Just a quick correction provided by my japanese audience: the backlash against Kei wasn’t merely due to his being a commoner, but it was to do with his mother’s financial issues and fears that he may have been a male Meghan Markle (an opportunist). This latter point in particular was not at all evident in the english publications I relied on (info in English about this topic was unfortunately very limited and repetitive).
I did know the part about Kei’s mother owing money (and it was included visually); I just didn’t think it was offensive enough to justify the backlash so I didn’t focus on that point because IMO, his mother’s issues weren’t relevant to his character.
Regardless, the point was that Princess Mako gave up everything to be with Kei. I hope he never loses sight of that and cherishes her.
To all my Japanese viewers who added context: arigatou gozaimasu!

The money was owed by his mother, not him. I think he was treated very unfairly. However, I saw photos of them recently and they look besotted with each other. I’m also happy that it’s been reported that he has passed the bar. I hope they live happily ever after and photographers leave them alone because they do not court the spotlight.

@@norajjones3792that’s why I didn’t focus on that detail; his mother’s issues shouldn’t be his own. However, I do wonder whether culture determines how the issue is viewed. My impression is that they are very much in love as well. I wish them all the best!

@@norajjones3792 , you are right, and the same would have happened with the Harkles as well, if they had really wanted to. The Japanese couple lives simply in a one bedroom apartment, go about their business, I doubt they even have security, and the press therefore took a couple of pictures once or twice of them running errands. Then they got bored and left them alone.

Grace Kelly experienced intense depression, after giving up her career, her country, her friends. She figured out how to find new ways to feel happy through different kinds of art. I don't think any were as satisfying as acting, but she made stunningly lovely pressed flower art, did poetry readings. Meghan thinks she should be praised for marrying Harry. In a lot of ways Harry is the one who has the most in common with the young princess. Meghan gave up nothing. It is documented that she retained her lawyers, managers & agents. She still had sunshine sachs. She even kept her clothing and furniture in storage in Canada. She had no intention on staying in the Royal family and she kept her Hollywood life on hold until she could warp Harry enough to leave with her. I'm sure she didn't know how long that was going to take wasn't going to be a month, 6 months, a year, but she had everything on standby for when she got back to Hollywood.
Harry is the one who gave up everything. His family, friends, culture, country, lifestyle. Everything he knew and loved especially his military appointments & charities and the protection from the palace for his acts of indiscretions.
But yet Meghan has him convinced that she's the one who gave up everything to be with him and he and his family in some way because of her sacrifice. She really is a piece of work!😂😂

Hello from Japan! Pluto, thank you for taking up this subject. Although I do want to point out, that it is traditional for Japanse princesses to leave the royal family after marriage, and most princesses in recent years are marrying commoners. In Princess Mako's case, the people of Japan were not against her marriage with Kei because he was a commoner, but because they were worried that their beloved princess was being deceived by what seemed to be the male version of Meghan Markle - approaching Mako for status, and money to some extent. Pluto, please dive into the details! The imperial prince, Mako's father, finally consented to their marriage, after Kei's announcement that he will be studying to become a lawyer in NY (was a paralegal in Japan), and that he had finally solved the monetary problems he had with his mother's ex-fiancee. After their marriage Kei has worked hard to become a laywer in NY and has proven to the Japanese people, so far, that he has married for love.

Thank you for sharing your insights as I have heard of this previously and I tried to look into it, but the language barrier hasn’t provided me the proof that Kei was looking for a new status. If anything he has proven that he just wanted to marry the Princess not for her status but for Mako.
Living in the US they have barely made a peep, just mentioning Kei got into a law firm and that was it. This couple never threw themselves in the press, invite themselves to galas or charities to mix in with the socialite crowds, or cried about how unfair their families were. This couple has been graceful and dignified and I think it’s easier for Americans to accept them because our culture has a focus on the individuality and understand that every family has a case were there is that someone who stirs up trouble and we can separate the individual from the collective of the family. The way how I see it, Kei was just in an unfortunate situation that those who were supposed to represent the best of the family failed and it sadly reflected badly in a culture that devalues the family ideals.
To me it just seems like comparing apples to oranges about the sacrifices this couple made in comparison to the Harkles were you have multiple people witnessing and verifying Markle was after a “British upper class man” before she happened to have landed herself with one of the world’s most famous princes in one of the most known royal families. Not saying the Hapanese royal family isn’t well known, but Markle really tried to play it dumb thinking she could get away telling the world she was oblivious to the British royal family because she was an American, even though she was a cable tv actress who lived in Canada where their currency had the late Queen Elizabeth’s face on it. I could go on, but to simplify it, there were MANY red flags with the Harkle’s match compared to Princess Mako and Kei who have seemed like a solid couple.

I really like Princess Mako and so far I do believe that he married her for love. I also do believe, that both, Kei and Mako are victims of complicated relationship between his mother and her former fiancé. In the west people have difficulties to understand the importance of the family background, especially debt. There were many princesses marrying out (the only way they can get marry, because there is no aristocratic man for them), and people were happy for them,.
Mako gave up the generous gift in money Princesses usually receive when married. They now live of his salary and maybe she has a private money. But I've seen people on internet angry still.

She went on to study art history at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland before receiving her master's in art museum and gallery studies from the University of Leicester in England. No moaning or complaining, just acceptance and adherence even when the imperial family and the public judged her so harshly. Compare and contrast with European royals like Queen Letizia of Spain, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and Prince Daniel husband of Crown Princess Victoria. All of them are professionals who gave up their jobs, did the work and grew in stature because of it.
Amongst them we have a journalist, a banker, a marketing consultant and a small business owner. So a personal trainer is not on paper a great prospect, but he built his own business and clearly had a beneficial and empowering impact on Victoria given her well documented battle with bulemia and I respect that. Maxima and Mary had to learn new languages and change religions and nationalities for their husbands. There's an amusement moment which Mary is in her native Australia, giving a speech in English and slips accidentally into Danish which is her everyday language now. Her surprised reaction to her mistake, which was only a few words before she caught herself, was adorkable - that's how well she's adapted. Maxima's parents couldn't go to her wedding because of her father's involvement in the Argentine Junta in the 1970s, that must have been stressful as hell as well. Nevermind that Letizia and Felipe are trying to save the Spanish monarchy from the mess her father-in-law left them to deal with.
My point is that these are serious people who fully committed to their duties and are liked and respected for that. Even Chris O'Neill who married Carl XVI Gustaf's younger daughter Princess Madeleine and opted out did so because it wasn't playing to his strengths was straightforward and honest about his intentions. He comes to Sweden and appears at events when he needs to or is asked to, he keeps a low profile focusing on his professional life and his family primarily and respects the institution he married into. In that sense he's no different from say Sir Tim Lawrence, aka Mr Princess Anne but in banking not in the military. And he may well prove useful to them yet, having a banker in the family is always useful....
The difference between these people and Meghan is startling. She has the basic skills to be successful, communication and media training, the ability to learn a brief/script quickly, a reasonable education, drive when it suits her, on paper it should have worked. Ultimately Letizia, Maxima, Mary, Daniel and even Chris have something that Meghan doesn't have, character. Oh if only Harry could have picked someone happy to be the female Chris O'Neill, that would have been just fine....

I would like to point out some things. Princesses can still keep their royal titles if they married high ranking royal nobles .
Kei on the other hand actually has some issues that the people thought made him not worthy of their princess. Kei’s mother was involved with money issues (borrowed money from a man and refused to pay it back) that has now been resolved , Kei failed his exams for lawyer registration twice before passing the exams by the skin of his teeth. That said, he is young, didn’t take any money from the royal family. I respect him for that.
I like the couple. Tthe fact that she chose to give up her princess status and turned down billions of yen that princesses were entitled to upon leaving their royal household, you can see she does not care much of material matters. Noble in birth and character.

Unlike the two unmentionable grifters with their constant fake paps and NY car chase. M definitely did not marry for love. She loves the status and the money that come with it. Harry is only an after-thought, an annoyance that she needs to put up with for a time being until proper time for her to dispose him like the way she disposed her first (or second?) husband.

And when her engagement was announced, I was so happy for her - then the abuse they endured, postponement, and eventually her marriage took place (amid on-going abuse from the public) . I’m happy for Mako and her husband, and am truly happy that they chose to leave Japan.

Members of the Japanese royal family are very admirable, even royalty from other nations could learn from them. They're all academically gifted and well achieved in their own rights - an example that being duty-bound does not mean you cannot be aspirational or passionate in pursuit of personal endeavours. They're also incredibly dignified, humble and gracious - you'll never hear even a peep of complaint from them. Those other two are not even playing in the same league and comparing them to the Japanese royal family would be an insult.

Princess Mako's story gets me every time! As for Kei, there was a kerfuffle about where the money for his law school came from. It was a mess involving his mother and his mother's boyfriend (husband?). However, by the princess not taking the money when she left, that should have put to rest all the gossip about Kei's intentions. They seem to be living a quiet life in NYC and have had very few instances of being caught on camera while living their lives. I wish them a long and happy life together. ❤

Hi Pluto, I always like your presentations but for princess Mako’s story let me explain a little bit more.
People were not against K because he’s a commoner but because his mother was a manipulator and a con. People were afraid that Princess Mako would be manipulated and end up like K’s father and his grandparents (from the father’s side). K’s father was so depressed and killed himself when married to K’s mother. The grandparents also killed themselves after many disputes with her. K was raised by a manipulated mother.
It was an on going case between K’s mother (and K) vs her ex boyfriend at the time. It was about money.
Japanese people expected K to solve the case before marrying princess Mako and he didn’t. That’s a red flag. So people concern about princess Mako’s future. Not because K is a commoner. People love Princess Mako.
Princess Mako’s aunt (the emperor’s daughter at the time) married a commoner also. The husband is a good person and people accepted him.
Japanese people aware that Princess Mako purely loves K but not sure about K. Time will tell. I hope he really loves her and protect her.
I apologize for my English. I hope you understand what I am trying to say🙏🏻
    Thank you

It seems since the early 1900’s, it required a spouse to make the sacrifices when joining into a royal family. Ironically as you were mentioning that the Emperor was chasing his wife to convince to marry him, thought back to George VI, aka Bertie, and Elizabeth. Apparently Bertie asked Elizabeth 3 times to marry him, she initially rejected because she knew the constraints it would have on her life but eventually she gave in. And we’re talking about the man who had a stammer, yet he knew she was the one and he was right. The tragedy is they both had hoped to have that peaceful life on the sides but that illusion never came to fruition because of Bertie’s brothers “sacrifice” for love. And with the high expectations for a man I’ll prepared to take the thrown of an Empire, it was still considered an Empire at the time, along with the tense years of WWII it took Bertie’s health that in the end Elizabeth made a sacrifice for the short years with her beloved.
Duty is never to be confused with pleasure. Seems like no matter what year or century it is, there’s always someone who never learns.
With that, it does give me a little pride as an American that this young couple have started their lives here in my home country, likely to try to distance themselves from the harsh expectations they have to go through. From what I have heard they seem like a genuine lovely couple with their heads on their shoulders, they have beautiful morals of not expecting the world to pander to them but are willing to find a way to make the best of their circumstances. That is a royal couple I believe many Americans are happy to support even though we are not a country that tends to see eye to eye with royalty, however we do respect it but we mainly focus on the character. Princess Mako and Kei seems to be a couple who know commitment and that is something that should be admired and respected.

I have to wonder if the genders were reversed and it was a prince who was giving up everything for the woman he loved if he would be revered as a hero and a modernizer ( if the rules dictated he had to give everything up). And of course we all know Nutmeg would NEVERlet Harry walk away from HIS family completely empty- handed to save his pride!!

    Good morning Pluto,
Thank you for another wonderful video.
What a beautiful story & a beautiful young couple who know & feel what love is, what love means. Their love will conquer all as real love is so powerful in itself.
As for that other embarrassing pair of grifters, i believe a war is brewing & no doubt it will play out in public. I believe H now realises he was conned, well & truly stitched up & he knows it. I believe if they do stay together he will retreat day by day into a shadow of the man he once was. His biggest problem is all trust has now gone, nobody trusts him at all & at a time when he needs people more than he has ever needed them, knocked doors will remain closed, ringing phones will not be answered. The woman he thought he had married does not exist & nobody at all wants anything to do with the one that does exist, the imposter, & they never will.
His only hope is to publicly issue a sincere & heartfelt apology to all those he wronged in the hope that people will forgive him. I think a very lonely long walk is ahead. The public will never ever forget the hurt he caused his Grandparents at a time they needed love & support, he kicked them while they were down in front of the world.
I for one am still hurting for our wonderful Queen Elizabeth II. I personally can never forgive M for what she has done & as a Christian that is a challenge i am going to have to work on.
I hope you are having a fab time in Japan Pluto. Best wishes Annie💐

The Office of the Allied Supreme Commander in the aftermath of the Surrender of Japan has a lot to answer for. They (Americans ironically) were responsible for the text of the Imperial Household Law and then Emperor Hirohito in his delicate political position trying to hold on to his throne for himself and his family and cleanse his reputation after the war went along with it.
The Imperial Household Law can be modified, it was to allow the Emperor Emiritus to abdicate in 2019 but I think that was the first time. Worse is the fact that the Emperor has one child, a daughter, Princess Aiko, a capable young lady destined to be faced with the same choice as Mako one day when in every other non-Muslim society she would be Crown Princess right now. Tellingly the prospects of reform to allow female succession basically vanished the minute the then Crown Prince's brother had a son (ironically Mako's little brother Prince Hisahito) and underscores that Japan for all it's startling modernity, in some ways is still incredibly traditional in others, to the point of being anachronistic and harmful.
The way the system is set up is that if Hisahito only had daughters, they would be passed over and a cadet branch of cousins with sons would get the throne, though you are going back to a line of the Meiji to find them. Telling that isn't it? These are all well educated, able people who are capable of doing great things and being great Empresses if given the chance. The sister of the Emperor is a married but senior Shinto priestess as an example. But the Japanese understanding of feminism just doesn't include being Empress Regnant and they seem cool with that despite the excellent examples we have seen of queenship with Elizabeth II and Margrethe II in Denmark recently.
That's their decision, and it risks the future of the monarchy and the glue it provides in the society, but it's not for us to tell them their norms are stupid, even when we think they are (and this is NUTS). That's the difference between La Markle and normal people, she would demand an explanation for something she disapproves of (and yeah, this is one of the rate occasions I would agree) and lecture them on how awful a system is that Americans not Japanese actually wrote whilst being ignorant enough not to know that just to score points and feel important about a practice that is so deeply embedded in Japanese society now that it's probably going to take something radical and potentially very serious to change it.

      Thank you.
I am not expert on Japan, but I am trained as an Archivist, so I have a historian's background and I have worked for a British Peer, so a knowledge of how these systems work helped. I first became aware of the Japanese way of doing things when Mako's aunt the ex-Princess Sayako married, the one who is now a priestess and has been an Orinithologist. She married an urban designer with the Tokyo government. I believe it was the first time a member of the Imperial married a non-aristocrat, so naturally the BBC covered it as a secondary item in one of their news bulletins which got my attention. They gave a brief overview of the Imperial Household Law as part of the item which was quite useful.
I dread to think what it will take for Japan to repeal the law and bring in something sensible, they must realise that the choice between marriage to the first promising candidate who comes along or a fate as the Japanese version of a Vestal Virgin probably isn't sustainable. Sayako gets her cake and eat it, what about another princess later on who marries the wrong guy to avoid a future as a chaste priestess? Yikes! Worse, I think Prince Hisahito is the last male in the line, the pressure is really on him to have two or three sons and then them all to have at least one son to secure the succession which isn't fair on them either.
At the very least they seem to have strangely avoided the conversation they need to have about their Princesses. You would have thought that the ex-Princess Mako situation might have generated a backlash and encouraged a public debate on reforming without fully repealing the IHL. One option is to do a variation of what the Swedes and Danes do with their ex-Royals when they marry people without Parliamentary consent, the Swedish Counts of Wisborg and Danish Counts of Rosenborg. Give them an actual choice about their professional futures and a bit of status for themselves and their kids to acknowledge that they descend from the Imperial House. It's not that complicated, Japan has a peerage system. You don't need to give anything to the husband, just to the ex-Princess and her children as a standard for any ex-Princess along with her dowry along with the right to pursue any career she likes, whether she marries or not - which should be the first item on the list. Something like (forgive my terrible Japanese) 'Hakshaka Kyūden no' which is roughly, 'Countess of the Palace' which acknowledges status and ancestry at the same time. It would be a fairly minor change in the grand scheme of things which is beneficial to the females in the family and does not change the Salic law succession if having a male as Head of State is that important to them.
I just imagine the British Monarchy without Princess Anne, we will never know if there was a Princess Anne amongst these princesses or at the very least someone steady and dependable who will just go out and do the charity work, sit on boards and be an asset quite happily, there may have been. With all that education, you can't tell me that Mako wouldn't have been useful to the Imperial Household and the Japanese state with their art and antique collections? She's a curator to trade for Christ's sakes. And having a lawyer in the family is always useful.... Mako's basically like a more mature version of Princess Eugenie, same kind of education and upbringing but with more sensible parents. The Dutch and Belgians would have been disadvantaged too given Princess Astrid and some of Beatrix's younger sisters (there were 4 girls in that generation). Barring queue-jumping for the COVID vaccine, King Felipe of Spain's elder sister Elena hasn't done anything I am aware of, unlike his other sister Cristina.... Hell even Jordan has done better, one of Abdullah II's sisters is a Major General and a qualified paratrooper in the Jordanian Army, his sisters and wife proved useful during the Arab Spring helping to resolve the protests with a positive outcome.
Leaving aside issues of human decency, it's just such a waste of talent and that's the strangest part of all in a country so focused on excellence and success now-a-days and they could take some pressure off the Empress who has a history of mental health difficulties. Pity....

The Japanese royal family was greatly reduced after World War 2, the current problem they are having is that there are not enough young royal men for the Princesses to marry. Unless rules change, which is anathema in Japan, the royal family is close to dying out. The solution would be to restore some of the families who were cut out decades ago, (that are still extant) or allow commoners to marry Princesses and become royal, much as Princess Catherine was able to in the UK.

With the struggle the Japanese people are currently struggling with , with hikikomori being such a trend, it's sad that the sweet couple were not more supported. I understand the power of tradition, and accept that every country is different. But it really does contrast with Meghan's portrayal of how she was treated (i.e. with great happiness and welcome until *SHE* started acting a certain way. )

Hi Pluto - I’m half Japanese. I have lived and worked in both Japan and the UK. I normally love your content but I think in this one you may have been misinformed. The mainstream media in Japan won’t tell you the truth about what’s going on. If you speak to the average Japanese person, you will get a very different story. There are too many points to even go though in one message, and many Japanese You-tubers on here have put it a lot more eloquently than I can, (one, an ex reporter, in particular keeps getting his channel shut down) but if the Japanese public are angry about something, best believe there is a reason for it. For starters the Akishinomiya (Mako’s) side of the family, have always been considered grifters. Japanese people didn’t care about Komuro being a ‘commoner’. The problem started when Kei Komuro’s mother was found out for financial fraud, as well as being a possible suspect in her husband and his parent’s mysterious deaths. She also had huge debt and owes a lot of money to many people. The public were understandably concerned this would be paid off with their taxes. They were rightfully concerned that Komuro might only be after Mako’s money and status, and protection for his mother. Anger also increased when a huge amount of tax payers money went to his personal protection and for his mother while he was studying, when times were tough post pandemic and the average Japanese person didn’t even know if they’d be able to get their retirement money. Mako has always wanted out of the Royal Family, ever since she was young (can’t say I blame her) and has often been accused of acting like the public are ‘beneath’ her. Her complaining that the tabloids and the general public gave her PTSD was, in many Japanese people’s eyes, like Meaghan’s ‘no one asked me if I was okay’ moment. I’m not for one second denying she went though these issues, and I feel bad for her, but she was - much like Harry - ignoring obvious red flags and refusing to listen to advice from those around her, and complaining about the tabloids as a member of the Royal family was unheard of at this point and was extremely ill-timed given that a percentage of the population was struggling to put food on the table post pandemic.
Mako refused the big wedding and the 1million wedding gift yes, because everyone was sick of them by this point.
So no, it’s not because Japanese people are ‘closed-minded’ and ‘didn’t like him because he’s a commoner’ it’s because of the issues surrounding who he really is and their ungracious attitude towards the general public. If they are genuinely happy now then I’m very glad (they seem to be living quietly and atleast they haven’t done a Harry and Meghan and gone on a word wide privacy tour) but I hope you can see a different perspective on why many people in Japan opposed this.
Edit: Someone else in the comments section explained this very well but there were many more red flags surrounding Komuro which explains why the Japanese were concerned for Mako getting involved with him. Also, they still both live in privilege as they have an entourage and protection, it’s not as if they are out there fending for themselves.

Yes, this! I heard about the Komuro scandals but I didn’t know Mako’s side of the family was also scrutinized. I personally think the current emperor and empress focus on duty and serving their people. They only have one daughter, but the Akishinomiya side had a third child much later, a son. It made me think they were hoping for a crown prince so they can gain power.

Wow indeed! How fascinating, thank you for your comment! I need to take some time and read through the comments. I always see great convos in the comments sections and I think it's because Pluto encourages discussion which is so wonderful! 🌻 I believe MM would definitely have ran for the hills if they told her and Harold she couldn't marry into the family but they could marry and move OUT of the family haha. 😂
