    After your review on the 2i2, I was set on getting it. But when it came time to get all my home studio equipment, Guitar Center was lacking and I ended up getting this 2i4. Very happy to hear a positive review on this one!

    Thanks Dave for a great review & tutorial. I've been using one of these for months without really knowing what I was doing, randomly pressing the Pad and +48v buttons and tweaking all the knobs and hoping for the best. I though it was about time I learnt how to do it and thanks to you I'm a tiny bit older and a big bit wiser. Thanks buddy.

      I'm using a MBP late 2008 C2D with 8gb RAM. I don't own any NI kit.If you are using Mavericks or Yosemite the Apple Core Audio detects the 2i4 without any drivers etc etc... Just a USB 2 connection and it'll work. You might need to check the Audio Midi SetUp in the utilities folder. I make sure everything is 96khz sample rate via the controller, Audio Interface and Logic X.

    If you ran your intstrument through a "pod" style preamp, would it have the same utility as a DI box? or would you still have issues with clipping as if you just ran in instrument directly into the interface?
    Love your videos by the way. Great for beginners just getting into this stuff, such as myself.

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 9 lety

      Zack Margrif My guess is that it depends from brand to brand - but it's definitely possible. DI boxes are not complex but they are often omitted from interfaces so the company can deliver at a target pricepoint. Just to be clear the DI box doesn't eliminate clipping so much as "prepare" the signal for the mic preamp. For a more in-depth discussion check out my page here: www.basic-home-recording-studio.com/direct-boxes.html
      And thanks for the kind words - I'm glad the videos are useful to you. - david

    So I'm looking to get some monitors soon and I'm really not sure if the 2i2 or any other interface would suit me best because I'm not looking for recording equipment just something to get the sound from my computer to the monitors. Any recommendations or feedback on this decision??

  • @danieljwillen1993
    @danieljwillen1993 Před 9 lety +1

    Great video Dave! I have two questions. 1) Does the interface act as a DI box itself, to where if you were to mic a high gain amp a DI box wouldn't be needed? and 2) If you were to mic a guitar cab and not have to use effects at all with the DAW, would latency be an issue at all?

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 9 lety

      ***** Thanks man! 1) Yes there is a DI box built in - but I always recommend using your own. Not a 200 dollar one either, something around 30-40 bucks will be just fine. 2) yes - if you apply effects outside your software it will always be quicker... but you lose the ability to edit it afterward. If you're sure you have the sound you want (it sounds like you do) then it's a great option. have fun!!

      @wltr2302 Před 9 lety

      Basic Studio Dave hey how does an electric guitar connect to it? can I use a guitar pedal along with it? finally, does this need studio monitors or can use headphones alone?

    • @danieljwillen1993
      @danieljwillen1993 Před 9 lety

      I'm not Dave, but you can mic a cab and use the xlr from the mic and plug it into the interface, or just use a standard guitar cable and plug directly into it. Yes, you can use pedals. You can use headphones, but honestly from my experience getting the best sound to hear from what you record possible good monitors work much better. I hope that helps.

    • @wltr2302
      @wltr2302 Před 9 lety

    • @danieljwillen1993
      @danieljwillen1993 Před 9 lety +1

      That will work, but some eq'ing would may be needed. Normally using the headphone jack is for quiet practicing to not bug people around you. Using that for recording wouldn't sound as lively as micing a cab, but it will work. You're welcome :) It is always a pleasure to help people.

I am currently thinking of buying this model but I am still unsure if I should go with this one or opt for a more expensive, but probably better model. • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 10 lety +1

    Great video. Just one question.. You said the phantom power switched on does both input channels so does this mean i can not use a no power dynamic mic at same time as a phantom powered dynamic mic? As it will make both channels phantom and mess up my dynamic mic that doesn't need phantom. Tar

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 8 lety

      +dazscrivo Hi - dynamic mics don't require phantom power - only condenser mics. You can use this without damaging a dynamic mic, but for other types of mics (such as ribbon) you'll want to be careful. Thx for watching - david

    Sorry mate, I was interested in buying the 2i4,
    But... I can distinctly hear CLIPPING ISSUES from minute 9:20 on...
    I've read many articles on clipping issues concerning this soundcard.
    What do you think of this?

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 10 lety +1

      9:20 on isn't clipping issues... that's just me singing. I'm not sure what you're hearing but I promise actual clipping sounds much much worse than my singing voice.
      Also clipping is a function of setting the preamps incorrectly (operator error) and not a characteristic of the interface itself.
      I haven't read any articles on the 2i4... instead I've used it myself and it's a very nice unit that I very much recommend.

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 10 lety

      subhasish christche You'll have to record 1 of them at a later time. Such as recording guitar and keyboard, then vocals after. Even with MIDI, you'll need to connect the "line out" of your keyboard to a mic preamp. Here's more info on how MIDI works:

    This is a very simple question to everyone else but Ive yet to find and answer what adapter do I need so I can connect my headphones into an interface I just bought the 2i2 its not here yet but I notice in the pics the headphone jack is much bigger than the norm so I was wondering what attachment I need to purchase

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 10 lety

      You need a stereo headphone adapter like this:
      www.amazon.com/Planet-Waves-Female-Stereo-Adapter/dp/B0002E51CQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1398438067&sr=1-1&keywords=1+4+1+8+stereo+adapter

      +Basic Studio Dave Does the unit provide adequate amplification for long periods of headphone listening with decent headphones. • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 9 lety

      Guy Dude Not exactly - let's break it down. MIDI out is really not a useable signal on it's own (such as a line out). So I don't think that counts. As for the rest, you can use unbalanced RCA out 3 & 4 then either RCA out 1 & 2 OR balanced line out 1 and 2. So there's really only 4 useable audio outputs on this one. Hope that was helpful! Thx for supporting the channel.

      Or cable like this - c1.zzounds.com/media/fit,2018by3200/quality,85/c151c9a38c3db001da4dfbab364fa815-aa2ced4c73a106aeb96868c2df4d3fc6.jpg one in input 1 and another in input 2.. I've been doing production without interface and this confuses me a bit regarding the turntable connectivity (I have an phono powered amplifier btw)

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 10 lety

      ayevelins Yes that should work nicely - but if you're looking to go the turntable route, this may be a better tool for the job:
      www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007PLBAE2/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=211189&creative=373489&creativeASIN=B007PLBAE2&link_code=as3&tag=bashomrecstu-20&linkId=VZNUWBEOGRONQOVT
      If you don't need the mic preamps but only want to convert your analog to digital for recording purposes that might be a better solution. UnfortunateIy, I've not had much personal experience with the DJ side except for the Twitch Novation controller (which is sweet btw).

      Basic Studio Dave Thanks for suggestion, that's a neat thing with RCA's already there. But since for now I do more production than live sets or DJ'ing it's more exciting the fact you can add mics and instruments to 2i4. + the RCA outs makes it easy to connect mixers in future and you can add turntables there.
      All these considerations let me to buy one today - I hooked to turntable and errythang's just fiiiiiiiine. I'm happy ((:

      Wow!!! 2 really great options. You can't go wrong… but if I HAD to choose I'd go 2i4. It is a little more expensive - so if money is really right go m-track plus with no regrets. Good luck and have fun!

    Hi! The M-Track Plus shows latency of 25.6 ms at 1020 buffer size. Please tell me the exact buffer size at which the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 shows 35 ms of latency. I would buy the Scarlett 2i4 if it had lesser latency than the M-Track Plus.

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 8 lety

    Hi, if i'm recording a Condenser mic, should i keep the little switch on Instr. or Line? tnanks

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 8 lety

      It actually doesnt matter. When a mic is connected it automatically detects it. You want instrument if its a passive input (such as an electric guitar direct) and line if its powered (like a fx pedal or keyboard). Thx for watching -david

    • @newleo90
      @newleo90 Před 8 lety

      thanks for the explanation! it makes total sense! quick question: is an electric guitar with active pick up still considered a "passive input"?

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 8 lety

      You're welcome - no, for an active pickup you'll want to use "line" mode.

    Hey! Can I connect a piano, a guitar and a mic at the same time?

    • @BasicStudioDave
      @BasicStudioDave  Před 10 lety

      Marcos Villanueva No it only has 2 mic preamps, so you could do mic and guitar or the piano (assuming it has a Left and Right output). So you could record the piano, then disconnect that and plug in the guitar and mic to record everything in 2 takes - or get a unit with at least 4 mic preamps.
