been looking a long time for his loved one, and “my life is for you” and no other.
The night in 2022 I saw Faouzia perform, there were technical difficulties, and she sang it without microphone or monitors with keyboard accompaniment. She absolutely charmed the 200 people in the audience and her singing has gotten much better since then.
