Herbie was one cool car I thought it was for real

It was. 7 cars were used in the filming, but the one we think of racing around was a 1963 VW Beetle race-engineered by EMPI to have a Porsche 356 Super 90 engine (a flat-4 direct precursor to the 911's flat-6), Porsche finned brakes, Koni shocks, and uprated front anti-roll bar and Empi rear camber compensator, and would do 115mph/185km/h. What they built for this movie was *actually* very cool car.
