đ€ Solo Run Rules: đ€
âșI can only use the title Pokemon in battle. No switching at all, HM Pokemon are required.
âșNo use of items in battle. Potions, TMs, etc. are allowed outside of battle.
âșNo use of skips/exploits. This includes the Pokedoll Marowak skip. Badge boost is unavoidable.
âșThe TMs for Double Team and Toxic are banned. Pokemon that learn similar moves naturally are allowed to use it but not the TM.
âșI play on x3 speed and use the in-game time for the run along with resets to rank these runs.

Youngster Matt: Top Percentage Rattata
#1 ranked Rattata here.
â@@GymLeaderMatt1987if Matt is the Gym-Leader, then he could recruit YoungsterJoey to be the 'other trainer' in his gym...yknow, Brock gets "Buzz" (the 'light years' JR.Trainer), Pvt. Surge gets those guys standing around the trash cans...
...id love to see one of these games with a ROMhack or something, to make THAT 'Normal Gym' happen lol
Ha, Iâd recommend just playing Gen. 3 or above for that. Iâve been through a lot of old rom hacks learning stuff and most the hacks are slight variations that donât change too much.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 sorry, i phrased that wrong, i meant the Specific NormalGym with the leader's name being changed to "Matt", and with YoungsterJoey as the underling...thatd take some (very basic) hacky-ness...
Makes sense. Maybe one day when the channel is actually big lol. Iâm not sure many would get the reference atm.
Little known Easter Egg: Rattata looks like a rat, and if you look closely, it has "rat" in its name!
Wow.
some wild stuff in that moveset. with all of the baffling choices in gen 1, giving the first stage rat a bunch of good special coverage and body slam is hilarious.
Thatâs just how normal types are. They still are to this day really. Thereâs a lot of questionable learnsets but Rattata is not one of them.
Rattata getting Bodyslam but somehow Pidgeot and Fearow not getting it is just insane. And normal types get the weirdest coverage moves, but nothing imo will beat surfing Rhydon for me.
I will say I enjoy your Gen 1 runs the most. Like seeing where stuff stacks up in the OG world
Same.
If youâre having bad day, think of Gary Oak.
Caught powerful PokĂ©mon to his team and become the champion, only to lose to a dude with a ratâŠ
Heâs been beaten by worse lol.
Iâm amazed how well you did with rattata. I was thinking it would be either an one hit win or loss. I wonder how an alolan rattata would do. Enjoy your trip!
Iâm not sure weâll get to see the regional variant. I had to narrow those runs down and it didnât make the cut.
I agree with you on the dude being moved to mt. moon.
It's just super weird that the otherwise super freely explorable game railroads you so hard in the beginning vs. Brock, with zero TMs, very few trainers and weak pokémon.
Imo, you should even have access to the first floor of mt. moon (maybe raise Brock's levels a bit?) and have a Rocket block the ladder to continue.
A Rocket blocking stuff seems more thematic than that one random guy in the game (later on, you have way more roadblockers, but that guy imo stands out in Kanto) and this way, you'd also have access to both the water gun and mega punch TMs, which both would help and reward exploration instead of just grinding and hitting your head against a wall.
That way, imo water gun's TM also actually becomes somewhat more valuable because you can use it for longer instead of picking it up in Mt. Moon and immediately replacing it with Bubble Beam in the next gym. Ofc yes, 2/3 starters curbstomp Brock without issue at all, but still, in case you want to use some other strategy than that.
I don't totally agree with water gun access but most Pokemon that learn it do already have some sort of water move. I think at bare minimum the extra access to like 5-6 trainers and higher level grass before Mt. Moon would be a step in the right direction. I know the game isn't balanced around solo running but it would be cool if it was. I would shit my pants if Gamefreak released these games on switch with a solo mode but I have a better chance of walking outside and finding 8 million dollars in an abandoned Ferrari.
They turned our power back on, and I couldn't be happier to watch Matt đ
Nice!
Never in my life have i thought i wonder if Rattata can solo the OG pokemon games fun knowing the answer now.
Spoiler alert, they all can outside of Caterpie, Metapod, Kakuna, and Magikarp. Weedle should be counted for all intents and purposes.
Sundays are a better release day for me, algorithm-wise.
Happy to see all twenty five points of special bandaged by the normal type!
Nice. Iâve been normally releasing videos on Sunday for a while now!
That dirty rat did alright, BROTHER!
Yea it was a pretty solid run all things considered.
this shows how important speed and special are. Ratatta didnt feel that bad bc of its speed and movepool but it didnt do that well bc of its special
Itâs speed was definitely solid but I was surprised it held its own that well with a 218 base stat total. It took a solid 4 runs to get this one feeling good.
The rival being named CUK clearly stands for "Come on yoU guys this rattata is Killing me"
Rattata gave me some inspiration during the next race. đȘ
Oh boy, im on a biz trip in Paris and there are a lot of "Ratatta" here lol
brother! I might be late but bear with the timezone for now lol
Is there? Iâve never been there so I wouldnât know. I figured it would be clean haha.
â@GymLeaderMatt1987 a lot of protests plus garbage collection on strike, my man! It's like downtown San Francisco but everywhere lol
As a kid, I always thought the ears on the back sprite were the eyes
Eldritch horror edition.
Solid run for the tiny rat. A bit confusing to see Rattata Bubblebeam, Blizzard and Thunderbolt his way through some major battles but thats the power of normal type Pokemon movepools on gen 1.
The power of normal movepools in Pokémon in general. Even today in gen 9 normal types have wide movesets.
I think Rattata will do better than initial thoughts would conclude. My prediction came true!
Itâs good but also bad lol.
Rattata did pretty well for a 1st form Pokemon and a very early game one at that however the Blaine, Giovanni and Lorelei fights held it back quite a bit, but it's to be expected of a Pokemon with such low base stats. Still Rattata not too shabby way to go!
It was a little tough to route. The Blaine fight was unfortunate because I should have one shot it and the 70% chance to two shot with body slam never hitting the Lapras was annoying but a solid performance I'd say.
I once beat FireRed with just a ratatta. It was my second solo attempt after sceptile. Bruce the Ratatta crushed it lol
Nice. Itâs solid but itâs lower base stats shine through a lot.
As much as I've been enjoying the Alolan summer, videos like this are why I watch poketubers. The sleepers, the ones that are better than they have any right to be (or worse, that's fun too)! Any way, enjoy your time out of country and thanks for the content.
Got another week of work to finish and a video to wrap up along with a couple of streams and then Iâm officially breaking lol.
Yea the regular gen 1 content is my favorite too and thereâs no way to please everyone so I sprinkle in as much variety as I can.
Thats a top % Rattata if i ever saw one, yup đđ
Prob the most optimized Rattata run to exist lol.
Reckon Rattata will be a dark horse here.
It does alright but nothing special lol. A dark horse to not be utter trash maybe haha.
Rattata. Every time I get one, I never keep it or its evolution for the full game. Still, I like the little ratty. Hyper Fang is crazy good when you get it, and Rattata makes for a good glass cannon. With surprisingly good move coverage, I'm hoping it wasn't too big a chore to play it.
It was pretty solid. Better than like half the runs I've done to this point but I guess the normal progression is to dump the first few route Pokemon like Butterfree, Raticate, etc. The base stats are just lower to compete with the better mons.
Yellow is tougher for electric types generally but you probably already knew that haha
People tell me that but both Raichu and Pikachu have had easier runs in Yellow.
Brock adds more time to their runs in Red than Giovanni does in Yellow.
Before watching I think rattata is gunna be awful but you'll somehow make it work amazingly and make it look easy. Keep up the great work matt and cant wait to see how this one turns out!
I don't know about easy, but it did take an extra run. I got a pretty solid run out of it.
Great job on this one, Matt!
Youâve really gotten me curious how a Raticate would do. I tried to run some damage calculations and thought that maybe it could get by Brock before it even gets Hyper Fang in Yellow (like level 11 or 12), but I donât think it could do so in Red. đ
Still though, level 14 isnât too bad and Iâm curious which version would reign supreme.
also, funnily, Raticate does learn Ice Beam where Ratata doesnât, but they both learn Blizzard.
âŠthat feels like it should be the other way around. :3
I was going to bring up the ice beam thing too, which is weird. I also think it's weird they have the same level up learnset and Raticate doesn't start with Quick Attack or Hyper Fang. Those changes would probably make it a lot better but I do think it's an easy sub 3 hour run. It might be better than Starmie, lol. That's my new favorite pokemon to pick on because it triggers some people in streams.
Love the no mercy bgm
I would say me too but I guess thatâs obvious lol.
Ggs on the run!
Thanks!
My favorite team growing up was Rattata/Raticate and Bulbasaur, but my favorite to solo was Rattata/Raticate. Give me Hyper Fang and Bubblebeam and I'll wreck the game đ I didn't know nearly as much about PokĂ©mon then, and my main strategy for any PokĂ©mon was "level up and overpower", battle every trainer and wild PokĂ©mon I could find đ Have you ever thought about doing a "Maximum Battles Challenge"? đ
Iâve had people talk about maximum battles or whatever and itâs just not a great concept. It extends the run hours past itâs welcome and thereâs no challenge to it. It doesnât sound like something Iâd enjoy.
Great run!
It was pretty solid!
For a brief moment I thought this would be easy due to F.E.A.R. strats only to snap back to reality and realizing no hold items or abilities in gen one.
Yea, gen 1 problems lol.
Youngster Joey run!!
Top percentage.
ah, the classic challenge pokemon, and it's not that bad.
Yea! Pretty good.
Have fun on your international trip!
I got another week of work left!
As a kid I always added extra syllables to its name, thinking it was called Rattatatta.
Itâs like banana lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Give your Rattatatta a bananana bandannana.
Excellent work
Thanks!
The rat did better than i thought
Same. I didn't think it would but a good movepool, not in the slow leveling group, and having a solid speed stat can really carry a Pokemon.
Always thought Rattata was a nasty rodent, in a good way!
Itâs a little scrappy.
It's like this rattata is in the top percentage of rattatas
This comment is top percentage of the top percentage comments Iâve gotten today.
I have done some rattata solo runs (not speed or optimized like you) and I can say they didn't go great đ.
He was my favorite pokemon growing up. It would be interesting to see game freak revisit some of these 2 stage rodents from earlier generations and give them a 3rd stage just to give normal types a bit more to their niche
They got a regional variant but that's about it. I think the whole point is for them to be temporary party members then replaced. I know everyone loves the 'you killed blue's Raticate' theory but the reality is that he ditched it for better Pokemon lol.
Did a rattata run in Fire Red one time and it was ridiculously fun! He has a surprisingly wide moveset in that one.
I've had like 5 comments about the notorious FEAR strat.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 ha! Never implemented that, but it's a fun idea for sure.
If you ever do gen 3 or later runs, definitely give Rattata a go. Endeavor/Quick Attack is delightfully cursed.
The ol' fear strat.
Rattata gets great stab moves early on like quick attack and hyper fang. I predict 4:35 game time
It's significantly better than that. Anything over 4h 20m for me these days is an F tier run.
â@@GymLeaderMatt1987just finished. Man I understand this rodent. How would Raticate do
It has the same level up learnset which is weird. So the start would be similar but increased stats and the fact it gets ice beam for some reason make me think it could be solid. At least sub 3.
Tombstoner brother!!! Ratatatat
Appreciate that!
You got some dope music for the elite four i wonder what playlist you use for it or if you edit the music yourself
The rat reminds me of seviper n sceptile lol where it was just a rough run all the way through
I just use gen 1 and 2 ost for the most part. Some gen 3 and 4 songs. I manually place songs for editing.
keep up the good work man :). i do think yellow would be easier for rattata
Definitely. The easier Brock split goes a long way because you'd need to grind either way no matter what version and the extra 20-30 minutes you'd spend in the early game would just be hard to overcome.
This rodent is one of those thatâs just there.
Letâs see what it can do.
Surprisingly well!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 considering its stats Iâd agree.
Still digging the rby runs have fun out of country hope u go somewhere awesome!
Thanks! Iâll do my best.
Youngster joey would be proud
Sliced through the game!
I'm a simple girl: I see a Matt video, I hit the like button.
Appreciate that. I need all the support I can get lol.
i wonder if your opponents will FEAR him...
I'll get my coat...
I'd say they did by the end, despite the lack of held items and moves.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 itâs a genuinely reliable little furball, the move pool is very impressive.
Lol I remember ripping through PokĂ©mon blue with my ratacateđ thinking it was the greatest đ đ đ
Hated normal types as a kid. Always thought they were bad and ditched them for special Pokémon immediately. Missed out on some quality additions.
Iâm sure Raticate can really bust something good out one day.
i used a Ratticate (called Fatticate) in yellow as my normal filler till i got Snorlax, yeah i ended up keeping him, he was surprisingly good for a general play through, Ratticates 50 special is bad but its actually okay enough in gen 1, water gun and then bubble beam allowed me to deal with rock/ground types till i got my Starmie :)
Don't get me started on Starmie. It's name should have been TM hog.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 lmfao đ€Ł truer words have never been typed lol
Beating the whole game with Rattata just to prove how terrible trainers the Team Rocket grunts really are đ
Koffing and Zubat are the real tests lol.
Can only imagine how frustrating dis Pokémon is to use let alone in a normal play through.
Watch the video! It's actually pretty good! It's about a C grade, which is much higher than you'd expect with something with it's stats and no crazy boosting move like Swords Dance. I was proud of this little guy.
Tombstoner brother!!
Appreciate that!
Lets go!
You got pretty unlucky this run. Nice job with the optimizations though. Enjoy ur vacay!
I'm not sure I'd say unlucky reflecting back but rather I came really close to getting lucky and having a very low reset run.
The rats have invaded pikachus game!
Edit: wow i am first. COOL!
They've always been there to greet you on route 1, lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 lol
I did some experiments on Blue about a month ago I gave my low level Ratta Body Slam at level 3 it was a very powerful move and worked wonders
Yea, giving a Pokemon it's strongest move at the start of the game definitely makes it better!
Masterball for 200 đ° in Celadon đ
Back in the day before I knew how to make pokeballs a guaranteed catch lol. It's for consistency for HM users so runs aren't swayed one way or the other over something that has nothing to do with the Pokemon's ability.
Here to drink sodie pop, (politely) demand my shoutout and help boost engagement "just a tiny bit!" Praise Lord Helix and the Algorithm! And if all else fails, Tombstoner, brother!!!
I'm trying to get through patreons/members for a while now. You might have 3 months if I can even remember at that time lol.
Hey, Iâm a new subscriber! Is Matt the Gym Leader of Pallet Town?
For sure. I just hang out in the corner.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 đ cool. Looking forward to the livestream!
I think it would be cool to see some of the traditionally bad gen 1 PokĂ©mon but with up to date move sets and see how much that helps there times. As far as Iâm aware no one is doing that. You could do different cuts between them to see how well they are doing. Rattata would probably be a good one to do it with because all he really gets extra are some dark moves.
Paris would also be a good one since you get giga drain and x-scissor
The problem with Rattata was defense. It struggled in 3 fights. Giovanni, Lorelei, and Blaine and has super effective damage in each fight. If a 100 base power move and a 95 base power move didnât make it simple, you gotta look at those stats. Itâs combined defense, hp, and special is 80 lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 fair point with rattata but I just think itâd make for some interesting videos. Like how bad gen 1 fighting type moves suck so bad. You could do a Manley run with the gen 9 move set. I feel like like some of the coolest PokĂ©mon had the worst move sets back then.
Solid idea and sounds fun. Unfortunately Iâve done egg move runs several times in the past and the average viewer just doesnât watch it. I thought the concept of Exeggutor being able to use its special stat from the start or Psyduck not being limited to scratch for 30 levels would be an interesting comparisons but they kind of fell flat.
Nibbler! Perfect name for him
Top tier for sure.
Rattata's movepool enabled it to get a good time, surprisingly even able to beat Scyther and it gets Swords dance. Or does that make Scyther a weak final evolution, especially in Gen 1 with bad stab moves for Scyther?
I put together a good route for Scyther but swords dance doesn't mean much with no STAB moves, no body slam, no coverage, or anything of the sort. Scyther is just a below average single stage Pokemon in terms of gen 1 and the fact it's lower than a 218 base stat total route 1 rodent is all you need to know lmao.
Will perform D tier level of time
Somewhere around there.
Im becoming too slow
Just like what i think this rat will do
Nice
Noice.
#TombstonerBrother
#RatPower
Appreciate that!
I guess that I'm in the minority who actually prefers the cross-gen stuff. I suppose there is a sort of underdog/darkhorse factor to the first-form pokémon runs, but I find them to often be quite samey, frankly. Such runs typically involve just bruteforcing the game at a high level-especially if the pokémon has a bad movepool like Magicarp. The cross-gen stuff, on the other hand, feels more fresh and unique with your special coding adding to the experience.
I feel the opposite for the most part. Most cross gen runs come down to the same TMs with roughly equal times whereas a lot of these runs just scrape by with what they got with really varied times. The last yellow run was 3 hours even, this one was 3h 37 m, and recent streams have been in the 4h 19m and 5h 25m range.
Regardless of interest or preference, generic/non popular cross gen runs just donât pull a lot of views for the effort required.
Someone should make a Rom Hack game where you cannot avoid the light years trainer and he has both a Level 100 Sandslash and Level 100 Dugtrio
Sounds like youâd die a few times and be like âwhat idiot thought this was a good idea?â
Rattata is great
It was alright. Great is a stretch.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 ratigreat
Curious as to why you didnât use thunderbolt vs lapras instead of body slam since the power was higher?
Brother I literally put damage numbers on the screen for you to see to answer that question lol.
I know you do thatâs why I asked- the damage for thunderbolt was higher according to the overlay
@@mattyp724 You are confusing effective power for damage. You aren't taking into account stats, damage calculations, or anything of that nature. That's just the base power doubled because it's super effective.
See I knew I was being dumb. Thanks brother!
Why you didnât do JR trainer grinding with Machop?
It has one move. Weird place to ask that lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987got you
Raticate in crystal next
The speed is nice but I never had much luck with using rattata. Guess is at least 5 resets (hope Iâm wrong)
I had a pretty good run. 5 resets is pretty low and I can tell you that I don't hit that but a solid run nonetheless.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I always watch these. It makes me happy
I think you might be able to get sub-3:00 on Raticate. Maybe.
Yea, it will have the same start. For some reason, they have the same level up set. If it started with Hyper Fang or something we could have a special one on our hands but I'll have to just see it when I get to it.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I think access to Ice Beam is cool even though the special is trash. I wonder if it'll come in handy?
Maybe. I often forego ice beam to get blizzard later to save some time. It does have 50 special and it might allow Erika earlier but I'm a long way off from looking deep at it. I'm trying to do 2 streams, wrap up work, release a video, then leave for a bit and not think about Pokemon for a bit haha.
đ
I'd like to see rattata manage within 3 hours and
Could really see a lot of rng fights with the 90 acc
I had a good run but no way a 218 base stat total Pokémon is getting a sub 3 hour time lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I can hope though :D. Maybe the Raticate run can restore the honour of the name Rattata
I thought this one did a great job outperforming expectations. If anything, this run puts high expectations on that run.
TODAY on legendary predictions brought to you by TM 28 TOMBSTONER BROTHER
Level 74 time 3 hours 10 minutes
Bad defenses, the fact its stats wont do well vs the league and EVERYONE EXCEPT AGATHA potentially being a problem because bruno is one hi jump kick or submission away from raticide besides lance n champion yellow
Brock, erika Giovanni n especially koga are your problems before league
Great reasoning. Usually you are a little over the time but despite all those reasonings you still gave it a top 4ish pre-evolved rank in what would be a high C rank. It's a little slower than that.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I just overestimated the ability for rattata to grind quickly because I saw stab hyper fang n body slam and was like grinding easy run HARD
Rat
Pre-run: going to be rough but doable if you get through Agatha. Being able to BoltBeam (Ice and Bubble), Dig, and Body Slam is a broader moveset than most mons in Gen1.
Fast Pokemon with Dig? Sounds like an easy Agatha battle to me!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I realized that after I posted it, but I did not know if it would be able to do that at a low(ish) level without Badge Boosting.
Easily. Yellow Agatha feels easier to me and they have average defense.
â@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Post-Run commentary: better than I expected. Somehow I noted the value of the movepool but overlooked how a solid Speed stat and Dig solves the Agatha problem. That's what I get for being too excited to post.
Regardless, nice run out of Joey's Ace. Raticate should be legitimately solid if you ever run it, for all the reasons you stated (basically Rattata but better).
Well Done!
Gotta play them all eventually!
Glm!!!
Is this even possible
Easily, lol. There's only a few impossible runs because of only normal damage.
rule34 Exeggcute run when?
I donât know what that is.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 neither do I, but I know how much you love doing runs with that pokemon ^_^
I don't understand. You repeat multiple times that the stats are too low, and the damage ranges are too bad, making most of your fights a struggle. But you're just one-shotting everything as you speak. Why doesn't your script match up with the gameplay footage?
Those one shots take grinding and extra levels. The stats are free to look at, if you think 218 base stat total isnât low then I donât know what to tell you.
Even early I need to be 28 for Misty but being specific always helps. Damage isnât Rattataâs problem, itâs defensive stats is what makes it difficult. I praise itâs attack early with Hyper Fang and it just gets better with dig and body slam!
